Control Denied - Consumed

Chuck had a feel for the dense, complex rhythms and strange guitar patterns. This is like music made in some 100-year-far future. Pretty out there for metal standards, a lot of things tried, for sure. He's a death metal guy interpreting prog/power in this really quite different way, with all different shades and moods and styles of writing. Very intriguing.

Their first four are untouchable. They were a 70s band that happened to exist in the mid 80s.

Shezmu - A Travers les Lambeaux

« La fièvre les emportera tous, autant les faibles que les grands. Et c’est avec grande joie que la mort triomphera »

« Fever will take them all, as much the weak as the great. With great joy, death will triumph. »

Premium quality death metal from my neck of the woods.

My Dying Bride - The Fever Sea

The artwork and title indicate how this album sounds. I find this a lot more gloomy in a broad melancholic sense, rather than a personalized manner that one could expect of The Angel and the Dark River. Nice to hear some growls again, too.

Grip Inc. - Nemesis

This is cool. Post-thrash metal / post-punk, that sounds very German. 1990's Kreator and Killing Joke crashing together. Must check out the rest of their discography...

Pharaoh - The Year of the Blizzard

Bury the Light is their most colorful and emotional work, the one with the most catharsis, even if I sometimes go for the more melodic complexity of Be Gone or the extreme techy side of Powers That Be... but this one, in the middle of both, does feel so complete and epic, with a real storm of a flow to it all, a lot of poignance and power.

"Fever Sea" crushes.
They are one of my fav bands and have been since first hearing "Swans" in 1994. Nothing I'd ever heard sounded like it...it is as much prog as it is doom. 'Prog' in the sense of pushing boundaries and doing something new & fresh.

NP, speaking of boundary-pushing artists:
Steven Wilson - "The Harmony Codex"
The title track is mesmerizing.

Shylmagoghrar - "Emergence"
I've no idea how to pronounce the band's name but when the music is this good, who cares?

Kiss - Love Gun

Another classic album if slightly less good than Deströyer. There’s still plenty to like here. Those guys are eternal party boys and it’s no wonder why they have/had such a large following.

Devilment - Hitchcock Blonde

This Dani Filth side project sounds like what would have happened if Cradle of Filth progressed further with what they were doing on "Thornography". Whether or not you think that's a good thing is up to you. Not sure this is something I'd wanna listen to all the time but I don't hate it either - catchy, at least. It also makes me even more thankful for those last few COF albums.

Varathron - Crowsreign

Same problem I had with The Lament of Gods, it's too experimental and eclectic for his own good and ends up being unmemorable, the keyboard player is too prominent for my taste.

Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream

This is almost like a blueprint for classic DM... just a lot of crunchy, barraging riffs and beastly, nasty vocal work. Pretty great.

Blut Aus Nord - Day of Revenge (The Impure Blood of Theirs)

Revenge's day has come! Let's spill the blood of the bastard!!!

It doesn't get much better than this.

I need to revisit some My Dying Bride. My absolute favourite is The Angel and the Dark River, but I also haven't really given the later albums a good chance, except for The Dreadful Hours.

W.A.S.P. - Kill, Fuck Die

This is actually killer. Industrial overtones for sure, but Blackie's riffs and melodies are still there.
'The Horror' is some scary shit.

Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family)

This might be my nr 1 favourite doom song of all time. It's up there with classic Sabbath.

Exhumed - Necromaniac (live)

From the Ultimate Death Revenge album. It sounds awful but the raw energy is there.

Sulphur Aeon - Gateway to the Antisphere

Powerful, torrential melding of guitar riffs, leads, furious drums - a maelstrom of a fuckin DM album.

Todays workday spings

Necrot - Blood Offerings - I need to get the next one as this album scratches most of my itches when it comes to death metal. Catchy bludgeoning songs.

Saor - Origins - Man I love this album. It takes me on a journey. A nice mix of folk and black metal.

This isn't far off, especially if we're talking COB circa "Something Wild" due to the very clear meloblack elements (though there's more of it on this album than on SW... which makes sense since their EPs are basically straight up symphonic/melodic black metal). Very good stuff!

Amorphis - The Way

Strange but great two-song-combo that hit me this morning.

Awesome album and it's got one of my favorite songs on it Worth Fighting For.

NP: Earth Crisis - Gomorrah's Season Ends

Their 2nd album and it's another kick ass collection of tunes. If this thing had solos it would be on MA for sure.

Car stereo: Black Sabbath - The Sabbath Stones

Super cool compilation of Ozzyless Sabbath songs.

Root - Zjeveni

Amazingly fully realized even on their debut album. This is just so creative with the songwriting, truly unpredictable and with that morbid atmosphere. Great, thundering, innovative riffs. What a band!

Portland's answer to Autopsy, it seems. Punky and primitive death metal. I have no problem with this.
