A couple more that I thought of... Pretty much anything involving Maureen Murphy seems to be pretty good. She shows a strong, husky voice on the Second Grave material in particular but her new work with Benthic Realm aims for a similar sound. https://secondgrave.bandcamp.com/ https://benthicrealm.bandcamp.com/ I also have to mention Holy Grove from the Portland area. Their debut was one of my top picks for 2016 and makes for some catchy doom. https://holygrove.bandcamp.com/album/holy-grove |

This band (the first two albums especially) is utterly essential. One of my fave 80's speed/thrash bands in fact. SubRosa is a female fronted band from (of all places) Salt Lake City who have released some really powerful, heavy doomish type stuff- it's three females and I think two guys (bass and drummer), and they are a bit distinctive in that they use a string section (cello/violin). But it's not what you think- it actually adds to the somber, deep heaviness rather than distracts from it. |

I just briefly scanned the previous posts so my apologies if any of this stuff has been already been posted by someone else, but I'm going to take this opportunity to share some kick-ass female-centric metal from my neck of the woods over here in South Korea! Of course, this is by no means exhaustive, just off the top of my head- Kryphos https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Kryphos/3540337373/ If you'd like to check out a female-fronted Korean DSBM band, this is a relatively new-ish group to come out from the shadows. They've also got an EP from 2011, the lyrics of which are from some of the letters that Dead from Mayhem wrote before he committed suicide (although this was recorded before the female vocalist, Kalte, joined the band). https://youtu.be/oX5RPWjhphs Shadows of Black Candlelight https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Shadows_of_Black_Candlelight/3540424680/ If you want something a little more mysterious compared to Kryphos (see above), then maybe this might be your style in terms of female-fronted black metal from Korea. This band also features H. Navi who is not only the mastermind behind several other bands (including the amazing ritual/ambient black metal project Aek Gwi), but is also a prolific artist whose done a bunch of work for other bands. A digital copy of their latest full-length is also on sale on their Bandcamp page for a mere $444 USD!! https://shadowsofblackcandlelight.bandcamp.com/album/history-of-resurrection-chant-of-necromancy Traitor https://youtu.be/Ezo6krCdX4s (Fun fact: I was actually at this show! I'm sure I pop up at other times, but you can see me (for example) at around 6:00, I'm the dorky white dude wearing a black hat and crushing that cold can of beer stage left) If death metal is more your thing, then feel free to check out Traitor from Busan. Vicious vokills, plenty of thrashin' and groovin', etc. I don't know if they've recorded anything yet (hence why they're not on the Archives), but keep an eye out for them! Ishtar https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ishtar/3540310589 Do you like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, etc.? It's not really my thing, but if you like excellent operatic female vocals and symphonic power metal then maybe this is for you! Sadly, they've broken up, but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy their music! https://youtu.be/Fk9R8XIeQJc Zikbakguri (직박구리) https://youtu.be/UPJsTpRW8uw This is another new band to emerge onto the Korean metal scene. Do you like deathcore? Check them out! It's not really my thing, but they're still a really fun band to see live! I'm sure there's lots of other Korean metal bands I could list that include female members (Dark Mirror ov Tragedy, Silent Eye, Sinstein, HADES the Violet, etc.), but like I said, this is just off the top of my head. Enjoy!! |

Since this thread was still on the front page I just remembered another band that I assume a lot of people have missed, Zed Yago. It was a German heavy metal band formed in 1985 by the blues singer Jutta Weinhold. And boy, their two first albums (especially the second one) are fantastic. Apparently they disbanded and reformed under a different name, but I haven't heard that. Just take a look at this incredible video. Well ... not really, but the song is damn good! https://youtu.be/3GgC7439Y4k Full album here: https://youtu.be/ks31zt0CsKQ |

Resurrecting this thread to share the magic of a one-woman band from Portland called Grigax, whose debut Life Eater is entrancing. Elements of drone, sludge, blackgaze and post-black abound, but overall this has a really unique vibe, and is massively infectious. Favorite songs are the almost Cascadian-sounding 'Iron Quill' and the completely chilling 'Nascita'.

