Voivod - Silver Machine.

Never really invested that much time to Voivod, but I saw them live in Copenhagen yesterday and they destrooooooyyyyed!!!!!! Tiny venue, Chewy was 5 feet from me and I seriously have never experienced such a great interaction from a whole band and the audience before. It was a sunday evening, but like Snake said "This feels like a friday". Utterly amazing!!!!

Chuck does have a flair for catchiness in his lyrics and riffing, even if this stuff really isn't the most advanced metal around. Andrew's drumming is very good and frankly quite underrated. Murphy sounds classy but only has a couple of catchy moments IMHO, a problem that would plague him for his whole career.

Paradise Lost - Icon

Autumn time again, falling rotting leaves, chillness in the air, massive grey clouds hoovering above and a great soundtrack to support all this.

Such an exceptional and deep album that (weeping) words become useless to even describe it...

You should! The first and the last albums in particular are great IMO. Got some similar memories: the song Trollfan was mine and my then gf's favorite song.

Sun Ra - Space is the Place

Don't usually listen to jazz but this is absolutely heavy in its own way. Hits that sweet spot between extremely ccomplicated structure and chaos. And it's catchy as hell!

Pretty Maids - Love Games

Damn, this has to be the cheesiest, most radio-friendly song from the Pretty Maids. If this was released as a single in the US, this would've been a sure radio and MTV hit. This doesn't sound like glam, it sounds more like AOR in the vein of Journey and Toto's hardest moments.

Currently, listening to Sargeist - Let the Devil In. I have to say that it is a very impressive album.

Pagan Altar - Rising of the Dead

It took me a bit to get into the folky trappings and less overtly doomy sound of modern Pagan Altar, but this entire album is really a brilliant swansong. The closer also never fails to tug at my heartstrings.

Playing some Cypher now!

...And Oceans - Aphelion

The riffs are nothing impressive, but i love how they meld with those soft keyboards and weird sounds. Overall i'm enjoying what i'm hearing. God bless metalhead girls worldwide! :)

King Diamond - Welcome Home

Great songwriting but the production is step down from Abigail. Needs more thump, a bit more ass.

Sacral Rage - Eternal Solstice

If this first track is anything to go by, this record has more of of a technical thrash thing going on than the debut, which is really cool. I'm not too hot on the vocals, but I can get used to pretty much any vocals if the music's good enough, which it definitely is here.

Death Angel - Lost

This song is quite unique among Death Angel's back catalog. It's not the usual fast, thrash song you'd expect from them. It's not a ballad. It trudges on a mid-tempo pace but doesn't sound like your usual metal song. It's definitely a standout from 'The Evil Divide'.

Taake - Hordaland Doedskvad I

Saw them last night, show of the year!
The sounds were perfect (crystal clear tremolo picking is a rarity in a black metal live show) damn great players, great song selection and Hoest is a madman on the stage

I can't really point a single highlight but this song's first riff shaked the place

Bruce Dickinson - The Tower

Bruce's singing on this one is pretty much my gold standard for what good metal singing is. Just so great.

Funny you mention this, because I've had 'Gates of Urizen' stuck in my head lately, despite not having listened to this album in ages. Good stuff.

Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time

(The song, not the album.) It's been nearly four years (!) since 'Beyond the Red Mirror' came out, and it's never gotten old for me. What a wonderful album. Strangely, though, 'At the Edge of Time' (album) hasn't aged as well for me, even though it was more exciting to me initially than its successor.

It's a 100% album for me. It's actually amazing how well-written it really is, how unique and powerful.

And yeah that Blind Guardian album smokes. I love it more than anything since Imaginations, easy. That song you listed, I was fucking floored by when it first came on - a tremendous piece. Hope their next album is as good.

Judging from what you've said in reviews, I like their post-'Imaginations' stuff a lot better than you do, so I'd say it's my favorite since 'A Night at the Opera', and that, easily. And what's funny is that I was rather put off by it on my first couple of listens. 'At the Edge of Time' blew me away immediately, but it had the advantage of following the lackluster 'A Twist in the Myth'. But before long I realized that 'Beyond' took what 'Edge' did and perfected it, and it was just too much to process at first. Yeah, even though they're my favorite band of all time, Blind Guardian can still overwhelm me, haha.

For me BTRM just had the right kind of raw, heavy guitar attack and classic aggression mixed with their new symphonic stuff. It was done in a way that everything else in recent years had not been, more energetic and less polished, despite its loads of orchestrations - it just felt more organic and hungry, if ya know what I mean. I didn't think any of the post-Imaginations material was terrible or anything, but it just never did very much for me.

Dynazty - Starfall
