Laaz Rockit- Annihilation Principle.

OK, this has got to be LR's best album hands down. It's far more memorable and a lot more fun than the follow-up album, and takes the catchiness of Know Your Enemy and cranks up the intensity several notches. "Fire in the Hole, "Shadow Company", "Chain of Fools", "Chasin' Charlie", the cover of "Holiday in Cambodia", ALL fucking stuck in my head!

Late this afternoon:

Incantation - Profane Nexus

Innovative ideas in some parts but run-of-the-mill in other parts, following previously grounded standards. Obviously not as challenging as early Incantation although remaining noticeably heavy and sincerely menacing, in general.

Later tonight:

Mercyful Fate - Melissa

Metal-extraordinaire. Romantically bewitching and challenging as it ever was the first time I heard it. This album pronounced originality most clearly with its clear-visioned, capacious musicianship.

Alice in Chains - The One You Know

Growing on me. Sounds more exciting than the stuff on the previous album, and seems to flow better as a song. Hoping the whole album is this good.

I remember buying the tape after i saw the video for Fire in the Hole on the Headbanger's Ball. :headbang:

:np: Acheron - The Pain Dominion Demo

Superb power/thrash! I was very lucky to score this tape from ebay a few years ago after a lengthy search. It feels nice crossing off items from my mile long want list.

The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity

The amount of emotional depth of this record still blows my mind - the interplay between the arcane acoustic guitars and the otherworldly riffs is absolutely fantastic.

Iced Earth- "Defiance".

Iced Earth has roughly one song on each album that doesn't utterly blow ass. This is the one off Incorruptible.

This new Black Fast song fucking rips. Aggressive blackened thrash metal with some good solos. I like the guy's voice, really fitting for this style. These dudes are carrying that thrash metal torch.

Black Majesty - New Horizons

This album rips so hard. They just kill it on here with Gio's vocals and the crazy Maiden/Fates Warning-ish guitar runs.

Slayer - Show No Mercy

Why is it that this album's first side, with the exception of "Metalstorm/Face the Slayer" is so damn boring to me and then the second side just fucking annihilates everything in its path?

Also, Dave's drumming is competent, but pretty uninspired. I expect better, Dave!

Asphagor - Monodia (He, My wall)

This album just gets better with every spin. The amount of melody, different musical styles and influences keeps unfolding, with every song delivering a different experience, making for a very diverse listening, almost like you have a bunch of bands on shuffle mode.

That album and the one before are so painfully unknown, it's a real pity :(

Skyforger - Son of the Mare

This just rocks. The ending riff fest is one of those rare cases where flute and electric guitars work wonderfully togheter

Yeah, they're the best albums the band did. In Your Honor is amazing, too, but the first two albums just have a more personal touch and more unique instrumental prowess/style. Not much else like em - like 50/50 of old Fates Warning/Maiden style stuff and modern Europower.

That Fates Warning feeling is what attracted me, i really like how it lurks beneath the modern production in those albums. With few twists of two familiar sounds they managed to find an identity, and it's always kinda sad to see a band with an identity get little recognition :(

I mean, I'll agree SNM gets better as it goes on, but come on, Die By The Sword and Fight Til Death boring?

Battle Beast- Bastard Son of Odin

That beginning made me think I was in the honeycomb levels of DKC2. I understand how some people think they're coming close to Nightwish clone territory, but Nightwish wish they could come up with songs like this and Bringer of Pain.

If this refers to what I think it does, this is a very milquetoast take on it.

Enslaved - E

I certainly believe their last input was rather superior insofar as guitar harmonies and overall riff-structures. I am even willing to go so far as to say that "In Times" advanced in creating larger scales of riff-thoughts which possessed grandeur generating a wholistic approach which was greater than its individual riffs/drums/synthesizers in terms of their individuals functions. It was, more clearly put, a system of wholes operating under a very intricately built climate of elements. In times was a noticeably more wholistic orchestrated vision of riff-maneuvering (advantageously arranged in comparison to "E") swimming swellingly with symphonic elements that were much more dedicated (and succeeding) to a much more coherent system. On "E" not so much. Slightly disappointed.

Deafheaven - Sunbather

This is enjoyable. Though definitely not black metal. I don't mean this as a detraction, either. Looking beyond the blasting drums, you only hear shoegaze, post-hardcore and alternative riffage and voicings. Exactly zero black metal riffs - which are more than the Balalaika style in which they're picked. Still nice and heavy though, if I had to label this I'd call it pool party metal or something.

Really holds up. Exceptional modern melodeath with Sybreed-esque cleans and an upbeat feel.

I really hesitate with this one too. Both albums (like other RW albums) are pure masterpieces.

Simply amazing. Every single track is a killer tune. Maybe my favorite album of the year so far.
