Death - Individual Thought Patterns

My favourite era of Death will always be Scream Bloody Gore going onto Leprosy, but the musicianship and melodies on this album fucking slaps. Once I cognitively accepted that Death stopped being the Death/Thrash band that they were and moved onto a proggy sound, I properly appreciated this album.
Hell yeah; I've always felt that ITP is not only the best Death record, but also just the best Death Metal album of all time, period.

Requiem - Requiem Forever

Misleading title, they broke up shortly after. Pretty good album though.

Visions of Atlantis - Passing Dead End (live)

Probably their only song that I really like - nice faster-paced number with a catchy chorus and some not-totally-awful lyrics. Shame the live versions' guitars sound like total arse, though.

Omen - The Curse

Such a killer fast track this one is. Great bass tone by Jody Henry too. Somewhat controversially, I consider this the best Omen album and noticeably better than Battle Cry though you certainly can't go wrong with any of the Kimball albums. I haven't heard anything they did after that but from what I've read they didn't sustain that momentum. Still, these classics are hella fun to revisit.

Judas Priest - Halls of Valhalla

Time to give Redeemer of Souls a new chance. At least this song has it.

Lacuna Coil - Black Anima

I have not been a huge fan of the newer material by them, but I really like this album.

On CD, finally. A bit late to the party with this one.

I bought all their first four in these bundle packages of two each about five years back. Great quality and value.

Sean Rouse - Spilled Milk

An all time favorite comedy album for me.

Paysage d'Hiver - Über den Bäumen

Still my fave from Im Wald. The riff starting at 3:38 is so triumphant.

Psychotic Waltz - Ashes

The way they do these fucking haunting vocal melodies makes them easily a top tier act to me. The presence and atmosphere - shit.

I really need to check out Deadsoul Tribe - that's the band Buddy Lackey did after Psychotic Waltz. They've been on my to-do list for almost 20 years now  He also sang on The Shadow Theory's "Behind the Black Veil" - I haven't heard that one yet, but I'll fire that up on Spotify sometime tonight to see if its any good.

NP: Magnitude 9 "Chaos to Control"

Pretty nice prog metal.

I tried some of Deadsoul Tribe's stuff before the new PW album came out. I remember it being pretty good but it just lacked the charisma of PW. But I should give them a more dedicated listen.

Jeff Rosenstock - No Time to Skank

He decided to put out a ska-punk version of his last album "No Dream" called "Ska Dream" today because... well, why not, I guess.
I thought "No Dream" was great, and... well, I actually really love this version too. Catchy, energetic, fun and kinda weird (which is a good way to describe most of his stuff really). Jeff's a creative dude.

Voreus - The Proclamation

I generally stay away from Black/Death with Doom being thrown into the mix, but this is a very good cut.

Viking - Man of Straw

Sometimes you just need a classic.

Morticula Rex - The Great Devourer

Sounds like Hooded Menace meets early Sentenced; not a bad combo at all.

Cloven Hoof - Song for Orpheus

It sucks having all this social media now and being able to see the crazy views of someone like singer George Call - because this fucking guy has a tremendous voice. Great album.

Pounder- Breaking the World

Matt Harvey knows his extreme metal for certain, as seen with Gruesome, Dekapitator and Exhumed. But who knew he also knew his way around traditional metal so well? Overall what we have here is something between the dirty attitude of Motorhead and the more soaring melodic qualities of Judas Priest with elements of glam metal and old-school hard rock on top; this is especially evident in some songs' choruses. Overall good stuff, consistent and fun.

Inverloch - Lucid Delirium

Sounds closer to the modern bands that are inspired by Disembowelment than Disembowelment themselves, but what the hell...despite not being too original, I dig it.

Angel Dust - Bleed

This is just a great combo of both killer songwriting and mesmeric performances - those keys, Dirk's smooth voice, the groovy riff...

The rest of the album gets weirder, darker and sadder until the end and maybe that's why I like it, that it starts off so anthemic and fucking bellowing and then gets creepier and doomier. Interesting subversion. I reject the idea that the title cut's the only good tune.

Protector - A Shedding of Skin

Early 90s German deathrash is king.

Suizid - I Left This Life to Rot

Great DSBM, the clean guitar sections really work, I wish he did more the "clean moaning" type of vocals that are in the beginning.

Cannibal Corpse - Surround, Kill, Devour

One of my favorites off this banger of a record. The chorus makes me want to growl along.

Deep Purple - The Aviator

That this album isn't a rock classic just comes down to being released in the 90s instead of like eight to 10 years earlier.

Kvist - Forbannet være jorden jeg går på

That "madness riff" around 0:42 is so goddamn good! Folky, epic, evil... all at the same time. Very "folkish" with the demented elves theme.

Armored Saint - March of the Saint

you know, it would have been awesome if they had knocked out a re-recording of this album after finishing the Symbol of Salvation sessions. Can you imagine this album with that sound? As it is, we get Neutered Saint.

Metallica - Battery

Day 2 of 'getting to know Metallica' is going well. RTL was a decent record, looking forwards to Puppets now.

Blackbriar - Through the Crevice

Listening to their first full length, which just came out today. I thought their EPs were pretty damn good. So far, this album is too. Definitely one of the standout bands doing the whole female-fronted symphonic/gothic metal thing.
