Decapitated - Iconoclast

I am no fan of Rob Flynn but this cut rips. That riff kicks in and its neck snapping time.

Victorius - Victorious Dinogods

Ahhhh...more cheese. Delicious, delicious cheese. It's been a long time since a song has plastered a big, dumb grin on my face like this.

EDIT: THE SOLO INCLUDES THE JURASSIC PARK MELODY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Spinning the whole Immolation - Close to a World Below album.

On Father, Your Not a Father.

I can't even lock into anything to really headbang too. So disjointed. I've had this for 20 years and never really got into it. Still not looking promising.

Drummer is talented no doubt.

1914 - Where Fear & Weapons Meet
Solid stuff. Most, if not all, of the war-themed bands I'm aware of are quite good. Hail Of Bullets, God Dethroned, 1914, Bolt Thrower, the recent output by Asphyx....all killer.

Kreator - Live In East Berlin 1990
Scorching live set recorded during the height of their powers...they were razor sharp during this era.

So what, what do you care? The only thing that matters is that the album rules.

Dragonlord - The Curse of Woe

Who would have had it on their bingo card that Testament's guitarist would get really, really into black metal and make an actually pretty good Dimmu-style symphoblack album?

Type O Negative - We Hate Everyone

Listening to Bloody Kisses for the first time in a while, and it just gets better and better the more I listen to it. Really need to review their albums soon enough.

Witherscape - The Wedlock Observation

One of Dan Swano's finest songs.

Jack White - Fear of the Dawn
Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
King's X - Dogman
The Chasm - Scars of a Lost Reflective Shadow
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
Black Majesty - Silent Company

Playlist for today... never tried King's X but these two albums spoke to me.

Prepare to be blown away. They're a great band who I didn't "get" when I first saw them on MTV in the late 80s. No chance that younger version of me would/could branch out beyond the thrash and trad metal that dominated that era for me. I only truly 'discovered' them around 2005 or 2006.

If you like these, your next steps should be the '92 self-titled album and "Faith Hope Love" and "Tapehead".
This particular song has immense crossover appeal....should have/could have been a number 1 hit.

NP: Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death.
Hard to believe this is nearly 20 years old. Where does time go?! anyway, I still get blown away by "Face In the Sand", which has got to be one of their deepest 'deep cuts'. Just a massive song to my ears.

Dance of Death is like a weird redheaded stepchild of their latter-day albums - they wrote shorter songs and tried some weird stuff on that one, just more rockish and laid back at times. Not a lot of true 5 star songs but it's got a charm. "Paschendale" and the title track I really like...

And yeah I'll get to the King's X shortly. It might seem weird to skip 2 albums in the middle of those two I grabbed, but those were just the ones that seemed to speak to me.

The Chasm - A Chronicle from the Parallel World

This band is just so unfussy and unpretentious really, just chugging out their own inimical brand with no bullshit about it, never changing but always compelling.

King's X - Over My Head

Definitely killer stuff, sort of like Queensryche-esque riffs combined with the kind of swaggering, hazy rock that AIC would do a few years later. Very cool. I am sure I'll find a lot to like with this band.

These vocal harmonies with the slamming riffs, just fucking exquisite.

King's X - Shoes

OK, this one I knew I'd dig. Just gut punch heaviness and some great gritty but still dextrous vocals. A sweet spot of sorts.

Deathevokation - The Chalice of Ages

Used to dislike this, but now I've realised that it's actually pretty good stuff. Epic, without being pretentious and melodic while avoiding the Gothenburg-esque silliness.

Black Sabbath - Megalomania

The modern term is Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but that's not a great song title.

I've had the misfortune of dealing with someone like this. It's unpleasant, to say the least. I might have been manipulated by them if not for my superior intellect, wit, talent, and attractiveness.

Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire

The most popular album on that heavy metal youtube channel. It's good! I can see why people like this, although I feel like I'm missing out on some context because the band plays a style that I'm just not familiar with. The songwriting is satisfying, though I'm not blown away by the performances themselves; riffs vary in quality, drums have a decidedly old-school sound but they don't do much of note, etc. The vocalist has a nice presence that definitely stands out, he seems passionate.

Khemmis - Hunted

I’ll say this: They’re very competent musicians and have riffs aplenty however those vocals are so lame and boring so much so that I feel like crying.

Yngwie - Black Star

Great composition, great delivery. Some of his songs might get tiresome because you-know-why, but not this one.

Hypnosia - Circle Of The Flesh

Picked up the 2021 remaster of Extreme Hatred last week and well pleased with it.The title track kicks it all off but for me this is where the quality of the album starts to reveal itself on song 2.
180g wax, lyric insert, poster and a poly lined inner sleeve to ice the thrash cake.Nice one petrichor records.

Scum - Final Vision

Not bad for a melodic death metal album; cool crunchy guitars, doom-segments and beasty vocals.

Modern masterpiece. Probably unpopular opinion here but that's my feeling. Maybe the greatest guitar solo in this century ?

I'm sure it's unpopular, but I tend to agree. Alter Bridge (and Tremonti's solo stuff) contains a healthy mix of metal within the radio rock, they're more heavy than not. very solid stuff.

King's X - Dogman

This really seems like almost a perfect example of what I like in this kinda heavy rock. It's sludgy and grungy in a way but the vocals add a kind of svelte smooth contrast which is very cool. This and New Model Army are about it.

Got to single out "Sunshine Rain" as a really fucking exquisite piece. Just sublime.

Watain - The Agony and Ecstasy of Watain

Wow! What a return to form. Easily their best since Lawless Darkness. Vicious, majestic, savage and epic, it's got it all. Definitely a top tenner for me this year.

Al-Namrood - Wala'at

We need more bands that play this kind of black metal. (I’m talking about bands that are actually from the Middle-East not bands from Colorado).

There's black metal coming out of Colorado? I mean, I guess they do have mountains etc.

Legend - Fröm the Fjörds

Epic heavy and prog fused together in a tasty way. I can imagine that this opened some doors to those that came into the arena a few years later. At least the epic feel and lyrics are there.

Malthusian - Dissolution of Consciousness

It's great that Malthusian is still active, and the split with Suffering Hour is really great. Love how this song immediately lurches into a pair of ominous riffs.
