Did you notice that it's a cover of Black Sabbath "The Wizard"?

Hell no, although that's not so surprising, I don't listen to Black Sabbath that often. I have to listen to both versions again. Very interesting.

EDIT: I listened to both again. Yeah, that's a very cool cover. It is recognizable, mostly from the bass line, but certainly an original representation.

 At Scorntyran'ts Meatloaf review..especially the verdict at the end: "A Hamburger ad that goes on for ten minutes"...Gotta say that your more, shall we say, critical displays in this thread are most entertaining.

Hel: "Förfall"

Practically sounds like a metal band. While distortion and picking aren't really requisite for the genre, this really isn't too far off from some kind of speed metal. Except they aren't really pushing themselves, and that's rather a pity. I like the somewhat vintage sound and the songwriting seems pretty solid. This is very happy, celebratory music, and the singing, especially that chorus part, sounds a wee bit on the goofy side. I have no idea what they're singing about but it manages to remind me of Alvin and the Chipmunks when they all sing together in harmony like that! I know napero is always talking about this band from Finland that makes "almost metal" for kids, and I believe Japan has such a band as well (?), and while I've never heard such music I can easily imagine it sounding rather like this. There are even good melodic lead refrains but they never really take off into a solo section or anything. Cute, fun....I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals but this would be a good thing to put on early during a party. I do appreciate what they were going for with the clear, not-very-heavy production that smacks quite a bit of the 1980s...

The misunderstood- Golden Glass

I like a fair bit of psychedelic stuff but generally more recent attempts at it; Bardo Pond, Fushitsusha, LSD March, CCCC, Galax- generally the really far out, space-tripping variants of the genre. Misunderstood aren't going to change my world but this is a pretty cool song and would've been crazy as hell back in '66. Sweet main riff, vocals however were rather annoying, liked the occaisonal dalliance w/indian melodies. Not a bad tune by any means, but I think I was hoping for some slightly more out there jams and the track just never really took off, in my opinion. Certainly not bad and imma give the whole album a curio download for sure.

I'm listening to your link, Caspian. The song is by Austin Wintory, called The Road of Trials and is made for a soundtrack for a game, Journey. And there you have the problem: it's not meant to keep the attention, it's complementary to something visual and active. The song meanders, knows a few crescendo's, but basically it's not something I would want to pay too much attention to. It's really very well made and quite good, but soundtracks just do not do it for me, ever.

'Splosions in the Sky are one of my all time favourite bands, one of the best live acts I've ever seen and in general they're super good. Pretty pumped you linked this one actually, Earth is not a Cold Dead Place is such a treasured record but it's been one I've sort of forgotten, I guess. One of my all time favourites and this is bringing back all these fond memories of seeing them playing basically the entire thing live. Fantastic tune, this one, love the way it builds, love the multitude of guitar parts (post-rock does not have to be boring to play!) love the idiosyncratic drumming, love everything about it really. I've got the CD somewhere but I can't really wait so imma download the album and give it a listen. Cheers!

Nice to hear that, Caspian. I love the band and had the pleasure to see two live shows by them in recent years. Incredible, what an experience.

Midlake - Core of Nature
I never heard of this band before. Not too strange, since this folk/indy rock type of style never gets high rotation on any of the Dutch radio channels and it's not really the music of my friends and peers. (A few of them are into folk, but since I'm more steeped into extreme metal, they tend to let it lie. Sometimes unfortunately, other times I don't really mind) Some comparisons do come to mind: Jetro Thull, Fleetwood Mac and, strangely enough, Radiohead and not from their earlier phase. That makes for an interesting combination and I will try to listen to some more of this. I like this.

Chelsea Wolfe - Halfsleeper

One girl and her guitar, with a hollow, almost cold reverb for companionship which could have been quite dull if it wasn't for her beautiful, haunting voice. This is a slow burner, and doesn't really have much in the way of a crescendo to it, it's more a tapestry of shifting moods woven together in a trance-like nature. Her voice is truly wonderful, and perfectly restrained, giving out hints of deeper, cloudier melancholy in just the right doses, flowing like rivulets of water down a cold windowpane. This needs no other instrument to accompany the tone of this track, and it's done live I might add, but towards the end, a effect loop is added to further heighten the mood with a droning, higher pitched tone to wind everything down. It comes across as relatively simple music-wise, but that voice and phrasing gives it plenty of emotive power, as she wraps herself around the linear finger-plucked chord work, which is done to a gorgeous effect. Quite decent stuff.

Something equally beautiful to my ears.

Dead Can Dance - De Profundis (Out Of The Depths Of Sorrow)

Ah, Dead Can Dance. One of my all time favourite bands (with the exception of Spiritchaser haha). Been a big fan since high school, which was around the time of the invention of the wheel. I had the pleasure of seeing them live a few months ago, which was an incredible experience. De Profundis is not a "busy" track, being built around an organ background with occasional timpani and bell percussion work. All of which highlights Lisa Gerrard's incredible voice soaring above all the world's cares. An absolutely essential album. I'd also add - if you are a fan of this era of DCD, you should get a copy of Arcana's "Cantar de Procella".

Nurse with Wound- Yagga Blues

Oh man. I'd never heard NwW before but I'd always assumed they were a pretty cool deal. This song however, really sucks. Pointless structuring that I can't understand for the life of me, an annoyingly persistent generic african woman singing along, lame looping, poor percussion, this basically sucks in every single level. I was hoping for some harrowing industrial, instead I get some of the worst "ethnic" music I've ever heard. Boo!

Spoiler: show
Nice review. I personally started listening to DCD when I was around 18, which over half my lifetime ago now... I actually do own Cantar de Procella and love it immensely - almost as much as the debut  . I too had the pleasure of seeing DCD live in February at the Sydney Opera house, and was impressed and utterly beside myself to be able to see them in the flesh, and I also believe that Anastasis is a solid album. Interesting how you have singled out Spiritchaser, being that it's also my least listened to DCD album. Too many other great ones around it.

That track makes more sense in the context of the album I guess. His early stuff is exactly as you describe - harrowing industrial. But later on it became really psychedelic with lots of Krautrock influences. You should check out "Soliliquies for Lillith" as a better example of his early stuff I guess.

Fever Ray - Dry And Dusty

Interesting, eclectic mix of electronic minimalism and ambiance. The vocals are almost mechanical in their approach that they were not at all what I was expecting from this track, having a strange tone to them that seems to smack of autotune, but it's not - it's rather clever harmonising. There is another vocalist employed here too, and she adds some even more clarity to this... slumber-like tune. I have never heard this group before, and have no idea how to categorize it either, as it morphs several types of genres with seamless effect, as there are hints of nineties indie, new wave etc and... pop? It's all over rather quickly too, and never really seems to evolve past the initial premise of the song, with it's pinging back-drop for a beat, because I was half expecting something else to be around the corner, but never exactly sure what. For what it is, it's... blissful and glassy with synths dreamily floating behind the vocals - like being in a void, suspended, drifting effortlessly towards a distant light. Not too bad at all I guess, seeing as I like some dream/synthpop and ambient electronic to an extent.

now I have seen these guys live a couple of times, and for me, this is my favourite track of theirs.

It's the same vocalist the whole way through, Crushed. She uses that pitch shifted somnambulant african male thingy all the time. Fever Ray is her solo project. Concrete Walls and Coconut may be more up for your liking if you're bored, Concrete in particular. Imma check your song out in a little while. Cheers!

The Tea Party- Sister Awake

This is quite cool. I was a bit uncertain of the somewhat dad-rock-ish start of the tune, but then the drums kick in, energy levels rise and it gets quite good. It's well executed but it doesn't really tick any of my buttons- the instrumentation is nice but, the climax aside, it's folk rocky strains are never really fierce or frantic enough for me to get into hugely. It just doesn't quite click, really. Basically I would've preferred it if it was 8 minutes longer and the singer yelled the entire time, instead of just at the end, haha. Would be fun live too and I can see myself seeing them when/if they play WA.

This Will Destroy You, "Communal Blood"

Ah, this band! Saw them live in late 2011 or so I think it was, and they were really impressive. They didn't really play much like this, though. Beautiful, stirring, and rather drony with huge, prolonged orchestral-style chords played on what I assume to be mostly synth (though there are likely some "real" strings in there somewhere, too). There's a lot of contrast between the expectant, quiet section and the crescendos, which come gradually but never quite in the way that you'd anticipate. Some nice use of ringing cymbals in these louder moments, too, which I think are the only percussive elements used in this piece, although unfortunately I'm at work and my headphones are crap, so it's possible that I'm missing some layers here. I'm afraid if they had played material like this at the show the power would have been somewhat lost as the audience was among the worst I've ever witnessed. So yeah, this music didn't "move" much but it was very evocative and showed a somewhat different side of the band from the more guitar/drum-based one that I'm used to.

pretty sure it's all guitars man. Their whole newest album is like, almost ambient-drone throughout, some of it's even a bit Nadja-esque. Quite a big improvement from their earlier stuff which in my opinion was good but very similar to MOgwai/EiTS/God is an Astronaut and all that.

