No one mention Adorior yet? Author of Incest was a vicious slab, and Melissa’s an awesome vocalist.

Battle Beast are currently one of my favourite metal acts, and Noora Louhimo one of my favourite vocalists

Straight for the Heart
Speed and Danger
Touch in the Night (super poppy but awesome)

I always thought Lullacry had everything to be a lot bigger than they were, but it never really worked out. I think Vol. 4 in particular is a great album.

Alright Tonight
Love, Lust, Desire

I'd heard the name Avatarium thrown around a lot, and reviewed their latest album last year. I was really impressed, and swiftly acquired the rest of their catalogue.

The Starless Sleep
Girl with the Raven Mask

Gotta throw in a shout-out to Surgikill. Vanessa Nocera actually splits vocal duties with some other members, but she's also the primary lyric writer. She's been involved in several other projects, but this one really knocked my socks off. Sanguinary Revelations was my number two album for 2016

Also quite like Dawn from Detente.

I'd like to hear more women do King Diamond style vocals, perhaps with a North American tone like the drinking woman in Will & Grace.

As it happens, Female fronted metal made up a fair slice of my Best Albums of 2017, which had the aforementioned, and thoroughly incomparable, White Skull out on top with their 'Will of the Strong'. Highly recommended on all levels. Crystal Viper (also mentioned already) were also on my list along with:

Jenner from Serbia. Stone cold precision thrash with fantastic production. I don’t think there is even a double-kick out of place, or a guitar chug held too long on their album. The vocals soar effortlessly over and above the ‘Belladonna’ range with a clean power unmatched by the majority of male singers. A debut too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzEweLQU5nk

Brazil's Breakout. If you like a more trad/retro take on things, you can't go past it. Definitely for fans of Satan's Hallow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHxJMong0uc

In a similar style, but more 'over the top', are Fire Strike, also from Brazil.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSY0y6qdwbw

Sanhedrin from the US. I found this band hard to pin point to a style. They're traditional metal... of sorts, but slightly doomy and totally rockin' at the same time.

Mystik from Sweden released a demo earlier this year. Three kickass women with the drummer from Antichrist. Fantastic vocals as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7SgPek_o3s

Chevalier, a speed metal band from Finland with great vocals and riffs. They released an EP last year and have released a demo this year:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbPiLvgDmAE

Lizzies from Spain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAjCxUrz-8Y

The Oath with Johanna Sadonis from Lucifer and Linnéa Olsson (ex-Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures etc.). Somewhat doomy and psychedelic metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt6xCf9Iivk

Maggot Heart, a solo project of the aforementioned Linnéa Olsson, but more of a rock/post-punk sound:

Ice Age.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CGSc-ysJWs

Quote:
As one of the more acclaimed thrash bands in Europe during the 1980s, it was nothing short of criminal that the all-female lineup ICE AGE never got to release any material except via their classic demo tapes.

Released the "debut" last year. Like I said elsewhere, it sounds like the best Megadeth album since Youthanasia.

Surprised Indiscipline and Nervosa have been missed thus far:

Indiscipline on MA.
Image

Indiscipline is a more traditional Heavy Metal styled band from Brazil. Their debut is solid, with some clear highlights. You'll get clean vocals on this one. Personal favorite: Take It or Leave It

Nervosa on MA.
Image

Nervosa is a Thrash Metal band also from Brazil. I only have Victim of Yourself, which is another solid release, if lacking only in breadth or variety. Choruses on this one follow the AC/DC variety, with harsh vocals and a lot of energy.

I learned of both of these bands only last year.

Here to mention Powers Court; riff-screaming heavy/power metal with subtle groove influences (as subtle as you can get before you're barely there) and an incredible vocalist with a broad range.

The first band that came to mind was Black Road from Chicago. They're good friends that play psychedelic doom and I was honestly surprised to see them end up on the Archives.
https://blackroadchicago.bandcamp.com/a ... ck-road-ep

Doomstress is worth noting as they're fronted by a transwoman who also was the bassist/vocalist for Project Armageddon. Bit more on the traditional doom side.
https://doomstress.bandcamp.com/album/s ... nd-rite-cd

Witchcryer is another excellent traditional doom metal band from Texas.

