I don't think there's been a thread of this kind, so I'm just curious now. What songs are there that make lyrical references to horror flicks? So far, the only one I can think of, apart from every Mortician song, obviously, is Entombed's Supposed to Rot. I just realised recently that the lyrics are an obvious reference to Psycho, and it's sung from the perspective of Norman Bates.

VHS
A lot of the Oregon death metal scene, like Frightmare and Blood Freak

Pretty much these bands are built on them

Deceased has a shitload. Their recent album has lyrics about Black Christmas, Let's Scare Jessica to Death and possibly others.

Seasons of the Wolf's old albums like Nocturnal Revelation have Stephen King and horror-inspired lyrics.

All Cemitério's lyrics are about horror movies. Impetigo and Necrophagia have a lot of them too.
Slayer's South of Heaven and Cleanse the Soul have quotes from The Exorcist if I'm not mistaken. Half of the songs on Scream Bloody Gore are about 80's gore movies

Death Metal is a genre based almost entirely on this, it's hard not to think in one really.

The doom metal band Blood Farmers. Their name was taken from the movie Invasion of the Blood Farmers.

They have a song called The Deathmaster (about the movie Deathmaster) which actually features a melody in the intro / outro from the movie's soundtrack.

They use a bunch of samples from horror movies.

I'm not at all a horror movie buff, but I'm sure a lot of their songs center around horror movies.

Italian band Fulci. Named after the horror movie director Lucio Fulci. Their latest album 'Tropical Sun' is based on Fulci's movie "Zombi 2" (1979). Their other lyrics aren't about "Dumb and Dumber" either...

A few that come to mind:

Dusk has a couple songs with samples from Hellraiser, though I don't think the songs are necessarily about that movie.
Faith has a song Marion Crane about the movie Psycho.
Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man
Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter was made for a Nightmare On Elm Street movie I believe.
Iron Maiden - The Fallen Angel is about the movie Fallen.

Helloween's name comes from the movie Halloween but they put an "e" instead of an "a" to sound like "hell". :-P

Cradle of Filth's Midian is loosely based on Clive Barker's Nightbreed (itself based on his book Cabal). They got Doug Bradley (who was in the film) to do a few pieces of narration on the album too.

Iced Earth's Horror Show album is almost entirely composed of songs about classic monster movies.

Raped in Hatred by Vines of Thorn by The Black Dahlia Murder is about a recurring scene in the Evil Dead movies.

Death Curse's self-titled album (NSFW - cartoon boobs) has songs like Lord of Crystal Lake (Friday the 13th) and Head Cheese (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

S.O.D.'s "Freddy Kreuger" and M.O.D.'s "Man of Your Dreams" are obvious references to the Nightmare on Elm Street movies.''

Cathedral have a few - "Hopkins (Witchfinder General)", "Night of the Seagulls", "The Omega Man".

Not metal, but The Misfits have a ton, obviously.

Yeah someone mentioned Horror Show, literally classic horror stuff like Dracula, Frankenstein, Jekyll, Dragons Child(Creature from the Black Lagoon)

Underrated album.

^It's my favorite Iced Earth album.

This is one of those threads where I have to stop and think because practically every metal band has done at least one horror-themed song. Some, like the Oregon stalwarts previously mentioned, are straightforward with it, but almost everybody worth listening to has at least one.

Shit, even Metallica has a few Lovecraft-inspired tunes, and Entombed's "Left Hand Path" literally breaks down into a jam of the Phantasm theme.

A slight tangent here but Azrath 11 are Cthulhu themed and Seven Kingdoms have a song called In the Walls which is about Lovecraft's The Rats in the Walls.

The song "Pictures In The Gold Room" by Chimaira is about The Shining movie (specifically the Stanley Kubrick version). The title references the final scene where the camera focuses on a line of pictures on the wall of the hotel's hallway and it zooms in on one with Jack Torrance standing among a crowd of party revelers.

I thought the very first album to be mentioned would be Scream Bloody Gore by Death, but it's nowhere in this thread for some reason. Most of the tracks on it are about horror movies.

This is taken directly from the album description here on MA:

"Zombie Ritual" was inspired by the 1979 film Zombie directed by Italian director Lucio Fulci.
"Regurgitated Guts" was inspired by Fulci's film City of the Living Dead (a.k.a. "The Gates of Hell").
"Torn to Pieces" was inspired by the 1981 film Cannibal Ferox (a.k.a. "Make Them Die Slowly") directed by Italian director Umberto Lenzi.
"Evil Dead" was inspired by the 1981 film The Evil Dead directed by Sam Raimi.
"Scream Bloody Gore" was inspired by the 1985 film Re-Animator (a.k.a. "H. P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator") by Stuart Gordon.
"Beyond the Unholy Grave" was influenced by the 1981 film The Beyond (also directed by Fulci).

I'll stick with thrash.

Speaking of Norman Bates...Acid Reign has a cool tune about him called "Motherly Love." They also have an incredibly bad ass 9 minute opus to "Phantasm."

Another good "Psycho" tune is "Bates Motel" from Meliah Rage. They also had a tune inspired by "Evil Dead II" called "Swallow Your Soul."

Can't forget to mention Laaz Rockit and their title track to "Leatherface" TCM III. That soundtrack album kicks ass too.

Re-Animator from the UK were named after the movie and had a tune called "Re-Animator" on their "Deny Reality" EP.

Shocked no one mentioned Rigor Mortis yet either. They also had a tune called "Re-Animator" and songs about "Demons" and "Wizard Of Gore" on their self titled debut album.

My all time favorite ode to Jason Vorhees is "Jason" from Brazil's MX.

"He was born on 13 Friday
To be raw evil insane
After death of your mother
Jason in sight of insanity
Guarding her head"

Machetazo (old school death/grind) made an entire album based on the Blind Dead movies by cult director Amando de Ossorio:

https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Machetazo/Sinfon%C3%ADas_del_terror_ciego/67365

A lot of the lyrics and artwork of the finnish band Hooded Menace are based on this saga of films as well.

"Mrs. Allardyce" is about Burnt Offerings.

I personally love songs that reference Alien like Slaughter's "The Dark" and Tad Morose's "Goddess of Chaos".

What sample is "The Doctor... is in" from?

I'm thinking Re-animator???

I'm sure that line is in a few horror movies but it's probably Hellraiser 2.

I may have been thinking of Benighted, which is a cover of that song ;)

Didn't Razorback Records from the late 90's early 2000's, specialize in exactly this stuff?

Maybe, but both bands are killer from that era (Benighted is still fantastic).

Yep. Engorged does it a bunch, but Frightmare (mentioned early on) abused the hell out of it Mortician-style.

One of the songs on Pungent Stench's Ampeauty also samples it, but it's not the album intro so probably not what you're thinking.

Marduk - Nightwing's music is based on the main theme of Subspecies.

Same with Entombed - Left Hand Path taking the melody from Phantasm.