Ligeti: "Lux aeterna"

Mystical. Transcendent. Beauty. The corralling, unfettered beauty, unmatched and spoiled by instrumentation. Ligeti is, and will always be, A MASSIVE influence on my own vocal and drone arrangements. I would post Baptist's "Death" for comparison if I didn't think it was such blasphemy and self-indulgence to do so. But. simply put - haunting yet life affirming. Terror, but beauty. I wept. We should all weep.

This is beautiful. I am a sucker for vast, open-ended deep music such as this, and the cold, mechanical, yet still somehow intimate beat is transcendental - all encompassing depth, bottomless and warm. Her vocals are sublime, as is the gradual build of choral synths, shining like a giant beacon in the night. I have no idea what king of genre this is, but goddamn if it's not good. The relative surface simpleness belies it's complexity, a perfect juxtaposition of elements working harmoniously to lull you into the pulse of the track - only her voice will eventually guide you. Damn near perfect.

This... maybe a trifle colder.

[:SITD:] - Redemption
I'll fully admit to not being well versed in electronic music, so I won't attempt to describe this along sub-genre lines. This starts off with the type of big booming beat that springs to mind when thinking of the more dance-oriented electronic stuff. This subsides for a brief passage of chilly piano and swiftly creeps back in. Then the vocals come in - I don't even know what the correct way to describe them is, really out of my element here.. It's a more rock-y and less melodramatic version of what you'd hear in the general goth-electronic fare, but I still don't think I'm hitting the nail on the head. This is weird it's paradoxically relaxed feeling while also giving off a totally wired vibe. In the end I don't mind it, but it's not really my scene.

One of my favourite songs of 2013 so far:

Man's Gin - Deer Head and The Rain

So I listened to this album because dystopia4 is crazy about it, but I found it overall lacking. This song just so happens to be the best one on there. The various instruments are well used, and there's pretty strong americana melody to just sort of chill to. The guy's vocal lines are actually kind of interesting, but his voice itself just isn't that powerful or even very good. The aaaaaah's reinforce the chilling mood. Still, after a few listens, I don't feel the urge to put it back on.

To be honest, after listening to it an absurd number of times, I've come to the conclusion that the first album is way better. I do agree that the instrumentals are unnecessary. I think the songwriting on the debut is generally better, and I liked how that album had a more cohesive sound, here it really is all over the place. I think he does have a great voice, but here he's trying to sound like too many other singers. That said, I still think this is a good album.

Saw the album on the front page of pitchfork today and my heart sank a little.

Houses: "Beginnings"

Quite pleasant, relaxing, beautiful even. A very gentle, low-key arrangement with some spacey, reverberating guitar, synth, and minimal percussion. The singer softly intones what seems to be a hymn to love and, just maybe, hope. I have to say though I'm not quite into the style of singing employed here, with his fairly deep voice starting off notes with a kind of throaty noise...just not something I prefer to hear in most cases, but he still gets the task done and mostly fits tte music pretty well without overdoing it much. I expected a crescendo and indeed got a kind of payoff after two minutes, where the synth strings really kicked in and there were some big sounding drum fills, yet the crashing wall of sound I was sort of anticipating did not happen, and hey, this is actually a good thing in this case. The piece maintains this calm, reflective feel throughout, and is all the better for it during its short length. I did have a feeling it would function even better in the context of an album as the ending was more abrupt than I thought it would be. Anyway, that was nice -- doesn't sound too complimentary a term, I know, but in this instance it is well met -- and I may try and have a listen to the record at some point.

What's Abom left me here eh? Well it's...

Grand Funk Railroad - Into The Sun

Goin' waaay back here people. The wistful, gradual building intro is very playful, and kept me second guessing where this was leading. The panning mix here is interesting as the drums seem to be firmly planted in my left headphones/ears, while the bass (which is clearly, and awesomely audible) is right down the damn middle, cementing everything in deeeep, groovy pulses - pretty fuckin' cool actually. The vocals are awesome, as is the guitar playing, when it arrives, riffing their way into a true jam, but with solid cohesion. The chorus rules; great harmonising vocals and flowing melodies used to perfection. I'm sure I detected some hint of a quasi double bass lick from the drummer towards the end underneath the scratchy wah pedal use though... anyway, this really ain't my kind of thing, but hell if you were cruising down a deserted road in the middle of summer, or smoking a joint with some buds, you could pick worse songs, that's for sure. Rockin' and entertaining.

