It's been more accepted these days that Rome was a very impressive civilization for its time and very influential to the modern West, with things like aqueducts, more efficient concrete than today's, an empire that lasted for 1500 years, and whatever else Monty Python says. I'm not a Romeaboo by any means, but I think it's a neat topic that would fit in metal music, particularly power metal. I'm including anything ranging from the Roman Kingdom to the Republic to the Empire, and I'm also including the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire here (it's a direct continuation of Rome), though I would not include stuff like the Holy Roman Empire here for now. Any topics that are based on Rome are allowed, such as history, culture, mythology (specifically Roman mythology, not Greek), etc.

So far the only song that I have in mind at the moment is the Glory of Rome by Avantasia, though the Edguy album Theater of Salvation has an album cover that looks pretty Roman, hough I'm not sure if there are actual Roman songs there. What are some other Rome-based songs you can think of?

When was it ever not accepted that Rome wasn't an impressive civilisation?

You didn't need so much useless text for such a simple question.

The entire Hesperia catalogue is based on the history of Rome:

Metal De Facto's debut is about Rome. Their next one is about Samurais.

I also highly recommend Centvrion's "V" from 2015 if you like Halford/Primal Fear stuff.

The most obvious one is Ex Deo who are so much more than death metal, with a huge cinematic scope. If you check out one piece of music from them, the breakdown in "The Rise of Hanniba" at 2:40 when Maurizio yells "Let the blood of Rome flow in the ocean of war"

Botch's "Man the Ramparts". I'm dead serious.

Iron Flames is a new band that sings about never setting suns and so forth, pretty good but clearly no one told them about Geri and Freki

ShadowIcon's debut album is basically a concept album about the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Imperial era.

Apud Inferos was one. The band only did one demo and a full length though.

Eastern Roman Empire (absolutely the continuation of the Roman Empire, as the Roman Empire evolved into the Christian Greco-Roman empire):

Judicator - Let There Be Nothing, concept on Belisarius' fabricated tale by Procopius), Justinian's best general.

Spoiler: show

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY BAL-SAGOTH!

EX DEO (melodic death metal) deals exclusively with the Roman Empire. Great stuff.

TURISAS have two albums dealing with the Varangial Guards, the Viking mercenaries who served as bodyguard to the East Roman emperor in Byzantium.
