Amorphis - Summer's End

Never thought I'd say this but this is actually pretty catchy stuff as far as non-death metal Amorphis goes - definitely prefer it over Tales / Elegy.

That's one of my favorite songs of theirs. It always receives play around late August/early September to match the theme. I probably prefer those sorts of tracks myself (also "Alone", "Divinity", "The Way", and such), though it's really close for the Pasi era.

NP: Marcel Singor - "Authority"

It's always fascinating to hear these guitar super-virtuosos who play music that is poppier and vocal-driven as opposed to the instrumental and shred types. It's kind of like if Paul Gilbert, rather than being a huge fan of the Beatles and Cheap Trick, were instead into Prince and Funkadelic.

Circle Takes the Square - Crowquill

Hardcore Kid™-era me listened to "As the Roots Undo" repeatedly in the mid 00s.
That's probably because it's fucking great.

Pearl Jam - Sad (Live 10/29/13)

The thread talking about bands changing their sets night to night got me going though the 2013/14 tour for these guys and its 32-37 songs a night with all kinds of deep cuts every night.

Opeth - Deliverance

The contemplative moments really pronounce the intensity of this classic Opeth tune.

Nile - Barra Edinazzu

Never bothered too much with this band, but this sounds cool so far; it's brutal, yet atmospheric stuff.

Timeghoul - Infinity Coda

Can't say that I love this as much as others do, but this band was definitely something. You never know where these songs are heading towards and the result is, dare I say...something clearly progressive.

Usnea - Detritus

Highly expressive funeral doom with a lot of bright layers even when excessively solemn. The talent and taste of this band blows me away.

Black Sabbath - The Sabbath Stones

Heretic moment. Martin era Sabbath is the pinnacle of the band's discography? Not the most influential, or most "important" but I'm starting to come around to the idea that this 3 album run, Eternal Idol through Tyr, was the best Sabbath ever did. Not sold on it but starting to give the idea more merit.

Agreed, but I would limit the idea to "Headless Cross" and "Tyr".

Now playing: Ray Gillen's "Eternal Idol", just as great as Tony Martin's version and probably the origin of Martin's vocal style in Sabbath.

Spoiler: show

NICE! :-D

Ironically, THAT sounds more Deep Purple-ish to me than the album Sabbath did with Gillian!

It sure does! That one might be intentional, though.

The similarity between the "Headless Cross" cover and the artwork used for the cover version of "When Death Calls" was intentional, too. Of course!! I actually really like those pastiches / parodies of classic album artworks, here's one by Anthrax: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/A ... rax/655900

I was born on October 17th, 1993...the horror.

NP: Runemagick - The Venom

The entire album is pretty solid, but this track is quite something else...what a relentless riff-monster.

Listening to a leak of the new Lana Del Rey album. God, she needs someone to help her with some self-editing. There are some really amazing songs and ideas here, but the album as a whole is bloated and disjointed. Also, I don't believe she has ever said that Brian Fallon/Gaslight Anthem are an inspiration to her, but every once in a while (here and on older albums) she has some phrases/lyric lines that are very similar. Maybe that has to do with Jack Antonoff co-writing a lot of her stuff (even though it seems he wasn't a part of this new album.)

Ah well happy birthday for what it's worth.

St. Vincent - Digital Witness

A chilly, funky sort of pop jam.

I've never heard this band before. This is different than most Polish black metal.

This Ep is still my favorite thing that Mgla have put out. You should also check the split called "Crushing the Holy Trinity" by Mgla, Deathspell Omega, Clandestine Blaze, Musta Surma, Stabbat Mater and Exordium.

Thanks...one day later and my back already hurts.

NP: Tiamat - In the Shrines of the Kingly Dead

Definitely not the best death metal album to come out of Sweden, but it's certainly unique. The occult atmosphere mixed with a sense of aggression that gets closer to the early Brazilian bands and Johan's ghoulish vocals make it quite a record.

Still wondering why the hell Efemey kept on burying Koskinen's growls when mixing; Summer's End is the worst offender, but all these songs (and Goddess) worked so much better live, with the full range of vocal expression as envisioned by the singer, not the producer.

Lvmen - Raison D'etre

Pretty great sludgy post hardcore on the more post metal side. Fits the hipstery zeitgeist quite well, and considering the circumstances, a bit ahead of their time.
