Also, Annick Giroux (Cauchemar) made this beautiful tribute. She organised their only gig in Montréal some years ago (I fucking missed it) and was friends with the band.

Pretty sad day, time to spin some Pagan Altar y'all.

So glad I saw that Montreal gig. Lasted 3 hours, too!

Fuck...
First B.B. King, and now this.
it's a grim day.

Terry and I only spoke a few words together but he shook my hand in a firm English way and I was fortunate to catch them twice in concert, both experiences I'll cherish for a lifetime.

Pagan Altar was/is a criminally underappreciated band. My appreciation for them kept on growing.

The music was amazing of course but the vocals elevate the whole into another plane of existence for me. Much like Ronnie James Dio, I felt a connection -call it spiritual or not - when I listened to Pagan Altar because of Terry Jones. Very few singers have this ability, no matter how technically proficient or not they are.

He literally drew me into the Pagan Altar universe every time I heard him.

This is a huge loss for me. My condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad. At least he left behind those three fantastic albums and hopefully the third will still see the light of day.

Yeah, I'm really hoping they had completed vocals on the new one. I know that's often done last though isn't it?

I'm hoping that they had it more or less completed but they just put it on ice when Terry got sick. Strangely, the album was going to be called Never Quite Dead, which now is a appropriately black bit of Python-esque humour, I suppose, especially for a man called Terry Jones. It would be great if there was a finished album. It really would be a light in the black.

Sigh.

I'm glad I had the fortune of witnessing them live with my buddy in 2013. Pagan Altar played a big part in my formative years of getting into metal and since then they've always been special to me.

RIP Terry.

I think we can safely say that's it for the band. Replacing him makes as much sense as replacing Peter Steele in Type O Negative.

Nobody else could possibly be a fit in Pagan Altar. He was a huge part of the band's sound, inimitable. Those albums are unbelievable and I'm also hoping some final stuff will see the light of day, been waiting years.

Anyway, RIP Terry.

Volume I and Mythical & Magical are wonderful albums and this is pretty terrible news. I had no idea there was a new release in the works so at least that's some positive to balance the negative. Vocalists like Jones are really something special and it's hard to imagine the band continuing in his absence.

Shit, shit, shit, a thousand times SHIT. This really sucks.

Rest in Peace Terry. Pagan Altar's one of my favorite doom bands, this is awful.

i was at a punk gig when i read about it. Cast a shadow over the gig for sure. Gutted...
Since i've been listening to metal some artists of note have been lost but losing Terry is the first real major loss for me. Like droneriot said in chat, we have to start getting used to that the biggest legends are getting up there in terms of age and that they are going to start to drop more and more.

I feel a bit like an asshole thinking about the new album. That one song, dance of the vampires sounded so amazing. It was the essence of EVERYTHING that made Pagan Altar great including Terry's part. I do hope for sure that it will still come out. I count myself lucky that i have seen Pagan Altar the one time i could see them.

Rest in peace Terry.... Your contribution to the world and me personally mattered.

It was great to see Pagan Altar at MDF in 2013. Terry was so good that day, as he aged his voice still fit the music very well. RIP.

I never got to see them live, but still love their music. This is sad news indeed since I'm sure the band will not be able to continue without him. Terry had a very unique vocal style which for some reason reminded me a bit of Mark Shelton from Manilla Road. Guess it's that nasally love it or hate it style. Anyhow, time to spin some Pagan Altar for the rest of the evening. R.I.P. Terry Jones.

According to their Facebook page the album has been at mastering stage for a while now, so everything must have been recorded.

He had an immediately recognizable voice which was a perfect fit for their mystical sound. I hope his vocal tracks are done for the long awaited fifth full-length. Should be a glorious send-off. RIP.

Pagan Altar's music had unique atmosphere and this Old British vibe. Most of their charm was Terry Jones voice. We will not forget you, Sir!

Only Mythical & Magical, though? I think all three of their albums are wonderful and, if anything, Mythical... is my least favourite of them. Lords of Hypocrisy might (*might*) be my favourite but the debut has that perfect sound and a truly entrancing, nocturnal atmosphere that's quite unlike anything else.

Tragic news. I fee extremely bad. Never had I have a chance to see Pagan Altar live and now with passing of the Time Lord the hidden Masters of Doom are gone for good. Definitely one of my top favorite Doom bands ever.
May you wander bravely in the worlds beyond.

His vocals were what initially drew me to this band. Truly incomparable. The emotion he brought to every performance was transcendent, and there are no words in any language for how magical his voice was. I'm jealous of those who knew or met him.

The other two records are indeed terrific, but M&M is on a class of its own as far as I'm concerned. It's an incredibly sincere, heartfelt, and down to earth album, and the songwriting and performances in it are out of this world. It might sound very sappy, but I have a very hard time keeping it together when listening to stuff like The Sorcerer when in the right mood. There's just no topping that.

R.I.P. Terry Jones. One of the great metal singers of all time. Such a wonderful, majestic voice that fit so perfectly with Pagan Altar's sound. So glad I got to see them at MDF 2013, I feel lucky for that.

This sucks! I finally got a copy of their first album a couple months ago (along with Revelation's debut; thanks Shadow Kingdom!), and I haven't been listening to it as much as a should. Going to give a spin right now.