Awesome, I've been meaning to bump this thread. The Inferi guitarist Mike Low is in this super melodic black metal band fronted by his wife, one Emily Low. They're a very pleasant listen, Oubliette, nothing really menacing or "evil," not remotely necro, but very well done, catchy, and sort of dreamy. https://oubliette.bandcamp.com/album/apparitions They also have a cover of "Thorns of Crimson Death" that's so spot-on it's uncanny. They nailed the guitar tone and atmosphere. https://oubliette.bandcamp.com/track/th ... tion-cover |

^I was just looking at that band the other day, need to check them out. I know people mentioned Onielar before, but one of my favorite go-to songs whenever I want something just really fucking awesome is Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult's ...To Necromancy. Aside from the song just shredding and having incredible riffs, the vocals are spine chilling and build up to something completely inhuman by the end of the song. I remember back in the old days when DNS only had 1 album and MA was new, I listened to them for a few years before ever actually looking them up and figuring out the main member was female. Also she totally makes the latest Bethlehem album. Best DNS song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr8jUvMCPOw Bethlehem album: https://bethlehem.bandcamp.com/album/bethlehem-luxus "Modgud" of Zmrok Black metal band from Belarus (black metal from Belarus always rules btw) who had a 12 year hiatus put out a sweet album last year that I really need to listen to more. Basically same situation as DNS, female guitar/vocalist doing fairly relentless black metal. Just noticed it's name your price on BC, buying! https://possessionproductions.bandcamp.com/album/achviara |

I've been a Subrosa fan for a few years but just saw them live for the first time about a month ago. Their live show was...beautiful. My eyes actually welled up a little bit on a few occasions. I've emailed Rebecca a couple times to ask about the meaning behind a couple of the songs and she was so forthcoming with information. It's always nice to have that interaction. |

Here are a few that come to mind right away ... Really enjoy this band from Greece. If only they would pull together to get their debut released ... I can never forget the great Elizabeth Toriser. Her presence/embellishment is always significant, even if she is not necessarily the "center": A favorite "one and done" band of mine: The Latvian Princess, what a beauty. She also went on to lend some vocals to Neglected Fields: Another female bassist lending her talents to some great releases. Rumble on, Morrigan ... |

According to their MA profile, all their current and past members are male...? But yeah, I would LOVE for them to finally put out that debut. But, despite what their status says on their MA profile, I'm not even convinced they're still active. Unless you have some kind of inside information I'm not privy to. |

I don't know what makes a band female-centric exactly, but Messa is a doom/rock band from France (I think) which is fronted by a female vocalist and she does a great job. She has a bit of that dreamy vibe you might recognize from something like Jex Thoth, but she sounds almost like Nicole Hummel (Zola Jesus) during her more powerful moments. The music is also a little bit more dynamic than the occult doom stuff you might expect with some sections taking dark ambient, jazz and even black metal influences. |

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as I just made a recent discovery: BlackLab (facebook, MA). A Japanese doom / stoner metal band comprised of two women. There is Yuko Morino on guitars and vocals (she also simulates bass by playing her guitar through a bass amp and using an octaver pedal), and Chia Shiraishi on drums. They released their debut album, Under the Strawberry Moon, in February of this year. I don't know if "strawberry moon" is some kind of Japanese idom similar to blood moon... I bring this up because to me the phrase makes me think of psychedelic rock on the somewhat lighter side, HOWEVER this album is crushing and raw doom. Really good shit. The vocals switch from cleans to growls, to more shriek-ish type vocals. All styles work really well. I think the only weakness is in the guitar solos. The riffs are on point though. The drumming is great as well. They're actually remixing the album and releasing it under the name Under the Strawberry Moon 2.0, and giving it a much wider release than the original release, due July 20, 2018. Here is an article with the first track of the remixed version streaming: Click Of course with the remixing, it's not as raw, but that track is still quite good. |

I'm really enjoying the new Nervosa album. I had always been "meh" on them before as a thrash metal fan, but "Downfall of Mankind" is a big step up in my opinion. Very much inspired by early Sepultura, but it has it's own unique sound to it. https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/N ... ind/705080 |

Love their sound, love Aileen's vocals. You know what happened to them? They haven't released anything since their debut. Years ago, on Facebook, they had a post that declared "Pharaoh is Coming", but that was it. I heard a member of the band passed away recently, I wonder if that spelled the end of the band. They were frigging great in my book. They had a really beautiful, haunting, sort of dream-like sond with their guitars.