Surprise, surprise. Total mood change (the clip is pretty awesome too).

Mind.In.A.Box- Escape

Fuck this was cool. I'm not normally a huge fan of stuff that's so thoroughly artificial, but this is some of the most immersive music I've heard a super long time. That fan made video is brilliant, btw. But yeah, the music- I love the way all these (not sure on genre) original-Unreal-Tournament-soundtrack-synths fold around the quite unique vocals. It's so dystopian yet still, I guess, rather transcendent in it's yearning for something beyond futuristic techno-cities and/or DM on the original Morpheus map. I'm not sure if it's just the low quality rip or what but I think the slightly low bit-rate production here actually helps give it a bit of a jittery, really enigmatic vibe, as it's not entirely clear what's happening all the time, which I really like. Awesome tune man.

Glad you dug that one, as mind.in.a.box are pretty much exactly (when they get it right) what you described there - fully immersive, dystopian disconnection, often emotional, fused with some human sensibilities. Interesting group, that I like quite a fair bit.

Jars of Clay "Frail."

I really dug the vibe of this song. The simple, mellow, yet instantly memorable acoustic guitar lines and soft vocal lines have a magic all their own that few bands seem to get right- and when they do, it is very effective. This song reminds me of that "phone booth" song by the Primitive Radio Gods. If you don't remember em, think mid- 1990s, softer side of "alternative." While this description conjures up images of plastic goo goo dolls and tepid hootie blow-hard lameness, I do NOT feel that about this track. Those other more commercialized pop bands sounded fake, this sounds heartfelt and genuine. The simple acoustic melody feels pure and uncluttered with commercialism, and the song itself succeeds in setting a somber yet still uplifting mood- similar to the aforementioned Primitive Radio Gods. "Blue Sky" by Pink Floyd would be another song I might compare it to although that comparison is more superficial- this song is haunting and beautiful in it's own distinct way. Good choice of song. And no, I am not at all put off by the band's religious leanings, in fact sometimes I feel that same "Frail" feeling and need some higher, supernatural positive spirit to uplift me.

Now a disclaimer: Normally I love ripping on this band, their music, and their fans (no it's not mallcore, but some might think its just as bad!) but in their earliest incarnation they did manage, despite all odds, to produce some interesting (and actually GOOD) music, like this early track.

Yeah, that isn't his signature.

Grateful Dead - Mountains of the Moon
All the stuff I've heard from this band I've hated and this is a bit better, though I still don't love it. The sparse and slightly exotic psych-folk instrumentation is a bit interesting, it almost sounds baroque(ish) at times. I like the vocal melodies, but I'm not sure about his voice. Still, I just can't get across enough how lame the Grateful Dead I've heard. I find it hard to understand their rabid fanbase, I mean I know a guy who followed them around on tour and sold some weird gas drug at their shows and loved the music when he was 20 (so like 15 years ago). I dunno, this wasn't bad, but I'm not going to rush to check out their early discography or anything.

The Gun Club - Mother of Earth

I'll admit, I'm still getting used to that psychedelic/bluesy sound, but I like the song overall. At first I found it bland, but it picked up quite nicely throughout the song. I really like the vocals, goes beautifully with the music. Also, the flow overall is very well done, can't help with the fact that the song gives me that western feel, very vivid! Lastly, the lyrics are nice!

The Reign of Kindo - Just Wait

Maaaaaannn. Been awhile since I've given RoK a listen. It's a wonderful mixture of progressive rock/weirdo Japanese anime soundtrack music and a touch of ethnic influences. Admittedly, I was reminded why I haven't listened to them in awhile as the songwriting itself is kind of weak - in spite of the amazing musicianship. Definitely a great band to watch though - something that would be a choice fit for an outdoor festival with beers and food. Soothing vocals reminiscent of a young Billy Joel fused with odd time signatures and a really good sense of pacing. Not my thing in studio, but this is a cool video because you can actually watch them perform - which is where the bread and butter lies.

The Mountain Goats - No Children

Phew, thanks for saving me from having to review that Reign of Kindo song, Frog. That song annoyed the shit out of me. All of the worst qualities of late night comedy show house band stuff with over-indulgence oozing everywhere, plus a big heap of boring John Meyer-ishness to get your mom's panties wet. Awful stuff.

Anyway. The Mountain Goats! I sorta like earlier Mountain Goats material where it was more low-fi more, mainly because John's vocals just...aren't really that good. On the earlier stuff they were less prominent due to the production but starting on this album they got a little too polished for me. It's a good enough song, though, and of course the lyrics are great.

