Quote:
“‘Rebirth By Blasphemy‘ is a rebirth. It’s a change in life and it’s a rebirth of doing whatever the fuck you want and seeing what happens after that. It’s about saying yes, taking opportunities, taking a fucking chance.”

“Overall, I would say the sound is pretty vicious, vicious but I keep things hooky, and that’s what I like it to be. I want to still keep it raw but at the same time I wanted this record to be a little more hi-fi, which was my only plan when I started making it.”

There's already a new song that's been out for a while:

I'm a huge Midnight fan so I'm pumped for this. I'm always down for more filthy blackened sleaze! He signed to Metal Blade, so I'd be willing to bet that there will be more tours and more frequent releases. It really seemed like that was what he was referring to in the quote.

Pretty good stuff. The benchmark for me is Satanic Royalty. You know that whole tread that is popular "do you listen to bands with questionable messages"? I haven't posted about Midnight in there, but sometimes SOMETIMES I get a little bit of a gross feeling listening to him (them?) because of how misogynistic it can be. HOWEVER, I've never read or seen an interview where he outright speaks about that stuff, so I take it as part of the genre, and that it's a gimmick/entertainment.

This is such an awesome band. I don't go much for modern black metal, but I love these bands that keep that first wave sound going. Just like Inculter or Deathhammer.

Also Jimbies, if it helps you out at all I saw only one person in real life who was a Midnight fan and wearing a shirt of the band. It was a woman.

Saw them at a Fest a couple years ago and just recently opening for Obituary and Abbath. They fucking rocked hard. Will get this when it comes out.

It really just seems like an over the top version of the Satanic porn type of lyrics that we all heard in some songs of old bands like Death SS and Sarcofago. I'd put actual misogyny on dudes like Joey DeMaio.

Complete and Total Fucking Midnight comp is 200x better than SR for me. He talks about the misogyny stuff a bit in this interview, essentially saying there's nothing wrong with being a slut:

https://www.nocleansinging.com/2014/10/ ... -midnight/

(and also yeah that it seems to be "topical" for the kind of music he's playing)

I'm always looking forward to new Midnight material, even though they've never topped the early pre-album stuff for me.

Yikes, this actually made me feel kinda worse about it. BUT, it's an old interview. Still really dig the track.

He very much plays a "character", I don't think he's actually a misogynistic speed snorting devil worshipper.

Midnight are great, if you ever get the chance to see them live, GO!

I don't think there is much yikes here. A lot of the time the word slut is used to shame women's sexuality, but saying "there's nothing wrong with being a slut" is at it's worst a neutral statement, but can be seen as a positive statement as well.

It was more the way he used the term "gay" earlier in the interview and when he talked about girls wearing Midnight shirts because (and i'm paraphrasing) "they like to shake their tits and asses to songs in 4/4 time", as if females are stupid, primitive characters that couldn't like anything else or simply be fans of his band for the same reasons males are.
Anyway, I really REALLY don't want this to turn into a huge debate and eventually get the thread locked. His music is great, we can just keep talking about that.

This I highly agree with, and I wish metal had more over-the-top characters like this. Performers that we know aren't really like this, instead of some of the people I've come across or read about trying to use extreme metal to justify being a shitty person.

I'm disappointed, tbh. Nothing has come close to Satanic Royalty for me.

For me No Mercy for Mayhem is the high mark. But yeah this one is so far shaping up to be as middling as the last album.

I really love the new song. I agree that Satanic Royalty was the high mark from Athenar, but I love all of the records and I'm sure this one will be no different. New song is the strongest one released so far, IMO.

Yeah, it's just a Venom parody- with really good music! Satanic Royalty was the best! (so far).

Listened twice so far today. I think it's their best Satanic Royalty. Nothing new, but tighter and more focused than the last two, with hooks galore.

But man, Devils' Excrement. What a pile of literal shitty lyrics.

First full listen was pretty great. Little more melodic than before but still fast and intense. Forever glad that Midnight always remembers to write actually catchy songs.

Yeah fun stuff. Venom worship and nowt wrong with that.

The promotion of their female following is odd but quite frankly i dont really care. Good for everyone involved i reckon.

I saw they made a video for "Fucking Speed and Darkness!"

I got the chance to check out the album over the weekend and holy shit does it deliver. As many have said, it has the hookiness and catchiness that you might expect from Midnight, and I feel like his song-writing has gotten even better! I'm looking forward to giving it more spins.

I love all of the little "rock" touches Midnight puts in their riffage. Still visceral and powerful but catchy like hell too!

That was so fucking cool, thanks for sharing! It's insane that he just pulled a song out of his ass that's better than half the bands out there, it just sounds like another Midnight banger. I think it really speaks to the power of just really committing to the first good ideas that come to your head. You can second guess yourself all day long and try to get it perfect, but you'll probably just end up wasting a lot of time.

As for the album, I've really been enjoying listening to it. I think "Escape the Grave" and "You Can Drag Me Through Fire" are two of my favorites. The main riff on the former is so damn tasty, and the chorus on the latter is catchy as hell, and reminds me of a badass '80s metal banger. I noticed this album sort of ties together everything he's experimented with over the years. A lot of these songs have a lot of the punk sound that he really had on the early days from the first compilation.
