Sounds like a compilation of a lot of elements from previous albums while still sounding fresh at the same time, very promising.

The first minute and a half are the highlight for me. I also like the improved production (somewhat like ordure) and the vocals, which seem to be cleaner in a way, but no less aggressive.

The lyrics are great too, from what I deduce from my limited grasp of french and online translation.

"Pervitine and weapons of war!
Molotov cocktails!
More violent than the Stone Age
And ugly like the Bogdanovs.
We did not read Heidegger
Counting we don't know
But we're throwing the hatchet
Like Virgilius Alekna"

Apparently the second track marks "a big stylistic change in Peste Noire", resulting in Militant Zone labelling it the most provocative album since “L'Ordure à l'état Pur”. My money is on Famine's rap influences coming to the fore in a big way.

I wouldn't be surprised. The last music video I saw looked like a hip hop video.

That track wasn't too bad. Nothing spectacular but I enjoyed it. Let's see how the next single shapes up....

I do not understand famine. He sometimes act like a white supremacist but others he's completely the opposite, I guess he's the biggest troll in metal and everyone fails to notice?

The track was pretty good. I think Peste Noire has been... less than good for quite some time, but this was a solid track!

I remember Famine saying in an interview that he loved everything in arts that was subversive, evil, disturbing, disgusting and made people uncomfortable. Even stuff that was against his own personnal values. I don't know how much of this is true, but he said he liked to listen to black supremacist hip-hop at some point.

So yeah, it's hard to know for sure what this guy is about...

Complete (but unofficial) translation of the lyrics to "Aux Armes", (partially) courtesy of "Username_Paul" on reddit.

Pervitin and weapons of war! (Pervitin was the name of an amphetamine drug used by the Wehrmacht during WW2)
Molotov Cocktails!
More violent than the Stone Age...
And ugly like the Bogdanovs!
We did not read Heidegger!*
Counting we don't know (the wording in french in wrong too, probably to emphasize the lack of intelligence)
But we're throwing the hatchet
Like Virgilius Alekna

Go! Go! Go!

Out of my way fat bitch before we dismantle you (heavy use of slang, notably verlan, a kind of slang popularised by rap/hip hop french artists)

Dark and magical
Is the aura of dangerous days to come.
Blissful is my clique
To the melody of sirens
When it smells like the street, urine and fear
And that cold and serene
On the sly away from the cops
Like dogs on a bitch
In the depths of a square it stabs you.

RED, red as scarlet blood, is the fury of our soldiers!
WHITE, white as our people, pure and royal are our hearts!
BLACK, black as manure, the earth that will drink your pains
And the tears, and the spasms, and the juice from your bodies.
Brother! Don't stay behind, go to the frontlines and prove your worth,
May eternal France remember your hour!

If I advance,
Even in the mud and darkness,
Follow me,
Take part in the fight!
If I retreat, kill me.
If I advance,
Even in the mud and darkness,
Follow me,
Take part in the fight!
If I die, avenge me

(Based on words from Henri de la Rochejaquelein, the youngest general of the Royalist Vendéan insurrection during the French Revolution)

To the melody of sirens

At 6:00, an excerpt from a speech by Jacques Doriot -
"I say again to you, the time is solemn, I call upon you to take arms!
To arms! To give back to France its right to European life!
To arms! To build the World of tomorrow, which could never cope without France!"

My car as a base
Your silhouette as a goal
Your death for the horizon.

(A play on an aphorism by Dominique Venner*, an important meta-political figure in the French far-right, who said "Nature as our basis, excellence as our goal, beauty as our horizon")

* Alternative samizdat links, probably NSFW in the eyes of your employer or your mother, for a better contextual understanding: Heidegger / Venner

Quote:
With “Aux armes” you’ve had a taste of Black Metal. For December, we are cooking up a Cabaret experience. And on today’s menu we got some wicked hardcore Rap. “Fuligine faciem obducti,” said Vossius: Harlequin with many faces, descended from Herlequin the devil, had “his face blackened with smoke.” For this track, the Black Plague is going Black for real.

Definitely going to need a while to digest that haha. A complete translation of the lyrics probably even more necessary than usual for a full appreciation.

