What's the etymology behind the "pizza" part of the name anyways?

I wasn't alive back then but it probably has something to do with the popular conception of the average fan of the type of bands we're talking about being some sort of flipped up baseball cap wearing skater type hanging around pizza parlors.

Way back in the 1980s, I actually knew plenty of thrash dudes like what you describe, who did, in fact hang out at pizza parlors and bowling alleys.

The "Whiplash" analogy described above by thrashinbatman is exactly the same problem I have with a lot of those bands. Nothing wrong with songs about the joys of moshing, thrashing and friendly violent fun- unless it's all you can come up with, and do it with riffs that are but a pale imitation of the originals.

When this got rolling there were a lot of bands that got costume-y with it- high tops, old tour shirts, metal aesthetic we haven't seen in years. Then there were people that took that and put an ironic spin on it. Since they were making shit-kicking head banging music for goons, they put it through the lens of self-aware over-the-top-ness and came out with beer, pizza, fast food in general. So many bands went with the food thing. I've forgotten more food-based silly thrash metal bands than I could name you, and I could name ten off the top of my head. For these guys it always felt like the gimmick came first, and I think that's why people hate them. I know that's why they irritated me. The riffs never felt crafted.

In time "pizza" came to just mean any band that focused on moshy speed and bangable stomp sections. Exodus and Anthrax would easily be considered pizza by today's standards. It's a slur people use when they're posturing as the guy that's too cool to enjoy something just because it's fun, because we all know how enviable those people are.

I think the OP is trying to capture all the new post-2000 thrash bands. Not just the happy ones. Right ????

I get it, there are thrash bands that are indeed more 'partymood'; Municipal Waste/Bonded By Blood/GamaBomb/...

And then put em up against Havok/Warbringer/Demiricous/Dew-scented... Different vibes for sure. Not too mention the 'divergents: Vektor/Skeletonwitch/Revocation/SSS/Trivium's The Crusade album/Legion Of The Damned/...

Not all post-2000 thrash bands sound the same, yet people have the urge to all throw 'em all in the same bin. I get why you wanna do that, but techically that's not really respective towards all these bands.

Post-2000/post-millennial thrash metal, the great thrash resurgence of the mid/late 00's, retro thrash, the great thrash revival, the new wave of (old school) thrash metal

I think those are little bit more fitting terms.... But to each his own....

If you use discogs as a tool, then you can kinda get a timeline of the notable releases from the 'thrash-resurgence' after the millennium.

(quickly removing that pesky legwork for yall, but i can't guarantee no mistakes...)

2005:
Municipal waste - hazardous mutation
toxic holocaust - hell on earth
Suicide watch - global warnng
Avenger of blood-complete annihilation
Gama bomb - survival ofthe fastest
Insane - wait and pray
Ritual Carnage -I infidel
Rumpelstiltskin grinder -buried in the frontyard
Hyades - abuse your illusions
Dew-scented- issueIV
Legion of the damned - malevolent rapture

Deathchain - Deaththrash assault

2006
SSS-St
trivium-thecrusade
Merciless Death - -evil in the night
fueled by fire - spread the fire
Decadence -3rd stage of decay
Warbringer - one by one the wicked fall
Demiricous-one
Send more paramedics - the awakening
Meltdown-demolition
Cross examination-hung jury
Thesyre - exist
Skeletonwitch- worship the witch

2007 (this is where it became clear that there was a thrash resurgence)
Municipal waste - art of partying
Skeletonwitch -beyond the permafrost
Evile - enter the grave
Violator - chemical assault
Bonded by blood -extinguish the weak
hyades - and the worst is yet to come
Gama bomb -zombi brew
Lich king - necromantic maelstrom
bloodtsunami - thrashmetal
Legion of the damned - sons of the jackal
Victimizer - final assault
Nocturnalgraves - satanscross
Dekapitator - storm before the calm
Dew-scented - incinerate
Demiricous-two
Sanctity - road to bloodshed

2008 (thrash resurgence confirmed)
Toxik holocaust-overdose of death
Gama bomb - citizen brain
bondedbyblood - feed the beast
warbringer - war without end
Avenger of blood - deathbrigade
lich king- toxic zombie onslaught
enforcer - into the night
ramming speed - brain wreck
Sss - dividing line
Deal with it - end time prophecies
Merciless death - realm of terror
Guillotine- blood money
Hexen - state of emergency
crossexamination - menace II sobriety
hatchet - awaiting evil
Assaulter - salvation like destruction
Exmortus - in hatreds flame
Eliminator - breaking the wheel
Trenchfoot - turn on tune in drop out
In malice’s wake - eternal nightfall
Vindicator - there will be blood
Austrian death machine - total brutal
Black breath - razor to oblivion
Trench Hell- Southen cross ripper
Legion of the damned - cult of the dead
Sylosis- concusion of an age
Revocation-Empire of the obscene
Deathhammer-forever ripping fast
Diehard - evil always returns

-Something like this I guess... You can make up your own conclusions about which one are normal pizza and which ones are with pineapple, and which ones are glutenfree, etc ... :)

Something I just noticed... Did anyone see that Crisix facebook post with the teaser for their new single/music video ? It seemed to create quite a fuzz online, and now I get why...
Okay, I guess this music video can count as a defined statement...The new Crisix single features 'a couple' of known retro thrash faces/voices... :) Wow, weirdly coincidental that this thread kinda appeared at the same moment... Does 2022 maybe mean something ?? 15 years of thrash revival since the apex retro thrash heydays of 2007 maybe ? :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Yeah, that ruled. That intro scream is the best Tom Araya impression I've ever heard.

I believe it came from Sonic Pulse using it to refer to Lich King and other goofy, lighthearted modern thrash acts. They used it in a positive manner, but it quickly caught on as a derisive label instead.

I love Municipal Waste. Apart from that, I think most "pizza thrash" is mediocre and while the riffs are fun, nothing is substantial or memorable and the same generic themes do get annoying. Sometimes though, I feel like the term "pizza thrash" is overused. I feel like bands such as Lich King and (pre-core) Ultra-Violence get called pizza thrash because they're modern thrash metal, when really I think it's more specifically bands such as Pizza Face, Thrashwall, Car Door Dick Smash, Thrash or Die that have usually mediocre music with thin, cheap production, linear songwriting and a juvenile attitude. Don't get me wrong, I feel like humour is needed in metal since it's not a very serious genre and a lot of bands do it well, but the music needs to be up to par too.

Thank you for reminding me that Ultra-Violence went -core. Privilege to Overcome will always be a banger!
