Excalion - Soulbound

New album is on point with everything they've done, this has to be one of the most consistent fucking bands.

Lord - Final Seconds

Driving, propulsive power from the guitars and drums... just kinetic as fuck. They know how to do it right. The longer songs at the end of the album fuckin smoke - this is a band that gets better the longer their songs get, more room for detail and building power and momentum.

The Smiths - Frankly, Mr. Shankly

Woke up with this song playing in my head. Morrissey lyrics are f-ing brilliant.

Neurosis - Enemy of the Sun

Few bands got an almost perfect discography, especially when it is spanning over 30 years. Never heard their earlier records but I have a feeling that I’m not missing out. Everything from 1992 onward to 2007 just smokes.

Reign of Glory - All Will Bow/ like a modern day Whitesnake.
Bolt Thrower - Warmaster/ this is the first death metal album I ever owned. After Death this is my favorite death metal band.

Killing Joke - Multitudes

Driving force of gothic-y post-punk mania. Good stuff.

Phlebotomized - Immense Intense Suspense

There's a degree of real mathiness and complexity to this, that makes it almost like an ordeal - but it's so well thought out and they never do what you expect. Just stands alone. Very intriguing. Maximalist as fuck, but not overloaded like bad bands these days can be. Careful, patient melodicism and disparate elements that work well. It's studious but very interesting.

Phlebotomized - Achin'

These big, groovy riffs, the mellow sections with quite good clean singing, it's all just so good and so weird. Loving this.

NONE - Life Has Gone On Long Enough

Second album by Portland-based DSBM duo. Perhaps not as emotionally devastating as their third effort "Damp Chill Of Life", but not far behind. My second favourite band after Ulcerate. Cannot wait for the release of their fourth album, Inevitable, later this year. Amazing band.

Profetus-As All Seasons Die

A fairly obscure funeral doom band, they are one of my favorites in the genre and this is my favorite album. The track Dead Are Our Leaves of Autumn is particularly crushing

Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion

That's one hell of a guitar tone, classic stuff indeed!

To Mega Therion is one of the best metal albums ever.

Entombed - Clandestine
Dawn Ray'd - To Know the Light
Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags

Gnarly stuff.

Between Dawn Ray'd and Excalion I think I already have some real strong albums this year, not to mention a handful of others...

So true. A stunning piece of art, really.

NP: Ratt - Dancing Undercover
Every now and then, I get the itch to revisit some of the classic 80s "pop metal". And Ratt was always a step above most of their peers, IMO. The guitar work always won the day for them. DeMartini!!

Conception - Million Gods

Just a ridiculously great song and album. For many this was the band's high point but I think they got even better after this.

Burzum - Key to the Gate

One of my favorite Burzum tracks. I like how it starts out frenetically and then slows down in the middle which leads to an extended guitar solo that slowly crawls its way to the end of the song.

Metallica - One

I can't say anything that hasn't been said about this song. One of Metallica's best. That Kirk Hammett solo is simply astounding.

Iron Maiden - Only the Good Die Young

After almost 23 years as a metal listener, and hundreds upon hundreds of albums checked, SSoaSS still remains the best album ever written.

I like this one better than "Ghost Love Score", a song I also really like mind you.

Amazing album. One of its kind (well, a little bit of a Skepticism-worship band, but that's a good thing!), and one of the best in the genre.

Hellcrash - Demonic Assassination

Italian speed metal reminiscent of Venom that recently came out. Not really my thing tbh

Slayer - World Painted Blood

I grew to like this track because of the Big 4 DVD. I liked the energy in their execution of this song during that live set.

You Called It Resurrection, I Call It Fairytale for Human Parasites, Your Kind! - Dødsferd

I would love it if Dødsferd ever comes back to a Black'n roll kind of sound like in that album.

Better every spin so far, really good band. Rich and vital art.

Testament - "Souls of Black"
Some good songs to be found amongst the filler here...but easily their weakest from the classic era.

Hellripper - Warlorcks Grim & Withered Hags

There's an unusual grace and stylishness to this guitar playing that you don't see in a lot of this kinda music.

Man Must Die - Enabler

How is it possible that this absolute fucking scorcher has been out since the February 17th and it hasn't had a single review yet? My god, it is by far their best work yet. Absolutely fucking killer, this song especially. Also the vocalist is a lovely man!

I've started checking the new release out. Suitably impressed a few tracks in, technically very good and quite varied, and an angry band from Scotland, what's not to like!

This is pretty much just a perfect album for me, everything I really need from this band/sound.
