For me, every day is a Blind Guardian day.

NP: Lost Horizon - Sworn in the Metal Wind

Umm, why is A Flame to the Ground Beneath seen as the better album again? Sure, AFttGB has some moments that in isolation outdo Awakening the World (the main lick of Pure, the pre-chorus and chorus of Cry of a Restless Soul, the last minute of Highlander etc), but AtW is so much more energetic and visceral overall, with no dull and dragging moments.

Blind Guardian - 'Imaginations From the Other Side' & 'At the Edge Of Time'
I have a love/hate relationship with Hansi's voice. More often than not, it's a bitter pill to swallow, but when he's doing the multi-layered/tracked 'harmony' vocals, it works incredibly well.

Easily their best one!

NP: Goatlord - Blood Monk

Sluggish, riff-driven madness; like a mix between early Celtic Frost and early Sodom mixed with venomous vocals.

Motorhead - Bomber (Live at Bristow, VA)

The one time I got to see Motorhead before Lemmy's passing. It was an honor to see the legend himself in action, even if it was at Mayhem Festival of all places

Ze bombah!!

Hm, that's a curious take. I often hear people say that the multilayered choirs are irritating and that the rest is fine, never vice versa. Other than perhaps his funny German accent, I don't see what might bother you about him.

NP: Protector - A Shedding of Skin

Solid German deaththrash right here. Their previous two albums left me cold, but this is quite impressive.

Soulburn - Noa's D'ark

Death/doom/black alloy. I like this echoing soundscape which is used at times. First time going through the album, but it definitely does have some cool moments. I sense some Primordial vibes here and there. More rounds will happen...

Manilla Road - Whitechapel

Cool song from Out of the Abyss. A thrashier number. They mastered these kind of songs too.

I'm tempted to play all my fucking MR albums in the next coming days.

Warkvlt - Immortal Rage of the Warkvlt

Some actually good war metal that avoids the "three note riff" mentality of Conqueror / Revenge / etc. Honestly, aside from Von Goat, Black Witchery and Warkvlt, there isn't much war metal I like.

Doom Snake Cult - Love

Not as vicious as Goatlord, but there's more emphasis on groove 'n doom here. I dig it.

This band deserves all the praise they're getting. Grand, unsettling stuff.

Chastain - The Voice of the Cult
Queensryche - s/t EP
Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance

Digging into some classic shit. Big riffs and attitudes. I liked Battle Beast's first album and Chastain later made me realize where BB got it from.

These are all kinds of awesome, especially the QR.

NP: Maiden - Live At Donnington 1992
Far from the best sounding Maiden live release, but this is still pretty enjoyable. "Be Quick" is such a barnstormer....never get tired of that song. Bruce is far from his best here, but the warts lend this a degree of authenticity that brings it up a notch.

"The Lady Wore Black" is such a great tune, sort of an embryo version of "Eyes of a Stranger." Tate was so great and the band sounds tight and just on point. There's just a kind of chemistry to it all.

Manilla Road - Feeling Free Again

Might be the worst song on the album, but it's still not BAD. Brings some good contrast to the album otherwise full of magical tales.

Musically, it's as good as the rest of the album. It's just weird hearing Mark say stuff like "Hey baby" and "Now I'm in love with you", and the chorus is kinda bland.

NP: Protector - Mental Malaria

Brutal with a capital B. Up there with Morbid Saint and Demolition Hammer.

"Feeling Free Again" is like their "Can I Play with Madness," it's not bad but just more simple than a lot of fans want. More upbeat and bouncy too.

King's X - Out of the Silent Planet

Doug Pinnick's vocals on a lot of their other stuff are so good that it's almost jarring to hear Ty sing on this, a very odd intro to this album.

last few plays:

Maiden - Live At the Palais Omnisport, Paris, 29 Nov. '86
Maiden - Live At the Beat Club, Bremen, Germany, 29 Apr. '81
Maiden - Live At Le Zenith, Paris, 30 Oct. '90

Three of the best Maiden boots I own. The '86 show is considered the best of all the SIT boots, as it's from a soundboard. Stunning performance with Bruce sounding 20x better than he does on LAD. "Caught Somewhere In Time" kills it here.

The '81 show was a professionally recorded gig which, if I recall correctly, was supposed to be televised, but wash shelved due to technical issues. The sound literally cuts out on a few songs prompting the band to restart songs. Otherwise, the quality is amazing and Di'Anno kills it here.

The '90 boot is among the best sounding from the No Prayer Tour. While it's a crowd recording, the sound is high quality. The NPFTD tunes seem faster/heavier/more energetic here than on the album. Not the greatest setlist but very enjoyable gig.

Film of the '86 gig:

Fates Warning - Anarchy Divine

It's funny because in some ways this album is a bit of a step back in terms of songwriting from the predecessor, less ornate and majestic sounding, but it does show the band totally reforming itself and realigning its priorities in every way.

Spot-on assessment. I was shocked and floored when I bought it, and first listened, back in '88. I had no idea John Arch was out of the band, so to hear anyone else on vocals was a maddening disappointment. And the magic of "Guardian" was something I wanted more of....alas, 'twas not to be.

With that said, it's a great album in its own right and it saw them going from strength to strength. The Alder-lead version of FW has been awesome.

Agalloch's The Mantle turned 20 years old a few days ago.

When I was younger, I was really awestruck by songs like Carouselambra by Led Zeppelin, and Tool were one of my favourite bands as I grew up - so I was no stranger to dynamic and expansive songwriting.

But it was The Mantle that truly opened my eyes as to just what is possible with music, and art as a whole. The freedom you have as a creator. We always hear that you can do whatever you want with a blank canvas, but often times when we put pen to paper - or our hands to a guitar - we still feel like there are certain guidelines we must adhere to, for whatever unknown reason or conviction - especially in the beginning. It usually takes a very special piece of music to make us realize that yes, you can really do ANYTHING you want - even hit a fucking deer skull if it has the right *clack* to it, captures the right vibe, and sends the right message.

For me, The Mantle was that record, and it took 3 listens to wrap my head around just what it was, this grand panorama before me. It is the true benchmark. It is the pinnacle of true magic and grandeur that I strive to achieve as an artist - whether I have ever or will ever reach it, is another story.

I don't think I'll ever truly articulate what this record means to me, and the emotions I feel every time I listen to it. "They lie outside the boundaries that words can address, and man can only grasp those thoughts which language can express." Agalloch's The Mantle truly is timeless, and is my favourite piece of art ever created by human beings. Inspired by many, and has inspired many, but never replicated. Not before, not since, not ever.

Happy birthday.

Albums I have listened to tonight:

Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
Blut Aus Nord - Ultima Thulée

NP: Cathedral’s The Ethereal Mirror and while it’s still a very good album there is just too much emphasis on the Stoner genre. Still a fun record though if bands like Kyuss don’t piss you off.

So this is about the Predator movie? Cool. Chorus is one of their best.

Lacuna Coil - Purify

Far and away their best song. The fact that they strayed so far from this sound will forever sadden me.

It's pretty wild how much they changed, but I like a band with this kind of vision.

Kendrick Lamar - United in Grief

One of the most intriguing albums of the year, pretty thorny, weighty stuff and I appreciate the audacity of it all.

King Diamond - Abigail II, the Revenge
Not his best album by any stretch of the imagination, but there's always something great to be found on anything he's associated with.
And, as always, the guitar work is splendid.

Pentacrostic - The Resting of the Mist on the Cold Lake

Hard to believe that this came out in 1990. First song captures that dark introspection of The Chasm's Procreation of the Inner Temple and this one sounds rather close to My Dying Bride's As the Flower Withers.
