Bilskirnir - Valhalla Is Calling

Great stuff!
No bad release from this band really.
The demos rock!

Skepticism - Calla

Not familiar with anything they did except for 'Ordeal' which I really liked. Trying this one now.

I like that this sounds so individual with the heavy organ/key/whatever type sounds and not just the usual slow riffs. Makes a difference. Seems good so far.

Poppy - Lessen the Damage

She went for a more alternative rock-inspired sound on her new album "Flux", it seems. There are even a couple tracks that lean heavily into shoegaze. Very different from "I Disagree", but still quite good (maybe better). I guess that Jack Off Jill cover was kind of a hint of things to come.

Metallica - Black album deluxe box set

Say what you like about Lars Ulrich, but he's primarily a music fan and knows exactly what kind of interesting and unreleased stuff people want in a box set. Lavish presentation, a ton of riff tapes/demos/rough mixes, seven live shows and a whole bunch of other stuff plus a wealth of recollections by and interviews with the people behind the biggest selling metal album in history, what's not to like?

Noble Beast - Iron Clad Angels

This album has held up quite well. I still feel as strongly about it now as I did then!

Don't take these lyrics all too literally then! ;-) except if that is gonna be part of your job, of course.

NP: Warrior Path - Avenger

A tad bit too many falsettos on that album, but some nice classic heavy metal from a fresh release. Great harmonies!

Iron Maiden - Darkest Hour

This song seemed to be somewhat polarizing. I think it's arresting. Very Bruce-solo-style. The writing is impeccable.

Rivers of Nihil - Tower 2

This album has been a boring slog so far. Came close to shutting it off early twice.

Merciful Fate - Don't break the oath

I just started listening to Merciful Fate and I oh my God what the hell have I been missing? King Diamond's vocals are amazing and the guitarwork here is pure heavy metal masterclass!

Absolutely! And I think "A Dangerous Meeting" might be the best thing Mr Diamond has ever recorded. Sounds like a signature tune showcasing the essence of his style.

Now playing: Bathory - Blood Fire Death

My favourite Bathory album. Has one of the greatest artworks in metal and definitely my favourite album intro of all time irrespective of genre. The spooky atmosphere combined with the landscape on the cover is really, really, er, spooky. Listen to this in early January when the Wild Hunt regularly gallops across the clouds of Europe. :oh shit:

Absolutely fucking on point with King and Fate. I will also track down King Diamond after Fate; I have heard that "Abigail" is King's peak.

Bathory is ma absolute favorite band. Blood Fire Death is the sharp apex of Quorthon. Everything that was built up in the first two albums and perfected into "Under the sign..." was twisted in a magnificent way to pave the path for epic metal.

Savatage - He Carves His Stone

There's such an incredible fucking confidence and charisma to this music. Just effortless. A real spark that burned out too soon.

Dark Moor- Walhalla

No idea why I haven't listened to their debut as often as Hall or Gates, it's fantastic, production issues aside.

Unto Others - Heroin

Kick ass gothic/heavy metal with a lot of energy and passionate harsh bellows. The rest of the album better keep up (the mixed reactions in the Unto Others thread makes me skeptical though!).

St. Vincent - Digital Witness

This is a really interesting, eclectic album... full of odd pulsating industrial tones, off-kilter vocal phrasing, and some pep.

You definitely can't go wrong with "Abigail". For most fans it's his "O:M" or "Master of Puppets". But the albums surrounding it are also interesting if you want to track his development. "Fatal Portrait" was very similar to Mercyful Fate, "Them" was slightly more technical / complicated than "Abigail", and "Conspiracy" ("Them Part II") was slightly more accessible / melodic / commercial than what had come before. In a way, the development was similar to Queensryche's ("The Warning" => "Empire") and Metallica's ("Kill…" => "Black Album"). In addition to the first four albums, I'd recommend "The Spider's Lullabye", by far the catchiest one. Hits, hits, hits… :hail:

NP: Znöwhite – Act of God

Haven't listened to this in ages.

Skepticism - The Rising of the Flames

The murky, dark feel of this really elevates it all. Just utterly intriguing, immersive stuff... I "get" them more now.

Seven Spires - The Paradox

Imagine early-2000s Dimmu Borgir, but a single vocalist was doing both the harsh vocals and the soaring cleans. That’s this song. It rules.

Falconer- Lord of the Blacksmiths

If For Life and Liberty wasn't on Chapters From a Vale Forlorn, I'd put the self titled as their best. But it doesn't so its not.

First time listening to this forgotten Filipino death metal band from the '90s, this is their recent material though.

Castle - Castle

It's like these guys blended everything they were influenced by and while this could have sounded a bit more refined, it's nonetheless pretty cool. What as the last time you heard doom/death metal with rock guitar solos?

Gabestok - På gravens rand

Discovered this great Danish band from a recommendation from another metal board. Pretty rockin' black metal with garage rock elements. It rocks hard and doesn't follow the usual black metal trope.

Sinoath - Black River Archeron

Melodic riffs that sound Hellenic as hell, gothic keys so prominent that you can't escape from the thick atmosphere - I love this kind of stuff and to think that this originates from 1991 just blows my mind.

Carcass - Dance of Ixtab

A nice punch in the gut of a wake-up call. The difference between this album and the last one is like night and day to me actually.

Virgin Steele - Kingdom of the Fearless

This album is a truly wild, ambitious piece of work.
