On this Nazi issue, who gives a fuck? Morgan's granddad was German and fought in WWII so he has an interest in Nazi Germany like millions of other people do. I have over 30 books on the 3rd Reich, does that make a Nazi? No, I'm just interested in a fascinating period of history. Even if they had Nazi sympathies, that's their choice to do so like they can be Christian or Islamic fundamentalists if they choose. Lemmy was open about his interest in the 3rd Reich and amassed a huge collection of Nazi memorabilia, didn't seem to remember any fuss there!

No, unfortunately not. Tiger I and Silent Night are the slow ones but slower and not up tempo like Blonde Beast.

Regarding Panzer Division Marduk: It's fun, quite enjoyable while it's on. However, in terms of extremity and, much more importantly, memorability, it's lacking. It's quite easy listening in terms of production, so I don't feel that it captures that 'battle' quality and everything after-2004 and, especially, on Nightwing and previous albums is just much, much better. It's a shame it's their flagship album because it's only representative of a snippet of the band's sound.

Looking forward to the new one! Frontschwein was a really interesting and well-researched take on the WWII theme. It that respect - and just about everything else - it was an improvement on Panzer Division Marduk.

I remember Morgan saying that he wanted to make the 'Reign In Blood of black metal' in terms of extremity so I suppose they achieved it in that respect. A very simple album, the riffs are basically power chords and simple tremolo picking riffs. It introduced what I call 'panzer style riffing' to their arsenal which they have mixed up with other riffing techniques since that album. I think Mortus has brought a lot to the band in terms of song writing especially their more diverse material. My favourites will always be Heaven Shall Burn and Nightwing. The perfect mix of atmosphere, brutality, speed and song craft.

I guess "mid-tempo and plodding" is the new "fast as fuck".

Song was kinda boring and not very interesting. Felt like any black metal band ever could have written that in 10 minutes.

Yeah this is not even close to fast in regards to Marduk.

i wouldn't call this mid-tempo nor plodding either. it's pretty uptempo. i dig it. wouldn't want an album of songs like that, but it's a nice punk as fuck tune. also sounds like there's a bit more distortion on the guitar this time around, which is great since my biggest (and only real) complaint with frontschwein was how clean that sounded

Perhaps I was being hyperbolic, its not the fastest song. Though I feel "plodding" is equally hyperbolic.

Also there's a lyric video now.

Maybe it's just Youtube, but the mix is really lacking low end. The bass is almost nonexistent which is very unlike them.

Sounds like they devolved into black thrash, so to speak.
Nothing wrong with that, but it's not what I expected, nor what I wanted.

I don’t know how to feel about this song. It’s....solid. I just like my black metal aggressive and this is a little light for my taste. Being Marduk though Im still buying it

I don't hate the track as much as some, I don't love it either. Overall I'd say the first peak into the album has been disappointing though. I'm glad its not just a blastfest ordinary Marduk song though. Sometimes they tend to regress to that style. I always liked their other stuff better. Plus 20 years later it also sounds dated when they try to do Nightwing-esque fast songs.

Some have commented on the lyrics, finding them bad. Many seem to think they are about werewolves which, if that was the case, the lyrics would be awful. However knowing the historical context I'm fine with the lyrics dealing with the German resistance force plan from the war.

This is one of those songs that could work well in the context of the album but one that I don't think I will enjoy that much on its own.

Quite frankly, even though Marduk is one of my favourite bands, that track is literally the worst thing I've ever heard from them. I really hope the rest of the album is better.

i'm sure the rest of the album will be different. mortuus-era albums are usually pretty varied, yet still cohesive imo

That's a good description. Varied but cohesive :-)

I've been listening to Werwolf many times now and it's growing on me. The thing I like the best about it is the inclusion of the siren.

I'm surprised there isn't much discussion about Marduk going. I figure the whole Stockhom Slaughter situation didn't get much attention outside of Sweden so I'll elaborate:

As many know, a left-wing Swedish newspaper had this crusade against Marduk going, they wanted to remove them from the fest alon with Taake. The venue surrendered and asked the fest organization to cancel both bands, but the crew at Stockholm Slaughter told them to fuck off, as did Marduk, and a different venue was booked - which was quite pricey. This last-minute venue was kept secret until the last moment. Here's the Marduk statement:

Quote:
Marduk wrote:

On April 29, despite the outraged bleating from the enemies of black metal, Marduk Official and Taake (Official) performed in a sold-out Stockholm venue. Both bands wish to thank the Stockholm Slaughter promoter, Vlad of Death Disco Productions, for going above and beyond in the face of overwhelming adversity. But above all, our heartfelt gratitude to you – the fans – whose unwavering support ultimately made this a highly worthwhile experience, not to mention at all possible.

Let this little escapade serve as a reminder of how outside interference in black metal matters should be approached: unity in defiance, with neither apology nor compromise.

Figured there'd be some interest about this, I also think Marduk and the fest truly deserve some credit. I find metalheads are very prone to judge a band that bends over to the agenda of these antifa types, but in the few instances when bands take a defiant stance and tell these people to fuck off hardly anybody comments on it. I believe this should come to light for those who didn't know. Such big names like Stockholm Slaughter and Marduk had a lot to lose by taking this stance (let alone by releasing an album like Viktoria) in the current climate, yet they did it anyway. I sincerely hope more bands and organizers follow their lead, the scene would certainly need it.

Now, to comment on the music - Equestrian Bloodlust is fucking killer. Less than a month left for Viktoria and I can hardly wait. I predict this album will rank pretty high on this year's highlights.

I'm not saying that the members of Marduk are National Socialists, but being a National Socialist is slowly becoming less and less stigmatised

I'm so glad to see the festival, Taake and Marduk doing the only thing that works with these people: Tell them to fuck off and keep moving forward. If you spend time and energy apologizing or yielding any territory, they will seize on it and demand more.

Regarding the two songs.
Werwolf was a nice intense piece, but nothing spectacular. The lyrics were also lazy. They could have done much more with the werewolf imagery and make the connection to the German operation less obvious.

Equestrian Bloodlust was much better. Reminded me of Frontschwein in a very good way. Around 0:40 it does something I absolutely hate in metal, when everything stops for a second. It's so cheesy. Enslaved did that in Vetranótt too, and it is the only thing that makes me cringe in an othwerwise perfect song.

It's interesting to see how Marduk basically just moved on forward whilst Watain, who portray themselves as such bad boys, tells everyone they don't give a fuck in a press statement - then kicks Set Teitan out of the band because of the controversy

It tells us something about the different character of the bands...

Guys, you probably didn't know this, but it's quite ironic that June 22nd, i.e. today, the day when this album is released, is celebrated in my country as Anti-Fascist Struggle Day. Not saying that Marduk are a Nazi band, I believe they're just interested in the subject of WW2, it's just that I know they had problems with ANTIFA cancelling their concerts.

Anyway, with that out of the way, what did you guys think of this album? I haven't gotten to listening to it yet, I will later on.

Just listened to it today and...uh...not very good. Just kinda there. Bland. Of course I'll be listening to it more in the next few days but the new Funeral Mist is much, much better for this style of black metal. The vocals are better, the drumming is better, songwriting is more interesting, etc.

I have a feeling Mortuus didn't have nearly as much input as the past few albums since he was focusing more on his own band. Viktoria still has time to grow on me but I don't have high hopes. Frontschwein totally ripped so it's a bit of a letdown.

Correcting "as fuck" to "at best"

Same for the music, never liked Marduk and this didn't change that a bit.

Meh. It wasn't bad, but it kinda came and went without leaving much impression. It's not nearly as good as Frontschwein.
