New Blind Guardian song. Seems to follow the trend started by last year's "Violent Shadows" of "Blind Guardian decides they want to be heavy again".

I was about to make this thread, you fffffffffffuck!

This song's pretty awesome, and is notable for how similar it sounds to their 90s output.

Nice! Love to see that the speed it back!

After all these years, I still cant decide if I love or loathe Hansi's voice. Strange, that.

bit of wow factor in terms of heaviness, and lack of orchestral/vocal malarkey, but not impressed in terms of hooks and/or songwriting. still it would be interesting if they put out a metal album again after all those years...

Indeed it sounds a lot more like "classic" BG which is definitly a plus. Hansi's vocals also still hold up very well.

For someone who only listens to their first three albums occasionally, this has been pleasant.

This is roughly on-par with Iron Savior's recent output, to my ear. Good, but not earthshattering.

The sound is good, but it lacks the grandiosity i want from BG. It's like they took a Blind Guardian-song template and just filled it in.

Solid if pretty standard for them... love Hansi's voice and Andre's guitar so it's a fun listen. If they hadn't changed so drastically since Imaginations it may sound more rote. I think there were plenty of songs even better than this, which still had this level of heaviness, on Beyond the Red Mirror though - this just has a more stripped down style is all.

I dunno, that chorus is pretty huge and I dig the fuck out of it.

Still need to fire the current producer and bring Flemming out of retirement (? [is he even retired?]).

Agree entirely. This would be ace if it had an off-kilter, aggressive production like their earlier work.

im generally a defender of these types of productions, but i actually agree. Bauerfeind has got BG down to a science and it's honestly made every record of theirs since At the Edge of Time sound exactly the same. it's like he just imports over the drum and guitar settings from record-to-record. that really grounds this in modern BG stylings while i think with a different production would help it be more evocative of old-school BG. it's weird, because Bauerfeind has done records like Saxon's Metalhead and Rage's Soundchaser, which were both really well-produced and unique sounding. he's been phoning it in with BG for a while now, and while I guess it works, the fact that so little has changed does make it a bit boring.

Joost van der Broek* mixed this; y'all can't be saying you can't hear it's head and shoulders superior to Bauerfeind's "trademark" mufflefest.

Songwriting-wise, it's also way more complex and harmonically interesting than their 80s/90s output. I'm probably one of the very few fans who actually appreciates BG's (think Olbrich's) development, diversity and overall sonic journey through the years, so, well... they've always been as heavy, but with fewer dissonant elements and, ANATO onwards, more keyboards than in this track.

TL;DR: BG wouldn't have recorded this song, had it not been for the last (glorious) twenty years.

It's my hill and I'm very much dying on it.

* I might've misspelled his name again; sorry I don't speak Dutch at.all.

Yeah, this sounds considerably punchier to me than the stretch from At the Edge of Time to the 2017 live album, if still on the cleaner side compared to the Trappe and Rasmussen material.
At any rate I'm on the hype train, but then I'm always on the BG hype train. Very much looking forward to the new album.

This is possibly the best song I've heard out of Guardian since the 90s. I didn't necessarily mind the changes that occurred on A Night At The Opera, but I did miss the punchier sound that introduced me to them years back.

Oh my god I like it. Their newer material is so forgettable. I sour over it more and more every year while I thought it was okay at first. Early Blind Guardian is forever where it's at.

It's good to hear the bards are still at it and injecting a little of their older sound.
Hansi has always had a throaty Lawless-esque quality to his voice.

I love everything they've done (excluding the orchestral album) and I really dig this as well. Not everything flows a 100 % but the chorus delivers (from evil)

Does anyone hear the similarities to Another Stranger Me in this track? Good song regardless.

another thing is Ehmke. he's a fantastic drummer, but he's a power metal drummer all the way, yaknow? one thing i always liked about Thomen Stauch was that he felt like a thrash drummer in a power metal band, and that gave them a unique aggression few other power metal bands had. on this and Violent Shadows Ehmke seems to be expanding his repertoire a bit and adding in that thrashiness, but he's still firmly in the power metal mindset.

This is exactly where I’m at. I miss the speed/thrash drumming elements, but I do really like this track, more excited for BG material than I’ve been in like 20 years.

Blind Guardian are my all-time favourite metal band, and this is doing nothing for me.

I hate to be that guy, but it's a variation of stuff we were hearing ten years ago, only Hansi's voice has lost its power and Andre's leads are no longer singing.

I mean, it was fast. Other than that nothing about it stood out. And I love BG.

The production and choruses firmly root this in the modern BG sound to me. As someone else said, it sounds a bit like the Another Stranger Me template but with a pinch more aggressive drumming/riffing. Even if this song is heavier than their later average, the atmosphere feels bland and sounds perfectly in line with their modern style. If not for Violent Shadows, I'd predict this was an eventual new record's equivalent to A Voice in the Dark/Twilight of the Gods. But perhaps they're going for a heavier album now. I just wish they'd revisit the older productions as well.

Hansi's voice is awesome, but I've been unable to really get into these guys. This sounds decent, so I'll check out whatever they have in store.

I mean they have 10 albums of varying styles. If you're not finding what you like in there's little chance a new album will do anything for you.

Hmm, cool to come back and read this because I did listen to everything from At The Edge Of Time (to now) this weekend and it was as bland as I remembered it.

This new song is still pretty cool and the best thing they've done in a long time. I don't entirely enjoy this production but I like it better than that last Helloween album for example.

Both bands have had the same producer for more than a decade now (Charlie Bauerfiend), and he has ruined both bands for me.

Man, I love BG, but listening to this just makes me want to spin Somewhere Far Beyond or Imaginations instead. Even the more frantic cuts from At the Edge of Time (Ride Into Obsession smokes) had a lot more bite then this.

Yeah this isn't bad, but it's a little underwhelming. I've never been that big into these guys, so I'm probably not the best person to evaluate.

Huh. Guess I just enjoy BG's playing more then...

It's a step in the right direction, more like. I've been underwhelmed by their last album and that orchestral thing, I didn't bother with.
