Since my Cannibal Corpse Album Ranking post did surprising well, I wanna do another one with Burzum. Same thing with the CC Ranking, post your list of Burzum albums from worst to best and explain why.

BEST: Hvis lyset tar oss
2: Filosofem
3: Burzum
4: Hliðskjálf
5: Fallen
6: Det som engang var
7: Belus
8: Aske
9: Umskiptar
10: The Ways of Yore
11: Dauði Baldrs
12: Thulêan Mysteries
13: Sôl austan, Mâni vestan
WORST: From the Depths of Darkness

From the Depths of Darkness is mainly just a bunch of forgettable covers with little original material. I also don't like a lot of modern ambient albums he posted, though Dauði Baldrs did grew on me a bit. Umskiptar is Varg's "worst" black metal. Not terrible, but more mediocre. I didn't enjoy Det som engang var as much as other people, but Fallen was slightly better with more variety in songwriting and composition. Hliðskjálf is easily one of my favorite dungeon synth albums, and the self-titled album holds up well. Of course, there's Filosofem and Hvis lyset tar oss, which still remain one of my favorite black metal albums of all time.

1. Hvis lyset tar oss
2. Filosofem
3. Det som engang var
4. Belus
5. Burzum
6. Fallen
7. Hliðskjálf
8. Sôl austan, Mâni vestan
9. Dauði Baldrs
10. Thulêan Mysteries
11. Umskiptar
12. Aske
13. From the Depths of Darkness

I don't think I need to comment much on nr. 1 and 2. They are black metal of the purest excellence, and generally recognized as such. Taking the basic template of black metal and expanding it with ambient music and exploring emotional and spiritual soundscapes. The music is not complex technically, but Varg has shown that his main talent is songwriting and understanding timing for maximum emotional response. Hvis lyset tar oss gets nr. 1 for having Det som en gang var, which might be my favourite song of all time, regardless of genre.

Belus is the only "post-prison album" that I consider to be really good. It doesn't grab you immediately with catchy melodies or dramatic songwriting in the same was that Fallen does, but I find Belus has more staying power. I got tired of Fallen after a while. Umskiptar sucks. The Aske EP is pretty forgetable when you ignore the controversy around its release, and From the Depths of Darkness I have never revisited after one listen.

I'm not a big fan of the pure ambient albums either. Some of them have gems, like Feðrahellir on Sôl austan, Mâni vestan is excellent.

Filosofem > HLTO > Literally everything else.

I've only ever enjoyed those two albums. Also seriously not interested in financing Varg's aryan breeding program any more than I already did back in high school.

I love some of the stuff Burzum did and I think some of it is pretty bad. However I never heard the whole discography. I will take this thread as a reason to go through every album and try to rank them :-)

CC has a long and mostly consistent run of albums so there is a lot of personal preferences and potential discussion there but I dunno about Burzum. Aside from the odd few who care to debate the quality (or lack of) in the post-prison stuff, I really can't see anything other than Hvis and Filosofem alternating between 1 and 2.

HLTO - Easily his best album by a long shot.

Then:
Belus - Magnificent album. In terms of pure songwriting, it's his 2nd best, only hindered by production and a couple of filler tracks. Glemselvens Elv is probably his 2nd best song, just behind Det som engang var.
S/T - unique atmosphere and good narrative flow. Fully packed with good tracks.
Filosofem - I'm not a fan of the vocals on this one, but the tracks are very well written.
Fallen - The riffing is killer" Vocals are also cool. It's way less consistent than the others. The Title track is awesome.

As much as I like ambient music in general terms, I don't think any of his albums are particularly good.

3 first full-lenghts is all I need, great releases + Aske has a couple of good tracks (have the old CD-versions where Aske is alone)

Good luck with your Burzum listening experience!

I see your concern, since the majority of Burzum fans, including me, consider Filosofem/Hvis Lyset Tar Oss his best work, but I'm hoping to see how people feel about his other albums and if there's someone out there who considers one of his albums better than Filosofem/Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.

I would honestly rank them chronologically up to and including Filosofem. Everything after is close to, if not completely, worthless.

3- Fallen
4- S/T
5- Belus
6- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
7- The Ways of Yore/Sôl Austan, Mâni Vestan

He's got a giant, and very patchy discography of stuff I either love or stuff I have absolutely no stomach for. I like a lot of ambient stuff as much as I like his black metal material. Some of it is garbage, but some is great background music. Filosofem is a strong #1 though, that album is amazing.

I don't consider any of his albums to be great, most (if not all) of them suffer from having a ton of filler. You can even hear the quality dropping as the minutes pass on Hvis lyset tar oss, each song sounds worse and more unfinished than the previous one. He should have released EPs instead or albums, I remember Aske being fine. I don't listen to Burzum nowadays though.

This pretty much. Never cared much for the ambient stuff and it was pretty clear Varg was over black metal throughout the last decade.

You asked, unfortunately...I don’t listen to any of it any more. Filosofem is a good example of making shitty production sound good, good guitar tone. But that seems to be mostly by accident. He doesn’t really care about heaviness, and seems to really detest most metal and rock(he, correctly, points out that it takes influence from black music). It has three really excellent atmospheric black metal songs, each about 7 minutes. Then you get 7 minutes of guitar noise and samples, which sucks. The album closes with another, additional one, but in between, you get 25 minutes of the most boring bullshit. There’s just no excuse.
Unsurprisingly, that keyboard crap, is what he turned into. His black metal is plagued by bad album ordering/pacing, and weak songwriting. But his Aryan keyboard music is just unlistenable. What’s the point? He’s admitted that his new stuff is the official soundtrack, to his rpg. Which is just a racist version of D&D, except with more cumbersome rules.
He and his wife seem to have never had jobs, in their lives, and are having as many children as possible, to make more “white warriors,” and get the biggest welfare checks possible(my hatred, for the welfare state, is motivated by seeing Christian conservatives get paid my money, to breed, which keeps the majority voting for their oppressive policies, all while claiming to hate socialism, of course). He and his music, are what you would expect, out of some keyboard warrior who hates good music, and good everything, and makes long YouTube videos, defending his dumb ideas, with the most illogical arguments.
Belus is actually good, musically, and doesn’t make me want to fall asleep. Honestly, I get surprised by all the hate for “hipster” black metal, because to me, those bands sound lvery similar to Burzum, but with actual quality.

This is surprisingly difficult. Apparently I like all of Varg's metal releases pretty equally, even the criminally underrated Umskiptar. (I don't count From the Depths of Darkness which is completely pointless.) I'm pretty ambivalent on his ambient releases: I love Hliðskjálf, Daudi Baldrs is horrible and the rest are alright I guess, but nothing I'd listen to. Filosofem would certainly take the number one spot, but the rest are next to impossible to sort in a meaningful way.

I would like to put Belus and Fallen high on the list because I love them, but the first four are eternally cemented there. Hard to even rank them. Maybe:

1. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
2. Burzum
3. Det Som Engang Var
4. Filosofem
5. Fallen
6. Belus

Hlidskjalf takes the good 7th place, and Daudi and Umskiptar come after that - in that order, because I like the last two songs on the former. The last ambient albums I've not heard entirely. From the Depths of Darkness seemed like a worthless attempt I've not cared to check out.

Hard to think where to put Aske. I used to listen to it as a part of the first album. Didn't even know it was an independent EP at first.

Hvis is number one because listening to it is equivalent to being in a waking dream.

Filosofem next because it's odinpop.

Burzum/Aske next because it's the template for proper black metal according to saint Euro.

Then Daudi Baldrs because I accidently made a cover version of "I heimr heljar" as a kid when I was messing with the settings on my dad's old casio.

Hlidskjalf because it's odinjazz.

Demo II: why has there never been a proper version of "Depressive Visions of the Cursed Warrior"?

Fallen for all the jeg faller memes.

Umskiptar because it's actually pretty clever the way the album continuously slows down as it goes on starting dramatically and then mellowing out.

Det Som Engang Var because that's the album I always forget about.

Belus because nobody can remember any of the songs except the cover of daudi baldrs.

