Graveland - The name has always for me encapsulated the sound of the project. It has an ancient as well as obviously earthen quality to it, while maintaining a dark aura.

Atlantean Kodex - Again, the band name mirrors the sound of the project. It's regal, obscure, and brings to mind secret societies and solemn rites.

Heavy Load - (insert Beavis and Butthead laughter here)

VoiVod - It certainly sounds alien-esque and otherworldly, but also has somewhat of a playfulness to it that speaks to my sc-fi nerdism.

Unaussprechlichen Kulten - It's a mouthful and certainly difficult to pronounce, but if it doesn't scream lovecraftian horror, then I don't know what does.

Nebular Moon always sounds for me very atmospheric.
Immortal and Nightfall gives you right sense even before you push "play".
Midvinter, Blood Storm and Nokturnal Mortum are great examples of good sounding band names.

Devouring Star is brilliant. It gives a pretty accurate image of the music as well.

I also really like Immolation.

I love the name of Drudkh, it means "tree" in the Sanskrit language.

My other favourite band names are A Forest of Stars, Opeth, Dekadent, Anaal Nathrakh.

Fuck there are SO MANY. But I agree with the OP and many others, Dream Theater is a name that made me want to check out the band as soon as I heard the name back in 2000, and even though I've cooled on their music since 2003, it's still one of my favourite band names of any genre.

As cheesy as it may have become over time, I remember being super interested in Cradle Of Filth upon hearing their name.

Other favs are
Nocturnal Rites
Opeth
Judas Priest
Sentenced
Morbid Angel

Deathspell Omega sounds so cool to me for some reason.

Some of my favorites:

Bolt Thrower - I first checked this band just for the name alone. What the hell is a bolt thrower I really don't want to know.
Acid Bath - Music sounds exactly like this.
Blind Guardian - What does it MEAN?
Tiamat - Is there anything doper than the mythological goddess dragon that shat the universe?
Anaal Nathrakh - lol.
Twilightning - So ridiculously bad and cheesy but weirdly original and rolls off the tongue just nice.

A Boltgun, or Bolter, is a weapon from Warhammer 40k. It fires a self-propelled 'bolt' which penetrates the target and then detonates inside them, blowing them apart. Like a fully automatic RPG. Bolt Thrower love their Warhammer 40k (for good reason).

I've always liked Cult Of Luna.

Emperor is another great name, simple, yet captivating. Its a fairly innocent word, but in the context of the bands image and music, it has a menacing tone.

And it allowed for one of the most iconic and coolest looking logos.

I like a lot of my favorite bands' names like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Venom, Bathory, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary, Darkthrone, Emperor, etc. The classic stuff, one or two words. Celtic Frost is probably one of the best two word names ever. Helloween was interesting and different. Metal Church too.

Of the newer bands I really like Spectal Voice. When I read it I thought it sounded pretty cool. Cool band too.

I also like the occasional more absurd name like Witch Vomit and stuff like that.

A fun game I play on MA is to band search a dirty word like "anal" or "cunt" and read all the band names that come up (like Anal Cunt of course!). I laugh my ass off. There's some great ones.

I've never seen a Bolter referred-to as a Bolt Thrower though, so if that's true maybe the band coined it.

I always just assumed it referred to a ballista; the bolt throwing siege engine.

[ed] I'll add another. The Mars Volta.

from the band's description here on the acrhives:

Quote:
The band took its name from a weapon in the popular tabletop strategy game Warhammer Fantasy Battles. The lyrics and artwork of their second and third albums were based on Warhammer Fantasy Battles, as well as its futuristic companion Warhammer 40,000 with much of the art actually being provided by the game's publisher, Games Workshop.

I agree with OP Dream Theater is a great name.

It's been mentioned a couple times but Swallow the Sun is another favorite; definitely provokes a somber feeling.

Wolves in the Throne Room - just sounds so cool

Lots of cool picks in this thread, as well as some extremely questionable ones. That's what I get for asking for 'favorite band names' and not 'best band names', I guess.

I'll mention some extremely obvious great names now: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Metal Church. I don't think these require any explanation.

I really want to say Fates Warning, but the lack of an apostrophe bothers me too much. What exactly were they trying to say? Fate's warning? Fates' warning? Or is it really supposed to be 'fates warning', as in, 'the fates warning you not to do something'? My guess is that they thought an apostrophe would look obnoxious in the logo, and I'd have to agree, but still, the grammarian in me protests.

Psychotic Waltz is a cool name, and perfectly fits the music of 'A Social Grace', if not so much the subsequent albums. That makes sense, considering the name came after the music, not before, at least in the case of one particular song.

I really like the name Anathema, too. It's just a cool word, and I like saying it. It no longer suits them since they became the most joyful band on the face of the earth, but whatever.

As mentioned before, this is actually incorrect. It's an artillery piece from Warhammer Fantasy used by a couple of factions. It's essentially a ballista like weapon.

Here's one manned by Dwarves. No self-respecting, half-decent Dwarf player actually used one though because their cannons were straight better. :P

I always thought it was more like a lightning bolt thrower. Like zeus but in machinery form, still cool though.

No band name better communicates exactly what kind of experience you're in for than SADISTIK EXEKUTION. Ignorant, brutal and weird.

Runemagick is another great and slightly over-the-top one. Instantly made me want to listen to their music and I think it complements their stoned, mystical death-doom perfectly.

Not my favourite, but I remember once this girl (who wasn't into metal) was looking at my CD collection and she was particularly taken with the name "Carnal Forge".

Simpler is definitely better. Of course stuff like Black Sabbath, Venom, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Possessed. Bolt Thrower, Runemagick. Incantation!

Some I really like that haven't been mentioned: Moonsorrow, Candlemass, Absu, Aeternus. Also some other really simple newer ones that are great like Midnight and Visigoth.

I don't normally care for bands with really crass or funny names, but I'll be damned if it isn't fun to say "Shitfucker."

I feel like the best band names are the ones that sound cool when you say them out loud on stage. No idea how that logic applies to studio-only projects though.

Wino is one of the first guys that comes to mind when thinking of cool band names. I know he didn't come up with Saint Vitus or Shrinebuilder, but those along with The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and The Hidden Hand among others are pretty interesting names. Similar could be said for Tom G Warrior as Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Apollyon Sun, and Triptykon are all incredible names.

Kind of. It would be a brilliant name for some kind of dissonant, dissociative stuff with imagery of post-apocalyptic famine and existential despair in a devastated world.

Acid Witch definitely chose the right moniker. Type O Negative as well. On a less serious note, always enjoyed the names Bathtub Shitter and Queef Huffer.
