Indeed. Next closest I can think of are Running Wild's first five. If you're not hot on Under Jolly Roger, Bathory's first four applies here.

Yeah, I was also thinking of Bathory when I wrote that post. Metallica's first four are also all very solid. But seven in a row and all in the same decade? That's just untouchable!

Oh yeah, Metallica dominated the 80s too. Justice was so far ahead of its time, I forgot it came out in the 80s. Much of Justice is some damn good material, with maybe a few songs that don't quite hit that mark. Something I get with Anthems at the Welkin of Dusk, except Emperor definitely got pretty self-indulgent to a fault on that album while Metallica didn't.

Oh fuck, yeah, their run from Open the Gates until Out of the Abyss is pretty slick too.

I do have a question, why do people put down only 1 album per band? It's the best album of the decade, not best album by band. I understand not wanting to have your top 10 filled with only 4 or 5 bands but it seems unfair on bands who released 3 or 4 great albums as they will suffer from vote splitting should everyone do this, compared to a band who may have only released 1 great album and the rest all mediocre

1) Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
2) Sepultura - Beneath the Ramains
3) Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
4) Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
5) Obituary - Slowly we Rot
6) Venom - Black Metal
7) Dio - Dream Evil
8) Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
9) Iron maiden - Killers
10) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

There you go, I really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for this one.

Making this list made me realize that most of the stuff I like from the 80's doesn't fit into the "metal world" and that a lot of music i thought would qualify was released in the late 70's instead.

Yes, often for people there are so many great/interesting/favorite albums to choose from, and people do these kinds of 'limitations' to make the process of compiling of their top-10 list a little easier and also in order to have a bit more of their favorite bands represented on the list, I think.

I voted for 2 Bathory albums ("Under the Sign of the Black Mark" and "Blood Fire Death" ) but only because they are quite different in styles/atmosphere for me.

I don't necessarly agree with the idea of choosing to restrict oneself to picking just one album per band, for the reasons you stated, but again this process of making a top 10 is very personnal and quite arbitrary in many ways. So while some people don't actively try choose not to not include many albums by the same band, they probably tend to avoid putting the same band too many times. Like I really doubt that many will actually have all seven Iron Maiden albums on their ballot, or even 6 or 5. People also do that to make the process of choosing 10 records easier for themselves, and they might feel like they've at least given love to more bands that they appreciate. Choosing just one album per band is also a way for some to ensure that there is diversity in the music they picked.

But yeah, I don't play by that rule, and my 90's top 10 had two Bolt Thrower albums, and my 80's top 10 will most likely have two Death albums.

I'd say everything from the debut onwards even - really good.

Okay I think I've got 9 out of 10 locked in. But now damn is it hard to decide who gets the coveted last spot. Time to spin some more classics. I expect to pump out a huge list of honorable mentions too, if anything just to put some amazing albums in the spotlight as well.

Only one album per band:

01 Fates Warning – Awaken the Guardian
02 Savatage – Hall of the Mountain King
03 Queensrÿche – Rage for Order
04 Iron Maiden – Somewhere in Time
05 Black Sabbath – Headless Cross
06 Celtic Frost – Into the Pandemonium
07 Voivod – Nothingface
08 Slayer – Reign in Blood
09 Metallica – Master of Puppets
10 Judas Priest – British Steel

I'll probably regret the order ("Pandemonium" <-> "Nothingface"?) and the exclusions ("Transcendence", "Melissa", "Fatal Portrait" or "Abigail", "Blood Fire Death", "Ancient Dreams" etc.) pretty soon. Also, "Headless Cross" is far less important, innovative or influential than the others but, atmospherically, it's such an immersive experience that it resembles your favourite dive bar that you prefer to most five star hotels.

1. Queensrÿche - Operation: Mindcrime
2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Slayer - Reign in Blood
4. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
5. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
6. Razor - Evil Invaders
7. Metallica - ...And Justice for All
8. Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare
9. Scanner - Terminal Earth
10. Exodus - Bonded By Blood

The Scanner album was always 1990 in my mind, but is 1989 according to m-a. The one exception to how pretty damn basic my list is otherwise!