Sol Austan Mani Vestan because it has the only Burzum Christmas song we're ever going to get.

The Ways Of Yore next for the nice poetry readings and "to hel and back again" but this low because of the useless re-record of Tomhet. Why?

Thulean Mysteries: burzum detritus.

Last is obviously From the Depths off Darkness: totally boring covers or already perfect songs. Why again?

1. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (basically for Det Som Engang Var alone. That song is black metal perfection)
2. Det Som Engang Var
3. Burzum/Aske
4. Filosofem
5. Belus
6. Fallen
7. Umskiptar

I’ve never cared about the ambient works, I used to laugh throwing on Daudi Baldrs. Just terrible. The black metal albums are truly classics, perhaps the only two that fall short is Fallen and Umskiptar.

1. Filosofem tied with Hvis Lyset Tart Oss
2. Burzum
3/4. Det Som Engang Var tied with Aske
5. The Ways of Yore
6. Belus
7. Hlidskjalf
8. Fallen
9. Umskiptar
10. Thulean Mysteries
11. Daudi Baldrs
12. Sôl austan, Mâni vestan

I like everything just about everything hes done except maybe the racist youtube channel.
I think to say that Filosofem is great but Belus, Fallen and TWoY are "total shit" is some silly shit IMO
ALSO TWoY isn't Ambient its Neofolk :)

I've been mostly turned off from exploring Varg's material, but I do love that song. Does he have any others like it, or have any followers ripped it off successfully? It's that hypnotic synth part in particular.

^Dunkelheit from Filosofem might be up your alley with the hypnotic synth. I love both tracks but prefer HLTO. There was actually an album released this year from Faidra which is a total Filosofem era Burzum rip off but I quite liked it.

Anyways, for me HLTO will always be 1 because of Det Som En Gang Var and Tomhet, by far his best ambient track. Simple and atmospheric. Filosofem is a close second but the final track if way, way too long and isnt a patch on Tomhet. DSEV album would be next

A lot of love for Daudi Baldrs, which surprised me. That album was universally hated here in 2007.

Maybe the dungeon synth genre has become more popular in recent years?

Hvis
Filosofem
ST/Aske
DSEV

HLTO is outstanding and is an album I listen to semi-frequently.
The others I've listed I enjoy, but rarely listen to.

The other albums I've never listened to in full, though my partner enjoys a wider range of the catalogue and I don't mind some of what comes up (including some of the ambient stuff).

This is really true. The first song on that album is close to black metal perfection, then it just sorta.... dwindles off into nothingness?
His first post-prison album was a good comeback, even if some of it was Daudi Baldrs reworkings, but even then lots of filler.
Is he even doing anything musically anymore, or just ranting on the internet? I kinda lost interest when he went into that post-prison "this is the music of our eUroPeaN fOrEbEaRs!!" nonsense, or pretending he has no interest in the BM past but also delving heavily into it for the views etc. Some of his ambient stuff was ok but it's not something I'd revisit these days.

In any case, I'd rate them as:

1. Filosofem
2. Hvis Lisett Tar Oss
3. Det Som Engang Var
4. Burzum/Aske
5. Belus
6. Hlidskjalf
-Daylight-
7. Daudi Baldrs

haven't bothered with anything else.

Some of Burzum's stuff has been soooo influential, not just on me but on black metal as a whole... Choosing is difficult, because I like a lot of his albums for different reasons.

It's probably something like:

1. Filosofem
The archetype that all depressive black metal artists aspire to be, and with good reason. That swarming guitar sound, the sombre downplayed synth melodies, the sparse drumming. It all adds to this huge, intrusive and oppressing atmosphere. I would also claim that Rundgang is the best dark ambient track ever made.

2. Det som engang var
Slighty more refined than the debut, but still as fierce. Some of Varg's best tracks are on this album in my opinion. The instrumentals, particularly, are genius.

3. Hvis lyset tar oss
I love it, but compared to DSEV it meanders a bit much without achieving the full-on cosmic atmosphere of Filosofem.

4. Daudi Baldrs
Its influence on dungeon synth can not be understated. Of course the sound comes off a bit goofy, but the compositions are incredible.

5. Hlidskjalf
In a way Hlidskjalf is better than DB, at least in the way that it feels more cohesive and more like a fully formed album than Daudi Baldrs.

6. Burzum + Aske
Raw and rough around the edges, but it laid the groundwork for what Burzum was to become and still has a lasting effect to this day.

7. Fallen
The only post-prison album of his I would ever listen to, and even so I never do.

8. Belus + Umskiptar
Boring, meandering, uninspired. Had literally any no-name black metal band released these albums, no-one would've given a shit.

9. From the Depths of Darkness
It's just really unnecessary, isn't it? I know Varg doesn't consider it an album, but why even make this. Even if for some reason you like the newer production, it's still not as good as the original versions.

10. Sol austan Mani vestan + The Ways of Yore + Thulean Mysteries
Who cares. What a bore. I've listened to all of them exactly twice, and none of the tracks are any good.

There are at least two decently sized and still-growing DS groups on Facebook. Dungeon Synth has definitely been growing in popularity over the last 5-10 years

I wrote earlier that I had never heard the whole discography and that I would go back and do so and then try to rank the albums. Well I did but never posted the results. These are my thoughts:

Burzum

I had heard this once or twice before and I never liked it. I still don't. The atmosphere isn't really there and not much else I enjoy either. I can live in peace never to listen to this one again.

Aske

A step up but its only an EP. The re-recording sounds better to my ears. The sudden ending to the first track really spoils it for me though. I never understood why some bands do this (Dream Theater I'm looking at you).

Det som engang var

I always hated the first minute or so if this one. To the point I previously didn't give it a chance. But listening to it front to back I can really appreciate this album. More of what Burzum would become is present here. The atmosphere is here, the ambient and the droning style. Clearly the best release so far.

Hvis lyset tar oss

And then comes this one, a masterpiece. Everything is in its right place here. The only thing that makes this not a serious contender for the best Burzum album is the first half of Inn i slottet fra droemmen which I feel is a step down from everything else. Otherwise great album. I was very familiar with this album from before.

Filosofem

Varg's magnum opus. Nothing is bad here, everything is perfect for what I want my Burzum to be. The low-fo production (but not piercing like it can be at times), the mood and atmosphere, the ambient and the drone. A giant of an album and one of the best black metal albums of all time. I was very familiar with this album from before.

Dauði Baldrs

I can appreciate the ides on this one. You can hear it has potential, but I can't escape the soundscape. For a midi-demo this would be fine. As an album it doesn't work. He should have re-recorded more of this album than he did.

Hliðskjálf

This one works much better. Everything really does work here. Not quite sure how to rank it compared to all the other albums though. I think I need more time with it to properly rank.

Belus

Great comeback to black metal. As far as sound I think this is the best one. It also has a brighter feel, perhaps enhanced by the cover art and lyrics. I really like this one and it was a pleasant surprise to hear after his release. I was very familiar with this album from before.

Fallen

In the same vein as Belus but a step or two down. It's the previous albums little brother. But something makes it not as interesting and at times when I listen to it I can feel it drag every so slightly. I was very familiar with this album from before.

Umskiptar

I love the concept. Start with the full band and the slowly work towards stripping everything down. Cool concept. I also really like the ideas in the songs pretty much throughout. But, as an album this doesn't work. Despite me quite liking so many aspects of it it really drags on and on and on and on... I can't quite put my finger on why it doesn't work as a whole, it just doesn't. I was semi-familiar with this one from before.

Sôl austan, Mâni vestan

I like this one. It reminds me of those cheap CD's you could buy with ambient music mixed with the sounds of thunder, whale sounds or the like (oh the 90's!). I was very familiar with this album from before.

The Ways of Yore

Some nice ideas, more folky than the last album. But its not so interesting to me. I was semi-familiar with this one from before.

Ranking:

I put them in tiers and tried to have some order in within the tiers as well. Everything from Umskiptar and below I can live without. The essential stuff i from Filosofem through Det som engang var.