M83: "Cyborg"

I liked the way this started out, with a lurching, mechanical yet still kind of dancey vibe to it, almost like an instrumental Gary Numan or something. More layers were added slowly, but that synth drone was ever-present, and the tones were comfortingly 1980s, including that cute "pieu!" "laser" percussion sound, which probably came from Kraftwerk in the previous decade now that I think about it, but still...The sound was just a little bit ominous and I knew some big change was coming, and indeed, the piece got a bit noisy and bombastic, and at this point I'm afraid it lost me. Big synthetic strings all over the place, basically, and the original mood of the piece felt somewhat abandoned, or just swamped by everything else that was going on. I've been getting into more "synth pop" type stuff lately I guess but I'm not so sure if I want to look more into this entity, based on that track at least. I admired the somewhat edgy, almost dystopian feeling (or am I just imagining that) but didn't really feel much in the execution, if that makes sense.

@Abominatrix:
Spoiler: show
M83 are actually a really frustrating band for me, haha. Your review of this single song kinda sums up my feelings on the band in general. The first album has some decent moments but was largely underdeveloped, then the album that "Cyborg" track is from is a big step in the right direction but still leaves something to be desired. The third album has a lot more use of vocals, which has the effect of making all their non-vocal stuff sound like filler tracks, which is a shame. It also introduced real drums but eschewed the gauzy synths in favor of more synth strings and ballads...I'm honestly sort of afraid to go beyond that as I sense more disappointment in store. For a little while there he did have a solid knack for fusing pretty, minimalist electronica with wide-eyed shoegazey stuff, at least.

Suede - Pantomime Horse

you know, being a Dutch kid of the nineties, britpop had a lot of airplay and I had a lot of exposure to the genre. The discussion was if Blur or Oasis was the best of them all. No one payed that much attention to the better one: Suede. It's the only britpop band I still listen to. This song is of their first album. It's a dramatic ballad and it works. Well... Almost. I can't really connect to this song. Never could. I can see why people love it, but it's not my kind of vibe. I like their uptempo music more.

Gilbert Becaud- Natalie

Really unsure what I say about this. Some old french crooner doing old french crooner stuff, there's a string section, a bunch of spanish vibes from the flamenco guitar floating around the mix. Yeah I dunno man, the tempo change was kind of cool and this would be agreeable if I was in Paris in summer having a coffee or something but otherwise it's crooner stuff, which is probably my least favourite genre by a long way. Honestly, it was really boring, haha.

YEEEEESSSSSSS.

Oh man. I fucking love her. Swirling bass tones accent slight variations on a theme, minimalist without constraint. Dreamy poppy melodies soar over a vocal delivery resembling glass shards rustling in a plastic bag - sort of there - piercing but weightless and incredibly sharp. Layers upon layers of subtlety culminate in a Glass-ian manner - where the whole peice sort of folds in on itself rather than building up to a climax; exhausting the intricate nature of the singular note before moving on. Angelic, processional, divine even. A wondrous exercise in restraint, and exactly how pop artists can learn from the drone composition. A crushingly beautiful exercise in restraint and structure.

tl;dr - I have a huge boner for Julianna Barwick and would listen to her read a phone book over her ethereal synths over the vast majority of music.

The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You

Man, I'm always so torn on this band, and recently I think I've pinpointed why: I think their sadder songs (like this one) are pretty fucking great but I tend to get this vague sense of insincerity or something like it in their more upbeat songs that puts me off for whatever reason. Anyway, I can't say I'm extremely familiar with the band's whole discography or anything, but I have listened to this song in particular a bunch and like it quite a lot. Come to think of it I'm probably a sucker for songs that follow this particular structure, i.e. where the chorus pretty much is the same as the verse, so it's just an AAAA structure and emotional weight is heaped on via subtle addition of instrumentation rather than holding back on the good melodies until the chorus comes around.

Low - Closer

This is...alt-rock? I'm not familiar enough with this type of music to know the exact genre, but this is like all the slowest parts of the slowest ballads you've heard. It's heavy in everything except for its aesthetics, which is something I really appreciate. It almost approaches the qualities of post-rock in the slow build and how much space the music takes up with so little, and the vocal harmonies are soulful and consistently rich. It's always nice to hear male/female duets, that doesn't get done as often as I'd like it to with this type of music. It doesn't really have a climax, but I don't really think it's supposed to; it's dismal, lamenting and doesn't have the kinetic energy to go anywhere like that, and then it ends. Really, really strong stuff- anything that carries a lot of emotional weight is usually a hit with me.
