Coming straight off a ban, I thought I'd try something more germaine..

There was a thread on here that mentioned a TV show that used Graveland as part of a story about a dangerous extremist or something. There was also mention of a character in the US version of The Office saying he liked Norwegian Black Metal.

How about a thread detailing these often amusing instances of metal popping up or being casually referenced in the wider world of TV, film, comedy etc. as they happen?

In the current (May 2015) issue of the UK comic VIz, Richard Dawkins appears as a character in a strip called Church of England Capers with Justin Melby the Archbishope of Canterbury. Dawkins stages a 'Godless Satanic Death Metal music whistdrive' across the street from a church jumble sale.

There was a musical episode of an animated series, Kids Next Door, that used two Gwar songs for the musical accompaniment. I always thought that was neat.

http://www.adultswim.com/videos/mr-pickles/pilot/

Then theres that horrible movie Sex Tape where Rob Lowe plays an eccentric boss. Theres one scene where he plays the intro to Angel of Death when entertaining a guest, but it is quickly turned off.

bout all i got for now

Well, there was this ridiculous thing:
https://youtu.be/WgMA3Zh4EQM

Not an actual band or song, obviously. At least I hope not. People in the comments are mentioning someone from Kittie. No idea.

edit: okay technically it's a real song:

There's a scene in Eastbound and Down when the camera pans to a dude in some stands wearing a The Black Dahlia Murder shirt.

I also recently went through Season 1 of Rick and Morty and there were 1 or 2 scenes with metal playing in the background.

Actually, any watchers of the batsu games of the Japanese show Gaki No Tsukai would have heard the occasional flower metal song. I think it's mostly Japanese metal but there is one instance where 'Inside the Winter Storm' by DragonForce is played.

A friend of mine posted this to my facebook. It's from a Cartoon Network show called the Amazing World of Gumball. A character attempts to describe the difference between grindcore, black metal and viking metal. It's pretty funny and surprising to hear those genre tags mentioned in a kid's cartoon. My favorite line is "You know metalheads.... They pretend to be hardcore but they're just hippies who like leather." I laughed at that, because it's sort of accurate. At least for me :)

 I totally remember that commercial. I thought it was funny as hell back in the day, it's lost the charm I'd say.

This morning I was watching the movie Parenthood (the 1989 movie with Steve Martin) and one of the kids, Gary, has some Anthrax and Megadeth stuff in his room plus a bullet belt sitting on his bed.

The only other one I can think of right now is an old episode of the show Bones in which a murder was committed in the 'black metal underground' and one of the characters (Sweets) goes under cover and infiltrates the scene to catch the killer. I remember some of the people in the scene also had sweet stage names like "Murderbreath". I also remember the ending of the episode was super fucking kvlt and set the metal culture back like 20 years.
Spoiler: show
the dude ended up getting killed because he wanted to leave black metal and play in a pop band so his friend murdered him. Because that makes sense.

Lol at DevilDrive being labelled as speed metal. I mean, I get that they probably wanted something that sounded less weird and more extreme, not like groove metal or metalcore, but DevilDriver is a lot more death metal than it is speed metal.

A character in the movie Extract is seen wearing Cephalic Carnage and Mastodon band shirts, as well as constantly promoting his own "melodic grindcore" band call God's Cock.

A movie from 2011 called 30 Minutes or Less, where Danny McBride's character's ringtone was Raining Blood. I think he also had a Napalm Death shirt on at one point

I was also watching Nickelodeon with my son and this commercial came on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_SQjBA23oU

Looks like it could be a scene from a late 90's B-movie or something, but I have no clue what. Anyway, note the Relapse shirt.

The journalist character L.P. Everett on the HBO drama Treme is an avowed metal fan. One of the few instances I've seen on any show of a serious character being genuinely involved in – and expressive of – metal culture and actual metal bands.

The pedal that launched a thousand noise tapes... and probably zero death metal albums.

I haven't seen the FX86 booklet, but I know the DOD Grunge booklet had settings named after bands (i.e., the "Napalm Death setting")... I think there might've been one for The Accused, too. I can't remember distinctly, though.

God, what a great show.

 It really is. In the last episode, Richmond mentions being a part of the "Goth-hippie death metal subculture" or something similar, which is at the very least an amusing way to characterise it...

I vaguely remember something about a Nattens Madrigal poster featuring in The Sopranos at some point, but I really couldn't put my finger on it.

The movie Knights of Badassdom is absolutely full of heavy metal references. It's about this LARP group going on all kinds of wacky, drug-fueled adventures. One of the characters in it is in a metal band, and he describes it by saying "We started out black metal, then we had a sludge phase, and now we're right onto doom metal." The big LARP villain is called King Diamond as well. It's a great film. Highly recommended for all those who are into metal and tabletop gaming/LARP culture.

First thing I had in mind when reading the OP!

Here is the scene at the Eyehategod show:
Youtube: show

There's also a great dialogue in S03E10 , when Everett is at the airport leaving Nola, which goes with something like that:
[hippie chick] : Ain't you disappointed to leave Nola just before the start of the jazz festival?
[L.P. Everett] : Oh no, I don't care. My favorite music is metal... and sailor songs.
[hippie chick stops chating and turns her back on him]

Pretty great show.

some more that I remember:
- the three murderous punks from 'Smokin' Aces' are driving in a car while listening to Trivium
- there is a scene in the movie Silver Linings Playbook where some side character heavily expresses his obsession with 80s Metallica
- In the movie Gamer there's a scene with the kid playing around with his virtual 'homescreen' and you can spot the album covers for Origin - Antithesis and See You Next Tuesday - Parasite in the background
- Goatwhore music on the crime drama Elementary http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/carcas ... lementary/
- The Zombieland movie has an introduction accompagnied by Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls

That's only about 10 seconds of music with barely audible vocals. You'll have better luck just checking the credits for the movie.

Seriously, how was that not mentioned first? Maybe some of us are just getting old.

I do have an obscure one though. On season 3 of The X Files, they break into a house and are running down the stairs and there is a big poster on the wall advertising Metallica's "Upcoming Album" perhaps before the name was dropped (Load). For some reason I never forgot that one.