Iron Maiden is my favorite band ever, but as far as whole albums go they're not quite up there with the best of the best. SIT's many high points and Adrian Smith's lead guitar work does put that particular one over the top for me though.

additional comments:
Spoiler: show
* Even though it was hard as fuck, I also went with the one album per band self-enforced rule.
* On the Savatage pick: My gut first went to Gutter Ballet, but I found it to be a bit inconsistent. I really don't like the Instrumental > Ballad > Instrumental set up right at the start of the album. Temptation could very well be shorter and be the actual intro to Where the Crowds are Gone. Silk and Steel, while cool, is just throwaway and should've been a b-side, bonus cut or whatever.
* On the Maiden pick: It could have been any of the 80's albums honestly, with the exception of Piece of Mind, which I just don't vibe with on a whole. I chose Powerslave because it makes me the happiest and most nostalgic. Thanks to my guitar teacher back in the day we played most of the album for my lessons \m/
* On the Helloween pick: Big fan, but this was a weird one, especially considering my recent talk about the Keeper albums in the unpopular opinion thread. I don't think Walls is all that representative of their songwriting skills and the Keeper albums are just so hard to judge. I listened intently to both of them specifically again for this poll, and I was sort of surprised on my feelings coming out of them. So, coming in at number 10 *slightly* is Keeper 1. Musically, it's just far more consistent than part 2, and even though I still think Future World is goofy, it doesn't offend as much as say Rise & Fall. I'm Alive is a real banger as an album opener, yes. So, definitely not *the* best album of the 80's in my opinion. But the sheer force of this thing and the impact it had on so so much. It deserves a spot in the top 10.
* On Metallica and Slayer: They seem extremely popular. I did not leave them out for any reasons of them getting enough votes already or whatever. I genuinely do not care for either band enough to warrant them getting a top 10 spot, nor a spot in the HM's. Sorry not sorry.

The proper one per band way oh and fuck Metallica:

1. Manilla Road - Crystal Logic
2. Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
3. Possessed - Seven Churches
4. Sepultura - Schizophrenia
5. Brocas Helm - Black Death
6. Bathory - Blood Fire Death
7. Slayer - Reign in Blood
8. Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
9. Candlemass - Nightfall
10. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

Did it real quick so I can't second guess myself or conjure up albums which needed to be there. Autopsy fuck

Of the bands with 3+ great albums, I think the major acts will have 1 or 2 albums barely bothered by vote splitting at all. Then if the rest of their 80s albums drop a tad further down the results list it's not much harm done. So it feels more valuable to elevate a few albums up from 11th place etc., some of which may be struggling to escape rando or even get 1 point. I guess many people would say their list could change from month to month and those albums may've been top 10 anyway.

But if people decide to drop several albums of a not-so-popular band then yeah, they'll suffer as it would've been a significant portion of the band's points.

I'm only doing one album per band because, well, the notion of limiting myself to ten albums in face of the EXTREME amount of brilliant releases in the 80s is absurd and just wouldn't make a fun list otherwise. In fact, I've more or less decided to do a thrash only list because it's my favourite subgenre and I can't really pit a Maiden record against a Slayer one without feeling like I'm comparing apples and oranges. It's unfair on Maiden for sure, but people are doing all sorts of vote strategizing anyway and like Derigin I'm more interested in say, the top100 than the top10 itself. I think Maiden will fare well either way :)

My list:

1.Metallica - ...and justice for all (1988)
2.Danzig - Danzig (1988)
3.Twisted Sister - Come out and play (1985)
4.Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (1980)
5.Dio - Holy diver (1983)
6.Thin Lizzy - Thunder and lightning (1983)
7.Bathory - Blood fire death (1988)
8.Black Sabbath - Heaven & hell (1980)
9.Testament - The legacy (1987)
10.Slayer - Reign in blood (1986)

I also have a one per band rule in these contests for the reasons others have stated (easier to narrow down, spreading the love), but mostly because I plain think it looks better and more "objective" with a more diverse list.

("Objective" in quotations marks because I know it's just my kneejerk reaction - no one who does it otherwise should take it as a slight :))

Since we're trying to rank the BEST ALBUMS OF THE 80s, I'd argue that the "one per band" rule has pretty much the opposite impact of making a more "objective" list. Not that there really is anything objective to such lists to begin with. But excluding entire albums from a band, regardless of how great you think they are because you already picked an album by that band, is pretty much as far as you can possibly imagine from giving each album a fair chance.

Like, how would it be less objective to make a list that includes all 7 of 80's Maiden albums in your list?

And I mean, I understand the reasons why people choose to make their list like that, but not enforcing a one per band rule is much fairer and it also doesn't put bands with multiple good releases in the decade at a disadvantage.

I absolutely get your point, that's why I put it in quotation marks :) - it's an aesthetical preference as much as anything, diversity feels more objective to me even if it's not (to the extent that you can even debate objectivity in art). And it's my list, in the end.

I think the bands who lose out on me doing it this way are Maiden and Metallica, who already have the advantage of being the two most well-known and listened to metal bands in the world.

Personally, I chose the one-per-band route because I'm way too biased as far as favourite bands are concerned. My desert island list would probably be full of Fates Warning and Maiden. "Night on Bröcken" would squeeze out e.g. "O:M" because of my inability to accept that the latter is far better than the former, which is nonetheless more important to me on an emotional level although it doesn't deserve the accolade and attention. The one-per-band route simply puts an end to that inner conflict.

The "one album per band" approach is also a way for some to have a wider spread of subgenres represented, which is understandable, but yeah, I didn't do that for my list. I know that I'm a big death metal and black metal guy, and I don't really mind crowding my top picks with death metal because it represents my real tastes.

However, I'm still debatting whether I will include some Maiden at the bottom of my top 10. I have a few options for which Maiden I'll pick, but it's probably going to go to Powerslave or Piece of Mind, although I'm also a biiiig fan of the s/t and Killers. So yeah. It's hard to say. My current 9th and 10th spot are Consuming Impulse by Pestilence, and Dimension Hatross by Voivod. But I'm also considering Pleasure to Kill by Kreator, World Downfall by Terrorizer, Darkness Descends by Dark Angel, Nightfall by Candlemass, and maybe Ride the Lightning by Metallica for these two spots. Although I have a hard time thinking that Consuming Impulse won't make my final list. We'll see!

I have question, am I allowed to vote for releases like these two:

They were released in 2013 and 2007, but they are demo compilations from the 80's. All of its contents are from '85 to '89. So are they allowed on this poll?
If not, I can just vote for the individual demos, but it would be more convenient to vote for the compilations

5. Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
6. Accept - Restless And Wild
7. Metallica - Kill ‘Em All
8. Metal Church - S/T
9. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1
10. Fates Warning - The Spectre Within

I'm fairly certain you can't. For the 90's poll I wanted to vote for the Timeghoul compilation, but couldn't for the same reason. If you want to vote for these, you have to pick the individual demos themselves. The records released in the 80's.

But mayhe the rules changed or something, IDK. Maybe ask BastardHead directly.

10. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (1980)

After thinking about it a while, I'll probably end up making a few changes. Sultan's Ransom absolutely belongs on the list, but should go somewhat lower. Scream Bloody Gore probably needs to go. I love the album and it was very crucial to my development as a metal listener, but it's not quite top ten for me. I think I'll replace it with a Witchfinder General album, Friends of Hell most likely. It'd be great if I could find a way to fit Blood Fire Death on here, as well as Pentagram's self titled and one of King Diamond's first four. This is tougher than I thought it might be.

Yeah in cases like that, you'd need to be voting for whatever actually came out during that eligible window. Demo comps released decades later don't really fit the bill while the demos they're compiling absolutely do.

I left my submission after my first post because I knew there were albums I had forgotten. I also changed a couple of titles, instead of relying on what my favourites are today, because lets face it, tastes can change, and I have instead relied on stuff that comes back around time and again over years of listening.

1 - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
2 - Satan - Court in the Act
3 - Exodus - Bonded by Blood
4 - Manilla Road - Open the Gates
5 - Mercyful Fate - Melissa
6 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning
7 - Fates Warning - The Spectre Within
8 - Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound
9 - Cloven Hoof - A Sultan's Ranson
10 - Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver

Honourable mention top 10:

Def Leppard - High n' Dry
Death Angel - The Ultraviolence
Anthrax - Among the Living
Manowar - Into Glory Ride
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
Blitzkrieg - A Time of Changes
Voivod - Killing Technology
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Running Wild - Death or Glory

7. Iron Maiden - Killers
8. Anthrax - Among The Living
9. W.A.S.P. (1984)
10. Savatage - Sirens

I'm surprised to see Lightning so high without Puppets making a showing - lol!

I did the 1-per-band thing. If I didn't, there would have been 4 Metallica albums on there.

I think I am fairly certain about the top 6 but still deciding on the last 4.

1. Destruction - Infernal Overkill
2. Deathrow - Raging Steel
3. Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
4. Sadus - Illusions
5. Onslaught - The Force
6. Kreator - Pleasure to Kill

I believe that will be my top 6. I wrote down about 20 albums that are being considered for the top 10.

I am just hoping my top two dont end up in the rando corner because that would disappoint me a little, as I havent seen anyone
else list either Destruction or Deathrow.

So Metallica is so good, you're going to leapfrog less deserving bands ahead of them... Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the poll?

I figured others would name different Metallica albums anyway. I figured correctly.

You may as well vote for Anvil or A7X with that attitude. You're diminishing your own vote, but maybe that's for the best. :) :)
