Conception from Norway have announced they are releasing a new EP! Original members Arve, Ingar, Tore, and, yes, Roy Khan are onboard for this project. They have a PledgeMusic page up in support of the release. No music samples yet, just a short video teaser of Roy and Tore announcing the release. Curious to see how their songwriting as a band has changed, as their last album, Flow, came out in 1997, over 20 years ago; and also how long this reformation will last, and if it will spawn more than just the EP! This comes off the heels of Roy Khan releasing a solo single on YouTube a few weeks back.

PledgeMusic page: https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/conception-ep

Sweet. I've only got Flow but anything that gets Khan back in the game is good.

Thought these guys would never reform! Khan is king on those Conception albums (still haven't warmed up much to Flow). In Your Multitude's one of my favorites, so I'll be playing that thing immediately.

Interested for sure. I love Parallel Minds, so hopefully this at least can exist in the same room as that album.

Awesome! Tore will forever be one of my favorite guitarists. Can't wait to hear what comes out of this.

After reading about the death of Tim Calvert, this is the sort of news I wanted to hear, for sure! I absolutely love Parallel Minds and In Your Multitude, so I'm really excited for this!

Flow was harder for me to get into since it has a really corny 90s rock vibe (the band I always think of for some reason is Econoline Crush lol, probably not a very good comparison, but whatever) but honestly, it's got some great songs and Khan, as usual, sings some great hooks. The chorus on the title track, for example, is so good. Just great pop songwriting on that one.

I was always partial to Parallel Minds (that title track tho, also Silent Crying is one of the best metal ballads ever) but I think my favourite at this point is In Your Multitude. Every single song on that one is a winner, as far as I'm concerned. The Last Sunset is probably my least favourite with some tracks that are just a little boring, in my opinion, but songs like Fairy's Dance, Bowed Down With Sorrow and The Last Sunset are absolute killers. I fell in love with Khan during his Kamelot days, but he was seriously amazing from the start. And of course the rest of the band are no slouch, either.

Since I absolutely love Conception, I'm setting my my expectations very, very low. If I expect "modern" and "mature" rock (=downtuned chugging), I might get pleasantly surprised.

Can't say I enjoy Flow, so I'm hoping they'll definitely bring back the heavy riffs mixed with flamenco guitars - anything that will resemble their first three albums will be good to me. I just wonder how Khan will sound. Didn't he damage his voice during his last years in Kamelot or something?

I know the song he just released last month was pretty soft but his voice sounded pretty brilliant on it. I'm honestly not acquainted with Conception, I think I'll fix that today.

Decide for yourself; here are three songs from their three earlier albums.

I thought Flow was very good. Not as good as their middle two albums, but still great. I also think that Roy is going to sound just fine. There probably won't be those crazy high notes that he used to hit in 90's, but I won't miss them. That being said, I'm very excited that they are back :) I hope that the new music will great, as I have already pre-ordered the signed EP.

Flow used to be unambiguously my least-favorite album of theirs, but honestly, while I still love all their material, Flow has definitely held up the best over the years. The quality of the hooks is undeniable, the songwriting is varied, and the whole thing is just so cohesive and polished and well put-together that time flies by when I'm listening to it. Sure, it's not as heavy or metal-oriented as their first three albums - but really, at this point, I don't care. It's good.

Some short teaser here: https://www.facebook.com/conceptionmusi2/videos/1673455392731197/

Not really revealing much though. I assume Khan won't stay in that vocal pitch the entire time!

Well, I'm listening to the two new tracks (well, three if you count the intro) right now and they're very, very good, in my estimation.

The sound is very much a continuation of where they left off with Flow, but even weirder and more atmospheric. Not particularly "metal," but I don't mind that one bit when the melodies are so compelling.

Feather Moves, in particular, is fantastic. The whole song thrives off a tricky 5/4 syncopated groove that subtly changes as the song goes on, with a slow build-up and tons of layers.

New songs here:

Good to hear Khan at it again, but these songs remind me a bit too much of Flow which I'm just not a fan of. I'd love to hear some heavier riffs mixed with flamenco bits again.

Yeah, after repeated listens this is about as good as I could have hoped. I wish Tore's guitar were a bit louder in the mix in Grand Again, but that's a minor gripe. This is Conception, through-and-through - I had forgotten how much I missed their sound.

Here's hoping they don't go missing for another 20 years.

I'm actually really digging the "Flow" vibes, I thought that was a fantastic album (along with every other album Conception's done). I'm absolutely in love with these new tracks and I'm glad I donated to their campaign. Pretty excited for my EP to arrive, I actually got a notification that it shipped a couple days ago!

Roy sounds like he's in really good shape, he sounds better than he did on "Poetry for the Poisoned".

EDIT: and now I have an email saying that shipping notification was an error. Oh well. I'm patient. lol

Definite buy (pre-ordered ages ago!) and I'm very happy with what I'm hearing.

Both of those songs are impeccable. God, Khan's got an amazing voice. So glad he's back. The music is quite fluid, mystical prog stuff - pretty cool.

Great writing and Khan's voice is as good as classic Kamelot. Nice to hear him again!

Just wow. Good 'ole Khan is still the king (no pun intended) of sounding dramatic without overdoing it, and the songs aren't half bad, either.

After spinning '"Grand Again'' several times I can safely say this has grown on me - it does sound like a continuation of Flow but to me it has much more punch than the majority found on that album. I could do without the vocal effects but Khan still sounds incredible, especially on that majestic chorus. What a voice.

Honestly not a fan of the production though. Loud. I'll have to get the EP on vinyl and hope its a bit more pleasant sounding. Why do producers think brickwalling is a good thing? Grand Again is the worst offender of the two by far. Granted its not Death Magnetic but dang.

Yeah, this is cool stuff. Glad they were able to get it together. I haven't heard a band in this style that I enjoyed for some time now.

I got the EP in the mail yesterday. It's pretty good, but only listened to it once or twice so far. Khan sounds a lot better than he did on his last Kamelot album, like he's less tired or something.

Nice. I can tell from the singles that he sounds a lot less tired on this EP. The dude really was just burned out, I guess he needed a break. Maybe touring constantly isn't good for him either. I'm glad he's found peace and has found his way back to metal, I've sorely missed his voice.

The EP has leaked!

EDIT: I dig it. Quite different from the previous Conception outputs - it's more of an atmospheric lightweight proggy record than anything riff-y - basically what Flow could have been if it was actually good. :P Khan still sounds incredible and I'm glad he's back. So far my favorite has to be the title track which is about as dark as ''In Your Multitude'' (the track) - such a haunting ballad that's full of emotion.

Well, since I love "Flow", I might end up thinking of this as the greatest EP ever, lol. I'll attempt to wait until my copy actually arrives to listen to it, but do I have the willpower to hold out until then? We'll see...
