Revisiting all I've listened to this year for my final top 10 - Part 6

Ὁπλίτης(Hoplites) - Τρωθησομένη
This is seriously good, it's miles ahead of the debut, everything fits together here, it's more direct and compact and yet it feels like it expands their sound a lot more, heavy riffs for days thanks to a thrash influence that works exceptionally well. It blows my mind every time I listen to it.

Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines...

This is really genuinely stunning music, like some of the best extreme metal you can find I think. Waves of synthesized darkness and mysticism, just rolling and rolling.

Ascension - Under the Veil of Madness

This is really fuckin good. Very Dragonforce, but with way better songwriting and just a lot of care put in. A lot of it tends to sound the same, but it's just really well-done for that anyway. Definitely some of the better power metal in 2023.

Darkthrone - Paragon Belial

A Blaze In The Northern Sky is such a classic 2nd wave black metal album! I think it's still my favorite Darkthrone record of all time. I love the atmosphere, the riffs, the screams, the drumming, and the longer tracks on this. The whole death metal infused black metal approach of this one might feel like it's not "pure" black metal to some, but to me it works wonders. It's black metal with a great bleak atmosphere, solid instrumentation, and it just feels more fleshed out and well-rounded compared to some of the rawer black metal that was being produced at the time. Not that I dislike the rawer, more stripped down approach that DT would explore on following records, but ABITNS is just such a solid album that standouts still. I love it!

Yeah I agree. I think I prefer its hints of death metal and some technical bits here and there compared to Funeral Moon or especially Transylvanian Hunger, which I cannot get into. Though I have heard guitar covers of some TH songs that I liked, but I have my limits accepting necro production.

NP - Cirith Ungol - Sailor on the Seas of Fate

Will this album be my #1? Its a strong possibility. Just love what they are doing. Ballsy metal with some mysticism and a great guitar tone.

Obituary - Barely Alive

Though I keep waiting to say Buried Alive. A real banger to start off a killer Obituary album. Doing anything new? No, just doing what Obituary does best. Bludgeoning death metal with big grooves.

I still dig this album despite the obvious autotune vocals.

Another fantastic release by this prog/prog-metal band; they've never disappointed. A great complimentary band to Threshold (and that was before Damian Wilson joined Arena!).

Trespass - Wolf At The Door

Wow. Gotta thank Chairthrower, whose review for Wolf At The Door (and Quartz!) got me interested in checking out what these veterans have to offer these day's. Heavy metal songs of the classic traditional kind done with heart and conviction and I love it. Gotta highlight the lead work on this, it's tasty as fuck.
Sadly, like Quartz, I think this will be overlooked by most, hell, I nearly did too but sure am glad I gave em a chance. A where the fuck did this come from 4/5.

Go Ahead And Die - Unhealthy Mechanisms

Listening to Go Ahead And Die and reading about the long overdue death of Sepultura is somehow appropriate. Max and son Igor are killing it on here, just one massive riff after another, hammering the nails into the coffin of Andreas Kissers Sepultura. GAAD are a most dangerous animal indeed, easy 4/5.

Cirith Ungol - Dark Parade

Only one other album could stand in the way of this being my album of the year and that's Godthrymm's "Distortions". It may well end up being a coin toss. We'll see.
Dark Parade is indeed an incredible true heavy metal album. A work of art, crafted from chaos, doom and despair. 5/5

Godflesh - Purge

I'm a huge Godflesh fan. Purge covers it all really, kinda like a best of, but not quite their best of if ya know what I mean. It's a great album tho. So close to a...I wanna give it a 5...but its a brutally cathartic 4/5

Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific

C.C.'s 16th album! Crazy to think about. I jumped on the train when they released Butchered and I've got off and on the train a few times over the years. I think Bloodthirst is their last essential album, everything since has been of a reasonably high quality, they're super consistent, almost to a frustrating degree. Chaos Horrific is no exception. Drain You Empty is a cool track and I wouldn't mind them mixing it up a bit more with songs like it on the next one. They've become such an institution that I think they could experiment a bit and not lose fans. Nearly a 4 but it's a very enjoyable 3/5

Sepultura - Means to an End

At least they're ending things on a high note - "Quadra" is a damn good album imo. They've had so many ups and downs over the years.

Revisiting all I've listened to this year for my final top 10 - Part 7

7 H.Target - Yantra Creating

It is true that I have never listened to their previous material, and although it has some deficiencies, I liked it a lot, it is brutal, technical, adventurous and the inclusion of the hindi mantras is well done, if anything I am quite curious about the previous material if I have read people saying that this is the worse thing they have done.

Enforcer - Nostalgia

80's worship right there, simple and direct, with some glam touches that suit it well, usually it's ok without much more but suddenly it hits you with some great tracks like "Heartbeats" or "Metal Supremacy" and you realise that there is a lot more talent here than it may seem at first sight. Plus the guys are hot, bonus point.

Dødheimsgard - It Does Not Follow

Some parts here reminds me of music from ''Spyro the Dragon'' on PS1.
Haha, love it!

This new album by DHG is awesome.

Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg For Death

This is an absolute joy to listen to. They sound fuckin great on this and sub 40min is perfect length wise. Just a toe tapping, head banging, body slamming, good ol time to be found here.
A make sure to stretch, put a mouth guard in and fuck shit up 4/5!

High Spirits - Lonely Nights

Chris Black is a master of ergonomic songwriting. It's simple and instantly understandable without secrets or fancy things - but it doesn't bore or feel amateurish. Just fun and catchy to listen to.

Revisiting all I've listened to this year for my final top 10 - Part 8

Austere - Corrosion Of Hearts

This is ok, good melodies, good vocal performance, in general everything is fine, but it doesn't catch me like others of its genre, maybe not ambitious enough and too solemn for an album that has been waited for 14 years.

Catacomb - When the Stars Are Right

I was really excited to see that finally this band had released an official album (I always liked In the Maze of Kadath) and I found it a curious work because although it is an album with a quite clean production, more attached to what death metal has been in the last 20 years, there is an old school feeling in their sound and in the dynamics of the songwriting, quite satisfying.

Indeed. The lead work! You instantly realise they must be seasoned veterans from the proto-metal days.

Now Playing :

Stress Positions – Harsh Reality

Less than 20 minutes of short, female-fronted hardcore eruptions. Just what you need when you're late but can't find the keys. The vocals are a bit monotonous, though.

Inculter – Morbid Origin

Blackened thrash from Norway, "blackened" in the sense of first wave black metal. Sounds like a mix of elements from the German and American thrash scenes in the late 80s and recent Venom. The influences are seamlessly integrated, and it all makes sense. Nice!

Night Crowned – Tales

Opulent melodic black metal from Sweden. Varied songwriting, some clean singing. Sounds like the soundtrack to some tyrannical king walking on a red carpet and fits in with other brilliant current melodic black metal bands like Stormruler and Stormkeep.

The Kryptik – A Journey to the Darkest Kingdom

Symphonic black metal just isn't my cup of tea but the keyboards and choirs here are so close to Toto's classic "Dune" soundtrack that the album is hard to ignore.
