Never heard of them. But that is mostly because I tend to ignore anything 'black metal' the past two decades (with a few exceptions)

Listening through To Know the Light it's a pretty cool album. I like that sort of fast and atmospheric black metal. It reminds me of a few American bands like Panopticon and WitTR but obviously not exactly the same.

Typical bad luck that I discover bands by reading about them breaking up.

Let me get this straight... They disbanded because the got too big to properly convey their message?

Isn't that like a whole new opportunity to convey their message and have it go further and reach more people? Or did I misread something?

You misread. They disbanded because they feel their work as a band is done. No more records under the name Dawn Ray'd and they're gonna focus on other projects for organizing or whatever creative outlets they may pursue;

They remind me of Deafheaven: I hate their fans, I hate their haters, and I don't have a problem with their music. The ones saying they were incredible are obviously deluded, and the ones saying they suck probably never played a single instrument in their lives. I heard of these dudes thanks to some random guy's tshirt, who claimed they were very controversial because of their politics. I thought he was full of shit, but here we are. I liked the one album I heard. I might hear it again now that I'm more open minded.

I have to listen to more black metal.

But there's a lot of experimentation and different kind of stuff within black metal, especially over the past 20 years or so. My favorite modern acts are things like Panopticon (Americana-folk inspired black metal), Saidan (Japanese-horror inspired melodic black), and Sadness (black metal meets synth midwest emo). There's tons of variation. Dawn Ray'd isn't the absolute most unique band of the modern era, but it still gives its own flavor along with its unique thematics. Also plenty of bands doing more progressive, technical, or avant-garde things (i.e. Ashenspire) that's not my personal thing but gives the genre lots more variation.

You don't even need to go down the route of outright experimentation.

Here's a pretty random list of personal favorites of mine, all recent albums, that shows the sheer range of black metal as a sub-genre:

Macabre Omen - Gods of War - at War; Kawir - Αδράστεια
Carpe Noctem - Vitrun
Acrimonious - Eleven Dragons
Aosoth - IV: Arrow in Heart
Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise
Lunar Aurora - Hoagascht
Nocte Obducta - Irrlicht

If you have an ear for nuance, and not even that subtle nuance, I don't see how it's even possible to come up with the idea a huge majority of black metal sounds the same. I mean, sure, there are many bands just peddling their variant of Under a Funeral Moon, but even taking this into account, it seems pretty obvious to me that the overall black metal scene has undergone niche-ification that's similar to what happened in death metal. This means there's different base sounds bands and musicians are going off of, and solely on that grounds it's too simplistic to say black metal sounds all the same.

Now I have literally 20 black metal bands to check out. Thanks to all of you, going to start listening to those.

Lunar Aurora - Hoagascht

Speaking of Lunar Aurora, I can't think of a band I miss more...especially seeing how perfect Hoagascht was,...albeit a bit different from previous material. It was probably the ultimate swan song with the perfect tone for their last album. Lunar Aurora just has an absolute flawless discography though. Their split with Paysage d'Hiver is top tier black metal...probably one of the greatest black metal splits ever recorded.

I assume it was because of some sort of financial strain considering they were on or about to be on tour. It's the only explanation that really makes sense.

The explanation they gave makes sense enough already. Stop reaching.

I mean not really. They didn't explain why they booked and cancelled a whole tour. Especially since they were posting about how excited they were for the tour like a week before they broke up. Obviously something happened in the time between them posting on social media about being excited and them breaking up.

I liked thier message but I'm not too disappointed as the last two albums were average. To be honest if I'm going to listen to leftist black metal I'd much rather listen to Trespasser.

Yeah, it all happened pretty quickly.

I quite liked these guys and their message, great to have some variety in metal topics and viewpoints but as much as I tried their music never clicked with me or wowed me. Still a shame they're gone
