Saint Vitus - Heavier Than Thou.

Not the biggest fan of best of collections but this is a fun one.

Altars - Ascetic Reflection

The dissonant side of death metal has been spawning some great work in recent years, and this is no exception.

Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll

Not exactly my favorite COB album, but still has some fantastic tracks nonetheless.

Black Sabbath - Sabotage

I go through moods where I like all of their early records the best, but this one probably is my main favorite. Wonderfully out there, forward thinking heavy music. A freak chimera of a bunch of different things. "Megalomania" especially is such an opus - rich and crazy and varied. It's kinda lopsided as an album and "Supertzar" isn't that great, but I like how the whole of it comes together anyway.

As much as I love the earlier albums, this really IS their best!

Cauldron Born - Cold Steel For The Necromancer

Just got my copy in the mail today and it's fuckin awesome. The riffs, the solos, the vocals, the songs! Howies done it again, USPM at it's finest!

King's X - Fool You

This band just has that melodic sense that's so timeless - despite the heaviness they have a sense of melody that is slick and based more in older styles of pop and rock, which anchors things and makes it sound different. Just addictive.

Queensryche - En Force

Man, this slick, driving sound was so influential - probably pretty close to the influence Maiden and Priest had. Lots of later bands took a lot from this. They really had no gimmick and just played really intricate, solid shit all around, just super catchy and powerful songs.

Acid Witch - Witchfynder Finder

Seeing these guys at a fest in a few weeks and getting familiar with their stuff. Nice death doom.

Theatre of Tragedy - A Rose For the Dead

This may very well be my favorite doom metal song of all time. And, aside from the stray occasional radio play of "War Pigs," it was also my first.

Utvar - Centar Oluje

Serbian black metal/shoegaze. This record, “Matr, is leaps and bounds better than the first record. It’s also more shoegaze with black metal mixed in. Two thumbs up!

Twilight Force - Flight of the Sapphire Dragon

People should listen to what they enjoy. Unless its this, then you should be ashamed of yourself. ;)

But seriously, Just not my bag and I like fantasy power metal. Blind Guardian has heft, has balls. This has neither.

Thank god Visigoth came on next....

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time.

I hated Maiden when I first heard them, Somewhere in Time being my first exposure. Oh how this has grown on me, I love this album. I would even say Iron Maiden are one of my favorite bands.

Sabbath - '13'
This was such a lost opportunity. It's not terrible, but it's just plodding, and too long. The excitement that Sabbath always brought wasn't to be found here. (And the production stinks....too distorted.)

Malevolent Creation - Retribution

Solid if pretty average death metal. On a death binge these days. Oh and I’m stoked that the main page is fixed.

Queensryche - I Dream in Infrared

I never really got this when I was young; I wanted it to be more like the rocking metal of both the previous and next albums from the band. Gotta say I dig it now. They were trying a bit of a different, artier thing here. Geoff Tate sounds great.

Judas Priest Painkiller

I alway enjoyed mediocre albums of JP but it’s a mistery the drop of quality of this guys…

Русская Зима - Самосожжение

Epic doom/death metal with plenty of massive Celtic Frost-inspired guitars. The low-fi production isn't great, but I can handle it.

Mayhem - Key To The Storms

Ordo Ad Chao remains a perplexing, unsettling and hard to listen to experience for me and for some reason i keep going back for more. It's as if i have this hopeless ambition to unravel it once and for all but it never happens.

"Rage For Order" was years ahead of its time...progressive in the truest sense of the word.
(And it's yet another masterpiece from the year that spawned many.)

It's funny about the prog tag with them since they don't really sound like prog; they just write really immaculate, careful music and have a shitload of precision and style to it all. There's just something really smooth and refined there. And they weren't afraid to go mellow or poppy.

Queensryche - Rage for Order, Operation Mindcrime

Finally got time on the weekend to sit and concentrate.

In the car... St. Vincent - Masseduction

So damn good - a whole album of straight killer tunes.

Ripped To Shreds - Reek of Burning Freedom

Modern Swedish Death Metal done right, kinda reminds me of Intestine Baalism and the earlier Horrendous albums. I'm sure this will be another sick release from these guys.

Onslaught - Shellshock

Digging out In Search Of Sanity again, had to be done.Really clean and biting production on it and this is a straight up fast riffing badass metal song.Pushes SG's high vocal range to the limit too.

Molchat Doma - Etazhi

Hell yeah. I'm guessing this needs no introduction. Fantastic way to relax after a long day, and it's also just a good excuse to hear the classic Судно for the millionth time. Bonus points if you're feeling especially misanthropic. (I'm not, but it happens to the best of us!)

The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed

The days that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will die should be a worldwide statutory holiday.

A decent comeback album but far away from the best

Death - Spiritual Healing

I don't know why this album isn't more popular within Death's discography. It has always been one of my favourites, finding perfect balance in old school death metal sound and technical approach. Plus it has the mighty James Murphy on it.

Agreed. It doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves.

NP:
Maiden - Live At the Paladium, NYC 1982
Pristine Soundboard (I believe it was a recording for local radio) recording of the band at their hungriest. This is easily the best version of "Phantom" to be found.

One of my fav DS project, the atmosphere is quite unique. Dreamy and mysterious.
