Fates Warning - The Destination Onward

Sounds better than I remember actually. Subdued in a way, but pretty powerful, obviously pro. Nice rhythmic, dexterous guitar playing and Alder sounds cool.

edit... this is actually pretty awesome.

Nuclear Death - A Symphony of Agony

The new tape box set really brought these rougher recordings to life in a way that makes them sounds almost new. These songs sound great in their raw form here.

Metallica - Low Man's Lyric

Certainly better than Mama Said. Never liked that one that much.

This really is such a killer album. Glad I got into it.

Fates Warning - The Light and Shade of Things

This song is really good... indicative of true mastery of songwriting, like many classic bands have. Great dynamics and build up, a killer chorus/climax.

Scorpions - Lovedrive
Scorpions - Animal Magnetism
Scorpions - Blackout
Scorpions - Love at First Sting

I'm not really a "fan" but, now and then, those four are just what the doctor ordered, and you don't need to be a fan to acknowledge that "Lovedrive" is a fantastic album: eight tracks, eight different styles, each track a classic, simple, yet full of ideas and right on the money. It's their "A Night at the Opera". The others are their "A Day at the Races", "News of the World" and "Jazz", if you get my drift.

Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry

I'd heard this before but never really given it a detailed listen. This is pretty much exactly an argument for why prog metal can be so great. Crisp and complex and a pleasure.

Skullview - Hand of Zeus

Wouldn't say that I love it, but I can see why this would appeal to people. Besides, how many USPM bands were rocking this hard in 1999?!

Yeah, this is one of those "good albums that I forget exists" cases. It's caught between the peaks of the Arch era and the Alder Era (Parallels, for me) and it feels very transitional, but I always enjoy it quite a bit when I go back to it.

Bolt Thrower - For Victory

At first I thought this was an inferior chapter in their discography, but it's grown on me a lot. Feels so different from The IVth Crusade in terms of songwriting philosophy and the images it conjures up that it's hard to believe they were released back to back.

Great album; it was definitely an eye (or should I say ear?) opener hearing that in my teens.

NP: Attacker - Sins of Man

Very interesting modern USPM with plenty of labyrintine guitars and high-spirited vocals. You'll probably like this, Empyreal; it's not far off Helstar's Vampiro; albeit it features better vocals.

Propagandhi - Cut Into the Earth

Some of the best musicians in the punk genre, probably.

I think Perfect Symmetry is about as good as Parallels really, a bit more traditionally proggy as opposed to the glossy, more streamlined Parallels - they make for a good duo really.

Fates Warning - Leave the Past Behind

This is an incredibly likable work.

Vultures Vengeance - A Great Spark from the Dark

Heavy/power metal perfection right here; vocals wailing into the unknown depths, mesmerizing leads that are a thing of beauty and a never-ending set of riffs.

Satan - Earth Infernal

Slowly crawling out of my period of musical burnout. I still have 30 new CDs that I bought this month that I haven't played yet. Probably should fix that.

Deathspell Omega - Our Life is Your Death

This is the only song that appeals to me from the album, I think it's damn good for what it is. Catchy as hell with that little verse melody.

Took a massive break from metal (and social media!) so I could get clean and sober, it was a wise decision. But this album was a disappointing way to return it has to be said

Eldritch - Headquake

Pretty crazy riffs and a real different sort of singer for sure. Interesting stuff.

I would say No Exit is the transitional album. Perfect Symmetry is very much the arrival of the true Alder Fates Warning. New logo, new drummer. No Exit still had some Awaken the Guardian in the guitars.

Harmonium - L’Heptade

One of the only Québécois band that is worth listening to. Some of the most poetic lyrics I’ve heard in years. That song ''Comme un sage'' could go on forever as far as I’m concerned.

Pretty Maids - Future World

Their breakthrough, best and only great album. It's a mystery why they never reached that level again. Ronnie Atkins's two different voices / vocal styles were in perfect balance here.

Fates Warning - In a Word

This one I'd never really listened to at all I don't think. Sounds cool - nice sophisticated late 80s metal which is often a favorite style of mine. Very Queensryche/Crimson Glory vibes. I remember for years I never bothered with the post-Arch records. Glad I rectified that.

Morbific - Ominous Seep of Putridity (2021)

I can't believe I've slept on this! Last year these lads from Finland released the best death metal debut I've heard in ages. This knocked my friggin socks off. Keep an eye and ear on this band in the future! Full of confidence, swagger and ... the riffs!!!

Hour of 13 - Possession

This band sounds like it came from the '80s or '90s with their classic style of traditional heavy metal/doom metal. But they're actually from within this millennium and they're keeping the dark flames of doom strong.

Bad Religion - Fuck Armageddon... This Is Hell

Their debut isn't my favorite album by them (that'd be "Suffer"), but it's a damn good start to their career, that's for sure.

My Dying Bride - Your River

That initial section is just crawling with killer riff after killer riff and the growls at the end just wretched and perfect.

Angel Dust - Into the Dark Past

I definitely underrated this earlier; fits right in between Endless Pain and Walls of Jericho. Hard-edged but also melodic.

Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm

Highly underrated record, even by Hawkwind standards. Makes for a smooth and trippy morning, what more could I ask for?

Fates Warning - The Strand

Lightweight prog metal, but I have a soft (heh) spot for this album either way. Ray Alder sounds a bit more venomous than I expected him to and the guitarists fire off some clinical riffs that result into a safer variant of Perfect Symmetry.

Kreator- Hate Uber Allies

This is really plain. I get it "Kreator doing the same shit" but at least Gods of Violence was a bit better than MEH.

Skinflint - Nyemba

Pretty decent Iron Maiden-esque African metal.

Eldritch - The Quest(ion)

Big riffs, busy complexity, these crazy, unhinged sort of vocals. This guy just belts it out like a classic Jon Oliva sort of singer. It's all just on all the time with this and I dig it.

Celtic Frost - The Heart Beneath

Heavy and riff-y with female backing vocals to boot, this track almost harkens back to their more experimental 'Into the Pandemonium' days. Alas, after the atrocious descent into glam in 'Cold Lake', there was no saving Celtic Frost's career at that point.

Skinflint - Adze

This is even better. Loving the nods to Darkthrone and Celtic Frost in the riffing and the gruffer vocal tone which was also on some of the darker cuts on Nyemba.
