I really hope the new Tool album is called The Best of Tool or Tool's Greatest Hits just to screw with people.

Sheavy already did that joke with their last album.

Continuum - Designed Obsolescence (February 22)

A song has already been released. Sounding good to me, but if you're not into the Unique Leader type of technical death metal, this won't sway you.

Rotting Christ, Nile, and Aquilus I'm pretty sure all have albums underway.

No idea if any of these are coming, but very much looking forward to a new Akhlys, The Ruins of Beverast, Vektor, Spectral Lore, Sig:Ar:Tyr, and Ildra.

The archives has DiSanto as the only remaining member of Vektor. it's still active. I wouldn't expect a new album anytime soon though.

Esoteric are releasing a new album this year, and I'm hyped as fuck. After Evoken and their phenomenal album, it's their turn now.

They already played 2 new songs during the Dutch Doom Days and although I really can't "remember" them or how they sounded, I just remember how I "felt" at the time, and it was incredible.

I just hope it's not planned for December or something like that.

Are there any words from the Fear Factory camp? I would gladly welcome somekind of new material from them.

Last I heard, Burt said the album is done and should be out this year once some legal issues are settled. Seen a few people suggest Ray/Christian sued Dino/Burt and won, which is why there's been no activity from them in a while (they'd planned this album and an Obsolete tour for 2018, although obviously neither happened).

Finally the new Obed Marsh has a release date (digital at this point but physical formats to come in the following months, supposedly).

https://obedmarsh.bandcamp.com/album/dunwich

It comes out January 7th, so won't have to anticipate for long! I'm not sure how I feel about the preview track yet. Need to hear the whole thing. But the debut was one of my favorites of 2016 so here's to hoping! And I read that they are already started on a third album. Good grief!

I'm still kicking myself for not going to the Demanufacture tour a few years back. One of my all time favorite albums in ANY genre of heavy metal.

I was lucky enough that Fear Factory bought this tour to Australia and I got to see this. It was really good. They played other songs after it, too. If they do it again I definitely recommend going.

Well, despite all being said about Butron's poor vocals, Fear Factory always provide great live preformance!

I saw the Demanufacture tour and Burton sounded pretty good. Far better than the Industrialist show a few years prior, when his voice was woeful. Not sure if he used any sort of tools or effects to assist him, but there was a big difference in quality.

Anyway, Dino has confirmed that he's been involved in lawsuits and made bankrupt recently, so seems the Chris/Ray suing them story is true.

Two things recently popped up that caught my interest:

-Ultra Silvam announced new album coming in few months, named "The Spearwound Salvation". Their 2017 demo was one of the demos of the year in my stats, as far as orthodox black metal is concerned, so expectations must be high.

-Doombringer announcing to release "Walpurgis Fires" this spring. I liked Sevenfold Pestilence quite a bit, but remember not being that imprerssed by The Grand Sabbath, so we will see...

February is looking promising. New Astronoid, Downfall of Gaia, and King Apathy (who, strangely enough, still aren't considered metal enough to be on this site). Ares Kingdom are also supposed to have a new album out in the spring. Pretty excited for that, though I hope it's better than The Unburiable Dead.

Nucleus by Anthem.

Not only are Anthem one of my absolute favorite Metal bands but they are sticking with Yukio Morikawa on vocals, which is my preferred vocalist in the band. It makes sense to do this album as Yukio is much better in English pronunciation than Eizo and the last time the band released an all English album it did relatively well. I only have one issue with the album prospect though, it is predominantly filled with songs from the bands more recent days.

I have tried the last few years to really give the second era of Anthem a chance, since the bands reforming in 2001 until this date, they have released 9 albums and there is only one album that I like, which is Black Empire. This album has songs from Absolute World and Eternal Warrior a lot but I just cannot get into these albums very much.

Anthem released the track Black Empire for pre-release hype I guess but that was a bad move. Not only does Yukio sound weird singing a song fit more for Eizo's voice but it went from an amazing track to what sounds like just another song. I guess I will reserve judgement to when its released.

Dunno much about Anthem in general as I'm still getting to know them, but the production heard in the preview song Black Empire sounds... neutered for some reason. I haven't even heard the original version yet. And I dunno if majority of post-breakup Anthem sounded THAT polished (or at least close to it), but the new Black Empire (and maybe, the entirety of Nucleus) certainly lacks the oomph their prior albums have.

A Million Dead Birds Laughing just announced a new album and released a single, it has original vocalist Adam Stewart! Really hyped about that one!

Also, that new single from Saor sounds majestic.

I'm liking what I'm hearing from Critical Defiance - Misconception. From what I've heard so far it sounds like it could be my favorite thrash metal album that's come out in the last couple of years. There is one song on their Bandcamp for preview and another was posted at No Clean Singing today.

Noctambulist - Atmospheres of Desolation

Image

Chaotic and slightly dissonant death metal. If Ulcerate had a cleaner production and no slower sections, it might sound like this. Hints of Pyrrhon in this, too. Sounds pretty good to me. Released in 4 days time.

Your future (and current) projects?
I'm currently in full composition of Blut Aus Nord's new album while Yerûšelem's first album, "The Sublime" is about to come out (Release announced on February 8th, NdA)

Is Yerûšelem the beginning of the end for BAN or are you going to tackle both projects?
Absolutely not, Yerûšelem will simply allow us to explore what we have touched on with "Cosmosophy" by pushing things much further, incorporating other sounds and other influences from the 90's Metal Indus scene (I think of old Pitch Shifters, Godflesh, Ministry, Skin Chamber, etc.), Post Punk, New Wave, Electronica and, more generally, hypnotic and repetitive music. For me, the two projects are equally important, none are priority, they are perfectly complementary and each require a very specific approach to the composition. It is possible that we also develop a third entirely electronic project that one.

And what about (2019) Yeruselem - The Sublime?

Ethereal Shroud - Chasmal Fires and Inquiet - Falter

I realise its pretty niche and that the artist has broken promises before (Inquiet / Of Solitude and Solemn), but I'm still very hopeful for these.

Basilysk - Emergence (February 22)

Image

Metal Archives says this is black metal, but it's definitely death metal. Doesn't reinvent the wheel but it sounds good and I like the riffs. A point of curiosity to me is the tracklist. A nearly 15 minute song which could be awesome, but then tracks 9-15 are all days of the week where the songs are barely a minute long...except for "Friday" which is over 3 minutes. A bit strange but could be quite interesting.

I got the promo for the new Chrome Waves album yesterday and it's pretty fantastic stuff. It's a little different from the EP but it has a similar sort of atmosphere. Shaping up to be an early top album contender for the year.

The first new song from Fallujah, sounds a bit more in the good direction of their atmospheric and brutal periods combined

From the one song they have out, this is sounding like some nice funeral doom. Would like to hear some more once it's released but I'm impressed so far.

I'm very curious to see how it'll turn out, and what direction they'll end up taking things.

Oooh nice, I didn't realize they had another one in the works. I loved Surgical Steel.