Good to see Jenner and Book of Wyrms have been mentioned already! Two glorious bands that emerged more recently.

However you all deserve to get banned for omitting Chastain. :-D
If Doro is the Queen of Metal as someone said earlier Leather Leone is the Empress! Kate French who replaced her in Chastain is pretty excellent too imo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJxx7Gbi_iA

Somewhat similar to Jenner (melodic thrash/speed/heavy Metal) are Meanstreak. Great songwriting and awesome vocals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvA7VlhUITc

Then we have Rage of Light, a band that I've discovered just a few weeks ago. I suck at describing music with words, so please go ahead and check it out for yourselves. There's plenty of synths and programming...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6xBhv21kEE

Diabulus in Musica - basically the Spanish version of Epica. However they're no simple copycats, there's enough skilled songwriting and personality. And Zuberoa Aznarez - awesome melodic name, awesome melodic and full voice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWMIblUWL14

Tears of Magdalena are a very obscure Finnish symphonic band. Their only album so far is worth a try however. Really pleasing listening experience and sound if you ask me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=904MPQweZ2c

Also Finnish and rather well known by now: Amberian Dawn. Love both Heidi and Capri. Catchiest songs ever - maybe pop Metal but GREAT pop Metal!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYJ6DlYiRNw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C09CR4DVaSw

Danmark has Death rides a Horse who provide some ripping heavy/doom with a powerful and unique singer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHJcM45Ie9A

Phrenetix from Lithuania play female fronted thrash at its best, not much else to say here.
https://phrenetix.bandcamp.com/album/fear

Blackthorn from Russia - extreme symphonic Metal in the vein of Cradle of Filth and Dimmu. Fantastic (and may I say sexy) clear and harsh vocals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlZsgFVYirw

And of course the household names you all know and love like Delain, Nightwish, Arch Enemy ... ...

Thundermother - hard rock, AC/DC-like band from Sweden
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APSV2-1rvPM

Semblant - symphonic metal from Brazil in the Epica vein
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIedr_9_9hA

Oceans of Slumber - prog metal with a black female singer. IDGAF if they got excluded from the archives
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eTq2WiAbBI

Shadow - obscure Japanese metal band that did 90s In Flames as well as 90s In Flames
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23gkhdJqULg

Undead Corporation - managed to make me like metalcore. Never thought that would happen.

I know they're old hat, but no mention of ZnöWhite here?

There's also Life Cycle, which sounds like a crusty hybrid of "Morbid Tales"-era Celtic Frost and Deviated Instinct:

Surprised no one has mentioned Benedictum. I think Beast In the Field is a vivid representation of Veronica Freeman's vocals. She even does the harsh guttural vocals at the end of the song, quite the tour de force she is

SPEAKING of the Well... Pretty cool stoner doom from Texas with a female singer/bass player. Lisa Alley is actually my favorite female singer currently. Her tone is deeper than most female singers I'm familiar with, even in stoner doom, and she just sounds fantastic. Her vocals are typically drenched in reverb which really adds a droney affect to it that is really cool. Apparently the (male) guitarist does vocals too, they may sometimes sing together, but I always have a much easier time discerning Lisa's vocals than his, and I think it would be fairer to say she's the lead vocalist and he's the back-up vocalist. I saw them live with Beastmaker in Fresno and it was a great show.

Here's the song I think showcases Lisa Alley's vocals the best:

The Well - One Nation

There is also the absolutely obligatory plug for one of my favorite bands Lordian Guard, a duo conststing of guitarist/keyboardist Bill Tsamis (also guitarist of Warlord) and his then wife Vidonne. Musically this band is amazing with Bill's epic songwriting, but Vidonne is also a huge part of their appeal as she has an incredibly unique voice, I have never heard another singer with a voice like hers in any genre.

Lordian Guard - War in Heaven

I will also mention Black Knight, an 80s heavy/power metal band from Canada. Their "main" release was the 1985 EP Master of Disaster, consisting of 4 tracks with lead singer Lori Wylde (and an additional track with (male) bassist Glen (The Hammer) Hoffman on vocals). It has been reissued a few times over the years with many bonus tracks, most recently in 2016. A lot of the songs feature male vocalists however (including Aaraigathor, which is the one featuring their bassist on vocals, and although not in the spirit of this particular thread, is mandatory listening). My favorite Black Knight song with Lori on vocals is no doubt Warlord's Wrath.

