Tom Petty - Free Falling

Along with Dio my biggest regret that I never saw him live.

Blue Öyster Cult - Cultösaurus Erectus

Nice laidback hard rock. Don't know if it will ever top Fire of Unknown Origin, but it has some cool numbers.

Absolutely beautiful and atmospheric song from Draconian. It's Autumn anyway...

Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific
Cannibal Corpse - Violence Unimagined
Cannibal Corpse - Red Before Black

Big ol' Cannibal Corpse mood since the new one came out and I swear it's like an amalgamation of the prior two - which is the case. "Surround, Kill, Devour" absolutely... kills, but I think the newer one is, tit for tat, better than the last two.

Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac

Love this album. It's primitive as fuck but listening to it is like a pure shot of adrenaline. Favorite song is probably "Iron Dogs" which sounds like early Manowar.

I listened to Straight to Hell yesterday and it left me quite indifferent, but this? Wow, I love it, totally full of twist and turns.

Some of it can be grating ("Cunt of a Bitch," "Troopers Holler"), but there's a lot of really quality stuff on there... the "Gutter Town" title track is some of the catchiest stuff ever. The long title track with Tom Waits is so great too.

Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead

This is so fuckin brilliant. Grooves and spaced out bliss for days. Can't wait for the new one.

Cradle of Filth - Deceiving Eyes

I find "Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa" to be one of COF's more tired-sounding albums... but this track's pretty damn good.

Such an awesome album, deserves more attention but the raw production will put off a lot of listeners. My favorites off it are Rising Of The Dead, Stand Up & Fight, Black Witch and of course Heavy Metal Fuckin Maniac itself.

One of the all time greats in my book. Love the 70's feel to it, you could imagine them being able to break out into extended jams like Purple or Led Zep if they wished.

NP: Godflesh - Purge

Took me so long to get a copy after being fucked around by a shitty seller. Totally worth the wait tho, this is Godflesh after all. Godflesh at their best in fact, killer album it is indeed.

There’s a lot of those around, unfortunately.

NP: The Smiths- Meat is Murder

Morrissey may be a wackadoodle but the man’s got a strong aura like no one else. And what an album this is, especially the title track. So poignant.

Cirith Ungol just know how to do it... and yeah that Godflesh album I've got to buy sometime. Very good.

Sorcerer - The Crowning of the Fire King

There's something really cool about this - a really enveloping, serious feel, forces you to pay attention.

I liked it so much that this morning I had to listen to some Tom Waits to experience his voice again!

Also King of the Dead was really their peak, one of the best albums of the 80's

Vision Of Disorder - Imprint

Bout time I revisited this beast coz it's one of the highlights of the late 90's for sure. Monstrous riffs all over the place and a equally monstrous vocal performance from Tim Williams.

I love the guitarwork on this album, probably Cradle's best.

Bruce Dickinson - Tattooed Millionaire
Maiden - A Matter Of Life and Death

Bruce’s debut solo album has a few silly/cheesy tunes but the rest is killer. More hard rock than metal but perhaps all the better for that. “Born in ‘58” is better than any song on "Chemical Wedding" to my ears.

^ 'Born in 58' is absolutely awesome! So much feeling in it. I've never loathed any Dickinson solo album. Yes, 'Tattooed Millionaire' has some cheesy tunes and 'Balls to Picasso' has a flawed production job, but I've always liked both albums. Might have something to do with the fact, that Mr. Dickinson is my favourite voice.

NP: Deathwitch - Violence Blasphemy Sodomy
Morbid death/black stuff. Surprisingly okay drum machine, which isn't so easy to be noticed (same samples betrayed it).

Supremacy. The best song I've heard this year. I know it's an old song, but still.

This morning:

Mercyful Fate - “Time”
Arguably a step back from “In the Shadows” but a classic nonetheless and a master class in riffage and soloing.

Accept - “Restless and Wild”
Such a razor sharp record.

That's a tall order... intrigued now, for sure. I never actually heard Tattooed Millionaire. I'll have to at least try that song today. Better than "Darkside of Aquarius" and "Omega" huh?

edit - I did try it; good song. Nostalgic rock number... I like that he isn't using that dumb scratchy tone he did on No Prayer and FOTD like I expected. I'll try the full album.

Pagan Altar - Mythical & Magical

The go-to album for autumn for me... misty atmospherics, great grooves and heavy riffs.

Some other plays today...

Sun Ra - A Fireside Chat with Lucifer
Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre
Mark Shelton - Obsidian Dreams

That was a type-o on my part. I meant to say "better than anything on Chemical Wedding". Make no mistake - I love Chemical Wedding but "Born in '58" is a sublime, heartfelt piece of autobiography that's, unfortunately, uncommon in metal.

Oh well TCW is my favorite solo thing he did. But yeah agreed that more autobiographical, down and dirty, lyrical stuff like that other song would be cool. I'm looking forward to trying the full thing.

Bruce Dickinson - Inside the Machine

Skunkworks is something I can sorta just ride like a wave.

Be warned: there are songs on "Tattooed Millionaire" that are just dumb and will induce cringing!!
I recall being utterly disappointed when it came out as, in the ignorance of youth, I was expecting a continuation of "Seventh Son". I was NOT ready for its mix of AC/DC and the fluffy pop-metal of the late 80s. LOL
But the good stuff (Son Of A Gun, Born in '58, Gypsy Road, his cover of "All the Young Dudes") is excellent.

Pink Floyd - The Piper At the Gates of Dawn

Whimsical and very 60's British feeling. More psychedelia than progressive as I look at it. Good but not great, missing one thing that helped define Floyd for me. David Gilmour's guitar.

Windir - 1184

Trying to listen to more black metal, this one is very melodic and a very European kind of metal, it has some Viking-themed chants in the style of Bathory. I don't really know if I like this, but will still try some albums.

Naglfar - Vittra

After trying a lot of black metal albums this caught my attention, the drumming part is simply amazing and it has some cool violin parts that add a lot of emotion to the album. I think melodic black is my style since I really like this and Dissection, Sacramentum, and Dawn.

Ne Obliviscaris - Portal Of I

It has a pedantic nature but for some reason it seems sincere to me, I don't think it's about a group of musicians making pretentious music to look better than the others, but it's really their vision resulting from their musical concerns. An album to listen to many times.
