Sinister Cross the Styx
Gorefest Mindloss
Grave Into The Grave

Reviewing some historical album must confess that I find The Rack the worse debut among all

Things change with Last Man on Earth

Played Motorhead - Good 'n' Loud 2xLP before heading out this morning. One of the two live 2xLPs from the 1979 box set.

Sunday / Monday playlist:

Grave - "Out Of Respect For the Dead" & "Endless Procession Of Souls"
Two latter era Grave classics...definitely as good as, if not better than, "Into the Grave".

Autopsy - "Mental Funeral"
Such a unique death metal classic. This seems to grow even stronger with age.

Overkill - "Years Of Decay"
Arguably the greatest thrash record of all time, IMHO. They really tapped into something here.

Metallica - "S&M2"
I know it's fashionable to hate modern Metallica, but this album kills. "The Day That Never Comes" is a modern masterpiece of a song.

Abhoria - Abhoria

Nothing original here when it comes to black metal but just the way this album is produced is killer. Might be listening to it a couple more times just today.

Metallica - Hardwired

There's a lot of good stuff on this. Not as good as the 80s stuff but the people who just complain about them all the time are tiresome. It's quality shit.

I'm of the opinion that Hardwired is their best work since the 80s, better than the Black Album.

Now THAT'S a tasty hook!

Eyehategod - In the Name of Suffering

NOLA isn’t just the birthplace of jazz you know. Sludge before Sludge was even a thing. Fucking christ, this is heavy.

I actually don't know if I've ever finished The Black Album.

Sadist - Tribe

This band has always had the most interesting cover arts and aesthetics, but I'd never heard them before. A few minutes into this and I can see why it was getting praise here. Crazy, off the wall shit. Manic.

Majestica - Ghost of Marley

I still think "A Christmas Carol" is far better than it has any right to be. I'm not fond of Christmas music but this one is just so damn entertaining (if you have a high cheese tolerance at least - there are parts where a full grown Swedish man is the voice of Tiny Tim after all).

Elisa C. Martin - No Fear

I had no idea that she started her own band. It's a bit generic, but Elisa sells it well.

Meteora - Numb

Well...I wasn't expecting this. It's real!

Judicator - The Black Elk

People aren't liking this? I think the whole album's pretty spot-on.

Helloween - The Swing of a Fallen World

Seeing its reviews here on M-A I didn't expect much from this album, but how was I wrong; this album rocks.

Crass - Punk is Dead

Heard all the disparaging comments - a controversial band apparently. There's just something really bloodpumping and fucking cool about it all to me. Abrasive, but upbeat and catchy, just rocks out, zigs and zags its own way...

The Cramps - I Was A Teenage Werewolf

This shit is just super cool, alright? Not much else to say about it. It kinda makes me wanna watch cheesy b-movies on a CRT TV (on VHS of course) in an old RV with a shag carpet.

Yep, The Cramps are super fuckin cool alright.

Sonja - Loud Arriver

Finally checked em out after seeing the name dropped a bit around the place. Interesting mix of styles going on in this musically but whatever goodness there is, is ruined by the rather weak vocals, no x-factor at all to them. Could only listen to 4 songs before I had to turn it off.

Tonight:

Asphyx - The Rack

It is every bit the classic I remember it to be. Pure nasty and badass death metal.

Enslaved - Frost

Just added this one to my physical collection. I really needed it.

I’m about to spin Shining - Klagopsalmer

latest listens:

Overkill - "Feel the Fire Live In Overhausen"
Metallica - "Live In Phoenix, Aug 4 2017"
Both smoke...tons of energy on display here.

Exodus - "Pleasures of the Flesh"
This second Exodus album stands in the shadow of "Bonded" but it's an absolute classic in its own right. "Chemi-Kill" is easily my fav Exodus tune by a wide margin.

The Chasm - The Scars Of A Lost Reflective Shadow

I've been a fan since they released Procession and their music/art speaks to me on some kinda weird spiritual level that I've always found hard to explain. Melodic death metal that sounds a bit like Dismember jammin with Dissection, so in other words, fuckin awesome. Easy 5/5

Metal Church - "Hanging In the Balance"
I was a huge fan of Metal Church until "The Human Factor" which I found dull and uninspired. So I never heard this release back in the day. Years later, the positive reviews prompted me to buy a copy but I dont recall listening more than once or twice.
So I'm hearing this today without much of an opinion. Not bad but not sure the praise is warranted.....but i'm only halfway through.

"End of an Age" may be their best song for me.

Threshold - Silenced

This whole thing has kept being satisfying. Rich yet smooth and poppy, with the right kind of hard edge to accentuate it. Just so good. A delicacy in music. This and the Hammers of Misfortune album have easily jumped into my top 5 this year.

Also...

Hammers of Misfortune - Overtaker
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Helloween - Creatures in Heaven.

This has to be one of the greatest songs Helloween have ever written.

Rush - 2112

As musicians, they can probably do whatever they want. Still they put good songs first - at least on this album. And it doesn't get old fast, always something new to admire. My sorrow is that I don't own anything else by them yet.

Manowar - Into Glory Ride
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Diamond Head - The Coffin Train

Going to some old school stuff today...

Diamond Head's debut is funny to me because technically it doesn't really do anything new like a lot of bands at the time - it's just really, really fucking good writing and playing, and people latched onto it. That counts.

Spun Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm.

You know what you are getting with these guys and I like it. I think they lost something when they lost ZP on vocals though.

Judicator - The High Priestess

I didn't know what to make of it on first listen, but now this might be one of my favorite songs of the year.

Candlemass - Wizard of the Vortex

Good song, though while Johan Längqvist's performance on EDM is by far my favorite vocal performance on a Candlemass album, he has definitely lost a lot over the decades.

Titanic - Full Steam Ahead

It has all the elements to make me dislike it, little compositional ambition and christian metal, but I just love their sound.

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

Finally back on Spotify! This record has a vibe quite unlike most and the sleekness of the musicianship is amazing. Piece of Time is next up.

some old school thrash today:

Sacred Reich - Ignorance
Solid '2nd tier' thrash album. The output that followed this was a bit too cheesy to take seriously, but this one delivers.

Sadus - Swallowed In Black
Damn, that bass!! This was too heavy for me when it was new...but totally dig it today!

Sodom - Agent Orange
Probably my favorite Sodom release. Not a huge fan of Sodom, but they have some real bright spots in their catalog.

Devastation - Idolatry
Not kidding...this is one of the all-time GREATEST thrash albums. The bastard child of "Possessed" and early "Sepultura".

Still like this. Probably because I don't listen to those embarrassing rock radio stations we have here at all.

Lord Belial - Rapture

I listened to it when it came out and thought it was solid but I was expecting something more glorious after the 14 year gap after the last album, but listening to it now again it's really starting to grow on me, the songwriting is incredibly solid and I'm considering it as an option for my top 10 of the year.

Blind Illusion - Wrath Of The Gods

This album has really caught my imagination, it's not perfect, it's different, creative and interesting, but all kept in a metal framework and it demands repeat listenings. The possibilities for the future are endless and hopefully Wrath Of The God's is a sign of truly great things to come. I like it a lot. 4/5

Cloven Hoof - Time Assassin

This album just hasn't really connected with me unfortunately. It's a real mixed bag. Generally I find this one to be too Euro PM in it's styling and production. There's some really good stuff on here but a song like Highwayman is too Iron Maiden like and in a bad way with it's cringey intro and outro (thankfully they keep it short unlike you know who), it nearly ruins the whole bloody thing for me. I loved the last 2 albums, this one may be a grower, time will tell. An unfortunate 3/5.

Crowbar - Zero And Below

These guys always deliver, the miserable bastards never let me down. You could accuse them of being consistent or solid and you'd be right, that's a good thing when it's as great as this. Big doomy as fuck riffs, deep lyrics and emotive but heavy vocals. I really dig this album. 4/5

Nile - Chapter of Obeisance Before Giving Breath to the Inert One in the Presence of the Crescent Shaped Horns

Love this band more than I can explain. My only regret is never catching them with Dallas live, fingers crossed he makes a comeback in the future!