On top of her voice being killer, she's also a sweetheart. Few actual friends within the scene took the time to check up on me after my mother died in 2013, but Mallika messaged me (she's good friends with one of my closer friends) directly. Her side project Castrator is also a damn solid beast in its own right.

On a similar note, I have to bring Som Pluijmers into this. While I'm not keen on her current band Your Chance to Die (which she co-fronts with Missi Avila), her guttural delivery elevated Cerebral Bore's Maniacal Miscreation from solid BDM into one of my favorite releases ever.

Happy International Women's Day!

My favorite female-fronted or female-centric metal bands are Edenbridge, Seraphim, Epica, Babymetal, Nightwish, Deathrabbits, Xandria, Arkona, Fruitpochette, Ladybaby, Frost Tears, Dalriada, Mary's Blood, Akphaezya and Liv Moon. Among bands that don't exist anymore, I have to point out the greatness of After Forever and give a shout-out to Unexpect. Before they sold out, I also liked Within Temptation. I usually like female vocalists in metal bands because they complement aggressive music with grace. It's also fun to see women attend metal shows which doesn't happen often enough where I live.

I've been into Unleash the Archers lately. Canadian power/death metal with one of the best vocalists of this type I've heard in a while. Brittany Slayes reminds me of a female Bruce Dickinson, if he were Canadian.

Well, seeing as it was initially international working women's day, and was basically invented by communists before it got consumed by mattel using it as a chance to sell barbies.. Then surely Jucifer's excellent Stalingrad concept album, "There is no land beyond the Volga" is a pretty appropriate choice! Amber's guitars on this album are completely nuts. Not entirely convinced on much of their discography, but this album is a huge slab of doom.

just a random track off the thing.

Night Viper is a criminally underrated heavy/speed band from Sweden. Their debut was only okay, but their follow-up, Exterminator was my #1 album of 2017:

Yeah, Night Viper is a cool heavy/speed/early thrash deal. Plus the world needs more killer female drummers outside of Japan (where the majority seem to reside).

I should participate in adding to this, hell my fav of 2017 was the Lovebites debut (all female Japanese power metal band), but I've got so little free time...

If Doro is the Queen of Metal as someone said earlier Leather Leone is the Empress! Kate French who replaced her in Chastain is pretty excellent too imo.

Leather Leone is the greatest frontwoman in metal hands down, absolutely adore her voice on all the early work, and from what I've heard since she's rejoined she still sounds fantastic, such a beautiful combination of melody and gruffness, just perfect.

Y'all should check out Znich, folk metal from Belarus. Great mix of Korpiklaanish drinking songs with also a more serious side. All in all, quite like Arkona but with a rougher quality to it.

This is one of the best efforts of their female singer "Ne Syachy Moi Tatulka", which means "Don't Beat My Dad". An oddly positive sounding song for its title:

Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella.

Ok, ok, but I'm utterly disgusted that Lita Ford hasn't been mentioned.

Continuing the “I can’t believe this wasn’t mentioned yet” motif, I don’t think there can be any conversation about women in metal bands, especially in doom and psychedelic rock where they’ve ruled the realm for particularly the last 10-12 years or maybe even more, without including Witch Mountain. They’ve had two of most hypnotically entrancing and charismatic vocalists in the genre today with both Uta Plotkin and now Kayla Dixon, and have substantially elevated the band’s already awesome music both on record and onstage. Unquestionably one of my most anticipated albums of hopefully this year.

The band’s discography, including two separate singles with Kayla following the “Mobile of Angels” album with Uta, her last with them: https://witchmountain.bandcamp.com/

Kayla is also now the vocalist of Dress the Dead too, replacing Peter Dolving. Their first song with her here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wTUDZA6EbI4

A very honorable mention to Robin Mazen, bassist of the aforementioned Derketa and Castrator, who I’m sure most of us have purchased merch from at a gig at some point or another over the years. She’s everywhere! Looking forward to new Gruesome, too.

I did like Sacrilege (https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sacrilege/3145) from the obscure trash thread. Cool vocals!
