Yeah that Vemod cover is magical. Really fits the music too, with how the riffs sound like aurora borealis dancing in the sky. Good shit.

The folktale/obscure/death vibe gives me the idea of a desolate, gloomy record full of ominous atmosphere.

Dragged into Sunlight are, of course, not entirely a black-metal band. My hope is that there's enough black-metal in their sound to justify posting the artwork of their first album nonetheless, without bending the rules too much. It's got a visceral but surreal horror to it - a malevolence and profanity which utterly does justice to their sound, with the artwork and music perfectly entwined in how horrible they are.

The somber, cloudy and rainy vibe is perfect. Rarely does the music and album art match so well.

Big fan of that album and Necrolord's work in general but the perspective of that scythe always threw me off for some reason. It just looked weird to me.

Weird, they don't even have a MA page, I can't find anything about them on google either.

Absolutely love that piece, fitting for such an illustrious album.
I, Voidhanger is so damn good.

I just looked up the artist, his name is Benjamin Vierling and his other work is incredible as well. What a great style.

I guess that I'm a sucker for the Tarot card style imagery haha. I definitely recommend checking that album out though, it has a unique vibe to it.

I probably like Black Metal the least of anyone in this thread, but that cover is amazing. That's the kind of album that makes me want to give them a listen.

Besides it being one of the best black/viking metal records ever, it has one of the best artwork, IMO.
The nature/folky vibe on the album, in combination with the foggy, atmospheric purple..

Another example of cold atmospheric Black Metal, well portrayed by the cover. The keyboards in Grimskalle Trell its what evokes all the norwegian coldness and gives the chills, imo.I Also like the yellow logo, giving some weird but unique feeling for the Black Metal's visual standarts.

When listening to Forgotten Woods, I imagine a cold, windy night in the woods. Rain starts dripping down, wolves start howling while a full moon shines through the trees. This album art looks amazing.

Aldaaron - Suprême Silence

I've come to the conclusion that one of the best recipes for cool black metal artwork is to stick a mysterious robed and hooded figure on it and voila!

I like the warmer colors and the scratched blemishing effect too. Nice underrated French band, check them out.

Lot of great covers in the thread.. Especially the Borknagar, Paysage d'Hiver and Trist examples. On the latter one that's actually an original illustration by Benjamin Konig himself. I'll also echo the support for Luciana Nedelea who is a fantastic artist, I would also add the great Kris Verwimp who has done a shitload of album covers.

Anyway whenever a thread like this pops up I always post this one, even though I'm luke warm on the band - just about a perfect cover IMO:

It's a very unique idea that's for sure. And it's quite easy to pass over the cool detail of the ghostly spirit reflected in the eye.

But with the vast majority of these cool artworks the band logos are almost always not incorporated very well or too overbearing. I get it though.

Almost forgot about this one:

The artwork itself tells the entire story of the album. That, in combination with the bright logo just works for me.

I so agree with this. The metal scene is as full of oversized logos on cover artworks as more popular genres are with full-size self-portrayals of singers/performers.

While I understand your liking of the first two covers, what draws you to that one? It's as amateurish as the music contained on that album, in my opinion.

Not a big fan of the music on this album, but goddamn was I tempted to buy the vinyl. The artwork is just haunting. While using a familiar bleak landscape, they interject themselves onto the scene in an actually novel way. Instead of corpse-paint or other hackneyed black metal tropes, they present themselves in this eerie, memorable garb that seems like a marriage of the ritual costumes of obscure tribal cultures and Appalachia.

The weirdness of it, and well the creepy lake, woodland in the background and the stairs that seems to be from some kind of old building. Black/white.
I am into this stuff :P
And I like the album itself.

Hey guys, how about when you post some artwork with indecipherable logos or no logos at all, you do everyone a favor and just tell us what the band and album are so that we don't have to ask? I know it's nice having people ask you about the things you like, but c'mon.

I've been listening to this tons lately: Aorlhac's "L'esprit des vents." Great album, full of fullbore French BM with hints of folkiness, plus some sort of Swedish-sounding melodics, plus plenty of Taake. I'm not huge on how the logo doesn't really blend very well with the rest of the image (I would prefer it to look much flatter and less shiny/3D looking) but the actual cover painting is gorgeous.
