Now. Metal has completed its evolution and there are now more great bands in just about every style than at any other point in metal history.

Seconding this. Tons of great new stuff and you always can go back to the classics in case that's what you really want.

I think the entire 90s was the best decade for metal, almost every sub-genre had a interesting moment, from short golden ages, final years of relevance, or stepping stones for the next millennium.

If I had to choose specific years I’d say 1986-1991.

You know, I'd almost agree with those exact dates.

At least, as far as thrash and death metal- the peak of thrash and the classic early days of death metal. By the mid-90's, it seemed, death metal had kind of peaked and everything was all about the scary-clown bands; which I never quite got into (Obviously I do like quite a lot of 90's black metal, but more so than I did at the time though.)

Although...Purists would probably say the "golden age" of Metal would have been the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era of the early 80's, when Heavy Metal started to become more and more distinct from mere hard rock and really evolve, and the earliest stages of the underground speed/thrash metal movement started with Metallica, Slayer, Venom, Exodus, etc.

For me personally, I'd have to say between 1985 through 1991 or 2.

Just because I’m curious, what albums from 85 and 92 makes you want to expand the scope?

Suffocation pioneering brutal death metal
Every year Dir En Grey have been active (or at least 2003 and after since they used to be alt rock)
First era of Rhapsody with the OG line-up

70s. Or 80s. Or 90s. :) That's where it ends for me; early to mid 90s black metal. Other decades are maybe more important to me now, than when I was younger. They had all the big names plus a big bunch of other greats I mostly worship now.

1985 was the year "Bonded By Blood (finally) came out, as well as "Hell awaits," the debut by Megadeth ("Killing is My business...", Anthrax's "Spreading the Disease" and of course "Ride the Lightning" which actually came out at the very end of 1984. 1992 was sort of the transition year where death metal had peaked and the whole black metal thing was just starting.

Allthough listening to metal for over 30 years, i Always have enjoyed metal from the 80's the most. Whatever style it may be.
