Scorpions - "Tokyo Tapes"
UFO - "Strangers In the Night"

The golden era of live albums. A shocking number of classic live albums were released in the late 70s.

Great Finnish black metal, some ''happy'' melodies here, love it.

Ruttokieli is a genius

Now listening Satyricon Dark Medieval Times

A sublime album but isn’t an easy listening.

Cryptic Shift - Visitations From Enceladus

One of my favorite death metal albums in the past few years, sounds like a cross between Blood Incantation and Dimension Hatross era Voivod. Really digging bands like this who utilize riffy, old school technicality to create some of the wildest shit I've heard from the genre recently.

Summoning - Khazad Dúm

Finally got Dol Guldur on CD yesterday. My second after Minas Morgul. I wasn't certain about buying it because my impressions of the first two songs on this one when checking them out on YT were like "this is a little bizzarre, I might need to digest them first" but in the end I'm glad because this is a very good song.

Ashenspire - Hostile Architecture
Just clicked on it at random on bandcamp while browsing for new stuff to listen to, and somehow stumbled into something mindblowing and really unique. It reminds me of King Crimson, Devil Doll and the Mayhem album Grand Declaration of War with elements of jazz at moments. It's really experimental, but very cohesive and well put together, with some good deal of theatrical performance in the form of bombastic vocals, mostly clean, with choirs complementing certain parts.

Massacra - Apocalyptic Visions

These French thrash/death riffs are tastier than croissants.

Slayer - Angel of Death (Squidward vocal cover)
Megadeth - Peace Sells (Squidward vocal cover)

This is extremely cursed but also quite impressive. Competent AI generated vocals are becoming a real possibility.

Virgin Steele - Atreus II

Second disc really makes it stand out. The first disc has some great catchy tunes, but then the second one adds a shitload of genuine soul and emotional depth - a real exploration of the sound...

Vomitory - Beg for Death

Fun straight forward meat-and-potatoes death metal, aka what we usually get from these guys.

Decayed - The Conjuration of the Southern Circle

I admit I was absolutely blitzkrieg drunk almost every time I mentioned this band before until now. This is really quite good. Raw fuckin filth. Great classic style solos spice it up. The riffs are like Slayer's Show No Mercy and old Celtic Frost melded together in an alchemical accident. Great.

Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon

Some of the best BM ever laid down. Purity and spirit of the genre.

I've got to revisit that band. I remember liking the first two albums quite a bit.

Also, Blitzkrieg Drunk would make a decent bestial black/death/thrash metal band name!

NP: Possessed - No Will to Live

Got to admit that this sounds rather underwhelming compared to Seven Churches, even if it's decent thrash on its own.

Lucifer's Hammer (Chile)

New wave of the old wave of British heavy metal. Most of the time they're very close to Di'anno's Maiden. The singer is a bit bland but what I like about them is the elements that aren't really metallic. At least one track even bears a passing resemblance to Blue Öyster Cult. "New wave of old" bands usually try to be as metallic as possible, whereas the old bands simply were whatever they were when they were new. (Damn, when I read the preceding sentence backwards, it doesn't get any less confusing.)

Elegant Weapons – Horns for a Halo

Richie Faulkner's start-up for the time after the end of of his main band. Contrary to what anyone expected, there are – surprise – no similarities to Judas Priest. For the most part, this is accessible blues-based heavy rock (MSG, the first Badlands album, late career hair metal Whitesnake ["Good to be Bad"] etc.).

Excellent vocals (Ronnie Romero) and guitars – Faulkner puts his Priest persona to shame; he plays like a big gun from the old world, like Jake E. Lee, Schenker or a young Zakk Wylde, without copying anyone – solid but bland songwriting. It's like Chickenfoot where the musical contributions of its members are so much better than the actual songs and you always wonder: "Why on earth isn't this as good as Van Halen?"

Cynic - Focus

Classic progressive death metal chocked full of technical instrumentation and wild jazz fusion flourishes, still prefer Atheist personally but this album still rules.

Spot-on assessment of Chickenfoot. That band should rule. Alas, they're just 'there'.

Possessed - ...Graven

Obviously an overlong record, but these riffs slay and Jeff sounds in top form. I'll probably take this over Possessed's thrashier 80's outputs.

Children of Bodom - Bodom Beach Terror

Their first four albums are still so incredibly fun. Energetic, catchy and fantastic guitar work. Still missin' ya, Wildchild.

Not a lot of metal in the last few days but...

Edgard Varèse - The Complete Works
Klaus Badelt - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl OST
Prince - Gold Experience
Prince - Emancipation

I'm definitely into orchestral music these days. What is fun with reading interviews with musicians is that you always learn about new bands, artists, composers etc. Varese is right up my alley, two hours and a half of the most delightful and compelling music.

I haven't saw POTC in over ten years but I did remember that the music was phenomenal, the only other movies that had such exquisite soundtracks are The Passion of Christ and Gladiator IMO.

This demo sounds like Dark Angel. Definitely something I prefer over their full length albums.

Iron Maiden - Hell on Earth

Always good.

Last night I listened to the first album of Wishbone Ash. Great stuff if you like hard rock with kind of folky melodies.

Elder - Dead Roots Stirring

It's really good! I find stoner metal to be hit-or-miss a lot of the time, but Elder manage to keep me invested a lot more than most stoner bands. The album is a little bit formulaic but the grooves are rock solid and each song has a magnificent climax that makes the lengthier songwriting worthwhile. A lot of really nice, bluesy solos as well that appeals to my inner 70s rock fan.

Danzig - Danzig II: Lucifuge

A fusion of heavy metal, hard rock, and blues along with Danzig's signature vocals. An absoluter rocker indeed!

Excalion - Once Upon a Time
Sacred Outcry - Towers of Gold

Power metal in fine form. Good stuff.

Pharaoh - Bury the Light

Hadn't read the lyrics in a while. What great stuff:

Unguarded and tame
Broken by the hypnotizing hold
Think you're high from the flames
But you're feverish out in the cold
Your life is cheaply sold
And then when the coal runs out
And the mountains are stripped and bare
Where's your share?

Fucking anti-capitalist rage - righteous.

Really good black metal from ''Blackheart'', the guy that used to play in Drowning the Light.

Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction

Not only is it a much better album than I remembered, but it's amazing how close it sounds to what Blasphemy and Beherit would later do and yet I never read anyone mention the influence Carcass has had on war metal.