A couple of snippets:

Big up Nero, Tepes, Rais, Sade and the others!
We came to resurrect the Berserkers, the Argonauts,
The other age and the outrage, the ancient age and the rage
Big as Babar, with a blond beard, a long bar
Our barbarian inheritance

MC Famine, DJ genocide
For the Seventh Negro Plague
More aggressive than a crow bar
and more sour
that the dirtiest
Pesticides.

from other thread.

a white nationalist taking an already established style popularized by black Americans, to further some "purity" message is so gloriously indicative of what white nationalism is and the astonishing lack of self-awareness nationalists have.

that being said, it's awesome to see another band copy Liturgy, it's a shame it'll be a fraction of the genius!

Whatever it is that you find "genius" about Liturgy is beyond me. I understand that people have different tastes but "genius" is such a strong word that I find it incredible that someone would use it in regards to anything that Hendrix composed. He's neither the Stephen Hawking (example of a real genius; not musician) nor the Chuck Schuldiner (example of a real genius; musician) of experimental black metal.

Defining "real genius" in quantifiable terms is like defining stupidity in quantifiable terms; it is impossible, we just know it exists. However, I'd say a "real genius" is a person whose work is deemed important, innovative and impressive by people who share the same area of expertise, and is regarded as such by the general public. And before anyone feels like pointing it out - yes, this is my opinion. Feel free to believe that Liturgy represents the work of a genius if that's what you want; I was simply taken aback by the term and to whom it was attributed.

That "Vitriol" song... you're telling me this band is on the Metal Archives? Sheesh, I mean, it wasn't horrible, it had the potential to be an interesting rap/hip hop song (though it certainly wasn't very good either.) But I'm guessing they must have started out playing metal at some point?

The Peste Noire song was sort of... I dunno, a bit overly theatrical, kind of like Black Metal meets Spinal Tap or something. It was okay, I can see what they were going for at least, but it doesn't quite rock my boat.

well, i noticed being 34 i've outgrown a lot of the rap i ever used to listen to growing up (early 90s gangsta rap, first couple outkast albums, etc), i imagine a lot of the younger fans will probably like it since they don't seem to be as grumpy about rap nowadays.

I guess a lot of the people who didn't like this song never listened to "L'ordure à l'état pur". Famine had rap influences in that album as well. This is nothing new for Famine. I actually enjoyed the song. Not as much as the first one, but I'd be fine if the new album had a few songs in this style.

God forbid for Famine trying to evolve his sound and not make the same album over and over...

Can we get more opinions by people who are actual fans of hip hop? Obviously someone who only listens to metal will think it's dog shit.

Speaking of which: I've actually been exploring a lot of rap and hip hop lately and I can say from my ignorance and limited experience that this isn't completely terrible. I like the filthy vocals, but he could've found a more competent person to compose more engaging beats for him.

Same here bud. My stuff was mainly Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and Eric B. & Rakim. Those new rap beats are godawful and the mixture between black metal and this crap really isn't for me.

i like hip hop. when i was getting into heavy metal, i was exploring the 90s new york scene as well. i performed a big daddy kane joint at a talent show in high school ("ain't no half-steppin"). lil b genuinely became my foundation as a young adult. nowadays i'm pretty into the griselda records camp, along with some tde (dot and rock, mostly) and shit like pusha.

this song is fucking terrible on every goddamn level. the presumption that people don't like this because they can't appreciate hip hop is offensive and does absolutely nothing for the culture. the beat is ass. famine's half-assed growl flow is ass. this song fucking blows. and that's completely ignoring any and all nazi rap irony. just on a pure sonic level it's degrading.

Death is genius now? God above! Clearly you haven't truly listened to The Ark Work or you wouldn't be saying such foolish things. It's arguably one of the more important metal/extreme music records of the 10s and a massive testament to songwriting and instrumentation. Meanwhile, Peste Noire made a few interesting albums and sullied their career with nazi rap.

I'd probably like The Ark Work if Hendrix didn't do the vocals. They give me the same negative visceral reaction as hearing nails on chalkboard. Just the way he says Vitrioooooooool at 1:37 for example. Ugh.

That Peste Noire song has a real "baby's first trap song" vibe to it. Very uninteresting and underdeveloped beat. I'd rather listen to Gummo.
