When members of a recognized band go their own way, and each claims to have the rights to continue the legacy; in most cases the status of the band remains "Disputed" until their differences are resolved by themselves or resolved in a court (Immortal for example). However, there are some little bands that never find a solution and each party continues giving concerts, releasing albums or demos with the same name and logo. Most of them will someday look for a legal solution, but while that solution comes, there are albums released under the same name by different bands. How to update information about those bands and albums.

The only example I can think of this happening with is Gorgoroth, and I don't know if the Gaahl/King camp ever put out an album after the split? It seems most of the time when this sort of thing happens, they add something to the name in order to distinguish themselves (such as Venom Inc. or Entombed A.D.). It would be interesting to hear some other examples of what you're talking about though, because I don't know of it being all that common.

Saxon had this issue in the late 90s. They fired Graham Oliver, who in turn hooked up with Dobby Dawson. They then registered Saxon as a trademark, and it took something like five years in court to sort out. Dawson and Oliver now go by Oliver/Dawson Saxon.

Apart from the previously mentioned bands, the Queensrÿche debacle between Geoff tate and the other bandmembers come to mind. Tate's Queensrÿche releasing Frequency Unknown and the other member's Queensrÿche releasing the self-titled album.

Name disputes are the most depressing aspect of the music industry, if only because it reveals how much of a chore it's become for these people. The whole thing just reeks of sad, desperate people that clearly don't enjoy this anymore but have no idea what to do with their lives. Kinda makes me glad to still have a day job.

This one straight up boggles my mind. Most of these disputes are based on names that are commercially successful or at least recognizable to a casual listener. Is fucking Tank really that big of a meal ticket?
