You guys know this page? It's about Caspar David Friedrich pictures used on various - not only metal - covers, just scroll down the page. E.g. 25 different versions of The Abbey in the Oakwood (from 13 to 38)

For cases where bands use the exact same source for their artwork, I would recommend checking Archives of Khazad-Dum. Unfortunately, it seems the person behind it isn't running it anymore.

I'm still working on this blog :) It's only very rare now.

Dark Night is a hilariously amazing King Diamond cargo cult. The best part part is that it's a Christian band.

Although not identical, the artwork for the Canadian alternative rock band The Tea Party's debut album, Splendor Solis, reminds me of Trouble's Psalm 9.

Seriously though, what's not to like? Aside from his frequent over-reliance on the colour blue, he has a great eye for detail and perspective, and is one of the few metal cover artists who can make the most grotesque subject matter look hauntingly creepy and eye-wateringly beautiful at the same time.

I don't find the perspective aspect that compelling (ItNSE's cover art, for instance - I seriously don't know what he wants with this one. I like medieval-looking, unrealistic perspectives and all but this is just kinda botched and lazy IMO). Above all, though, he just doesn't really have an eye. His artwork's got cool, epic and gothic imagery and all, and he's got good ideas in his head, but he can't be bothered to create art whose elements actually complement each other. He doesn't pay attention to how well they fit, he just wants to stuck in as many cool shit in as possible without taking in consideration their shading, their movement, perspective, form and a lot of other things every artist has to have in mind when drawing stuff. I'm not saying every metal cover artist has to be a top-grade art school graduate or anything, and indeed bad artwork is charming with dirty, in-your-face no-bullshit like Autopsy, but when you have a bunch of naive people praising Necrolord's "talent" when the music is so much more competently epic in scope it just kinda pisses me off. :P

Good catch, although in this case it was the same artist (the legendary Hugh Syme) who did both. He asked if he could re-use the Maiden background which everyone said was fine since it was only used on one version of this Maiden single. He superimposed this pic of his daughter on the cover, replacing one of the skulls with the Nevermore harlequin mask. It was only because of this shortcut method that Nevermore were able to afford him, since normally he would be way out of their price range.

There's an album that has exactly the same art as Mithotyn's King of The Distant Forest

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Forgot what it was ages ago but I still think about how they totally ripped off the whole thing with like exception of the hue

Op said variations on a theme. When I first the beastmaker album I immediately thought of South of heaven. Used to also think this one was similar but it's not passing the eyeball test for me today.

One can understand people involved in the decision of Morbid Angel's cover to not know about Hexenhaus, but those involved with Megadeth eight years later should have known about Morbid Angel:
