You guys may not realize it, but this was a thrilling race to the finish this year. Amorphis, Metal Archives darlings, the first band ever added to the site and perennial favorites of many longtime users, started the polls respectably, slowly climbed up the ranks all month until they held the top spot by nearly a hundred point margin and held it for nearly two weeks, before Visigoth had a late boom and wound up passing them by one point with the last ballot on the last day. We mathematically can not ever have a tighter margin of victory than we got this year outside of a co-winner. So congratulations to Visigoth on an extraordinarily hard fought victory.

And now for something completely the same, all those lonely souls who wound up with only one vote throughout the month. Great albums nonetheless, but still shuttled off to the side to make the list readable. I give you:

So congratulations to Gaerea for taking Debut of the Year 2018! It was quite a spread out vote, but you nudged the rest out and took home the prize. I gave this album a listen and it's definitely some good stuff. Nice to hear black metal with some really thick doomy/sludgey overtones.

Usually I take this time to mention the distribution of genres that I noticed, pointing out as always that fans of thrash, power, and trad metal tend to gather around standout releases while black metal fans are constantly scattered all across the board, and that's true this year as much as any year (check out how saturated Rando Corner is with BM), but this year I noticed a different theme. Instead of there being a standout thrash record that the whole forum rallies around, what seemed to draw the most votes this year were classic bands who have been around for decades. This was absolutely the Year of the Veteran. The top ten consists of only three bands who are at least relatively fresh faces on the scene. Visigoth is the youngest, forming in 2010, followed by Horrendous in 2009 and Chapel of Disease in 2008. That's still roughly a decade for all of them, and everybody else in that top bracket started in the 80s or early 90s (barring Priest of course, who has existed longer than time itself). Some of them were seen as another notch in the belt continuing decades of stellar releases (Amorphis, Voivod, Primordial), some were roaring comebacks after decades of mediocre records with split fan opinion (Judas Priest), and some were the result of a band surging back after a long dormancy to prove why they weren't forgotten all along (Solstice). Hell, even one of the votes for Debut of the Year, ostensibly the category meant to highlight new talent, was for a demo that was recorded in 1988 but not released until this year! Tying into that, the only reason Deceased missed the top ten, despite technically tying for the 10th slot based on points alone, was because this was one hell of a tight year, and they unfortunately fell victim to the whole reason I distribute points in a grand prix system the way I do. Chapel of Disease simply had more votes at the top of ballots. This is why ordering your votes in such a way you're satisfied with is so important! I think this whole poll should just be a fun thing to do that you shouldn't stress yourself out too much with, but it can be a matter of missing the hall of fame or not simply for being placed lower on the list despite a high point total. The one point margin of victory, especially coming on the last ballot, was absolutely fucking bonkers and something I don't think we'll see again in these polls. It's also astonishing that the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finalists were all within one point of each other. There truly was no clear, obvious winner that could be predicted ahead of time like with Vektor and Power Trip in the last two years, and as a result, even if I don't really care for most of the albums in the top ten personally, this is my favorite year of the poll so far.

Also it's worth noting that the bands in spots 2-4 spell out ASS.

And to round everything out, the Rando Calrissian Award for highest placement with no first place votes goes to Satan - Cruel Magic, making it all the way to 4th place without a single first place vote. These old NWOBHM classics came back with a vengeance a few years ago with Life Sentence, and now with their first release since I started running the poll, they've proven once again that they're not going anywhere.

Well that's all for 2018 everybody! I hope it was as good for you as it was for me. Now let's use this thread for discussion and list sharing! How do you feel about the results? Do you love it? Hate it? Want to slap everybody who voted for Panopticon despite half the album being dumbass country songs? Let us know! Thank you all for participating. We'll see you this time next year!

A true fact of life is that I will always, always put at least one or two albums in Rando Corner twice. God dammit, good catch. I'll fix it now.

EDIT: God dammit nope I'm an idiot who copy pasted the 3rd place randos into the 4th place randos. Jesus shit NOW it should be correct!

Such a good year for metal.

I'm surprised Tad Morose Chapter X isn't on here at all. Are Tad Morose not popular here?

Can't believe how many albums I've missed this year. This list is great.

Fucking glad Amorphis isn't #1.

Good job BH!

A true fact of life is that I will always, always put at least one or two albums in Rando Corner twice. God dammit, good catch. I'll fix it now.

There are a couple other errors in the Rando Corner. You have Witch Mountain twice (3rd and 4th) and Pale Divine listed even though they received a few votes. This is a great thing as usual, and I'll have some more to say later.

A'ight y'all, Rando Corner is fixed now. I copy pasted the 3rd place section into the 4th place section as well, that's why there were so many duplicates while at the same time people couldn't find their randos. It should all be good now, hopefully no more mistakes. My bad!

Great job on this as usual. I agree with more of the top results this time than last year - maybe my tastes are becoming more mainstream, who knows...

Bastard... uh, Mr. Head, I'm guessing you were the other one to place Gotsu Totsu Kotsu at number one, based on your review.

I'd forgotten Visigoth came out this year. Good record, though it wouldn't have made my list even had I remembered. This year I was more in tune with the rest of MA as two of my picks made it to the top ten (Satan, Judas Priest), and only five picks ended up in Rando Corner, compared to six last year.

My top ten thirteen is in the link in my sig. But for those who don't want to read all of my extended thoughts, the tl;dr is:

13: Ripped to Shreds - Mai-Zang
12: Skeletal Remains - Devouring Morality
11: Deicide - Overtures of Blasphemy
10: Tomb Mold - Manor of Infinite Forms
9: Chapel of Disease - Long Title
8: Harakiri for the Sky - Arson
7: Mary's Blood - Revenant
6: Wombripper - From the Depths of Flesh
5: Lik - Carnage
4: Thaurorod - Coast of Gold
3: 1914 - The Blind Leading the Blind
2: Gotsu Totsu Kotsu - The Final Stand
1: Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath

This is the first year I didn't vote for a single rando in my top ten. I don't know if this means I should be happy because y'all are finally coming around to agreeing with me, or if I should be upset because I'm now quantifiably untrve.

not only did 3 of my votes make it to the top 10, several others of my votes did not end up in the rando corner like usual. Oh and thank Satan Amorphis did not win.

Great job BH! This was a great read, as always. I'll do a quick cheers/jeers from my read of the list:

-Visigoth winning! They were #1 on my list as well. I always feel out of touch when I read these lists, but I'm glad to see this on there
-Diversity in results. A user on reddit put together a top 10 based on his compilation of 87 different year-end lists, and the top 3 were YOB, Slugdge, and Sleep. None of these cracked our top 10. Obviously Metal-Archives is a bit deeper in the underground, but this guy didn't just use mainstream publications, so it's nice to see something different
-Tomb Mold not breaking the top 10. Their new album was better than the first one, but these guys are incredibly overrated.
-While not good enough for my top 10, major props to whoever voted for the following: Substratum, Fortress, Tantara, and Eternity's End

-Not sure if I'm happy or upset that Haunt is on the list. I thought they'd do way better, but I'm also happy to see them make the list
-I do complain every year about being at least somewhat out of touch, but I'm disappointed to be the only vote for Rocka Rollas and Striker. I get it for Hatchet, but these other two really put out killer records that should have had a wider appeal.

Random Other Observations
-Just one vote for Kamelot is surprising. I didn't even listen to the album, but I thought they'd better on name recognition.
-Similar case for Unleashed, especially considering Deicide did fairly well in the vote.
-Genocide Pact getting a sole vote is also surprising. There was a lot of hype for that when it came out. I do wonder if albums that came out earlier in the year didn't do as well outside of the big names.
-I thought Ghost would do better. I'm not particularly upset (even though I voted for them), but it is a surprise.

Ok some points about my list compared to the results. Me and 1 other person voted for Psycroptic's album as their album of the year, it got no other votes. My first entry from the results from my top 10 was Spectral Wound at 49. I was the only person to give Carved Cross and Lucifer's Child a vote and I also voted for Gaerea for debut of the year which won the award.

1) Psycroptic - As the Kingdom Drowns
2) Spectral Wound - Infernal Decadence
3) Azaghal - Valo pohjoisesta
4) Outre - Hollowed Earth
5) Acherontas - Faustian Ethos
6) Gaerea - Unsettling Whispers
7) Clandestine Blaze - Tranquility of Death
8) Drudkh - They Often See Dreams About the Spring
9) Carved Cross - The Yawning Abyss of Perdition
10) Lucifer's Child - The Order

I thought the new Craft, Anaal Nathrakh and The Ocean albums would get higher points, that's a bit of surprise for me, but overall, I'm quite happy with the final results. Good to see the diversity regarding the tops. Most of my votes are amongst the bigger list, only the Storm upon the Masses (and Horns) ended up in the Rando Corner, so I'd like to draw your attention to their album, of you're into brutal death. Also The Ones Who Came Back was my debut of the year vote.

If we should have made a TOP20 list, the new Psycroptic would have been included somwhere in my from top11 to top20, that's for sure. :)

Great job as usual, BastardHead! It's a quite diverse list and I have already spotted a few records I will be trying out in the future.

This was my list:

1. Voivod - The Wake
2. Amorphis - Queen of Time
3. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs
4. Leviathan - Can't Be Seen by Looking: Blurring the Lines, Clouding the Truth
5. Sigh - Heir to Despair
6. Orion's Reign - Scores of War
7. Bloody Tyrant - Hagakure
8. White Wizzard - Infernal Overdrive
9. Therion - Beloved Antichrist
10. Barren Earth - A Complex of Cages

My favourite album of the year was GrimSkunk's Unreason in the Age of Madness, however, this was a punk rock / alternative rock record.

In my opinion, last year was the best year regarding releases since 2005 in my book. I'm glad the metal scene is alive and kicking these days. I'm looking forward to listening to more outstanding music this year.

Wooooo congrats to Visigoth for that hard-fought victory hahaha

Still sad about my many of my votes being single votes. Did everyone forget that Deströyer 666 and Artillery had new material this year? :(

#21 is still way too high though. It fucking beat Summoning? BRB deleting the archives in protest, this community is too far gone

I already posted this before, but I feel like doing so in this thread is appropriate, so here's my Top 10 list:

10. Dynazty - Firesign
If this album had been more in the style of their previous two, this would've been a Top 5 contender easily, but alas, they've slowed things down a bit, and so they've slid down to the not-so-coveted #10 spot. They've still got some fire in their belly, though, and the good songs are still quite good. Great hooks are still great at any tempo.
Top Three Tracks: "Follow Me," "The Light Inside the Tunnel," and "In the Arms of a Devil"

9. Seventh Wonder - Tiara
Seventh Wonder have always been a bit scattershot, and Tiara is no different. However, the number of tracks I like were much higher this time around than usual, so that's definitely a good thing--I just wish they drizzled more cheese instead of restricting its usage.
Top Three Tracks: "Against the Grain," "Tiara's Song (Farewell Pt. I)," and "By the Light of the Funeral Pyres"

8. Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath
This isn't quite as solid as The Revenant King was, but I'll take it. It still kicks ass. And let's face it, "Traitor's Gate" is just straight-up one of the best songs of 2018, and it's worth the price of admission alone.
Top Three Tracks: "Steel and Silver," "Warrior Queen," and, obviously, "Traitor's Gate"

7. Black Majesty - Children of the Abyss
Their first album in 6 years even though people will claim they released something in 2015 those people are objectively wrong and should stop spreading hideous lies, I was getting worried they'd fallen off the face of the earth, but now they're back with a fire lit under their asses and delivering their most stripped-down and earnest material yet.
Top Three Tracks: "Something's Going On," "Dragons Unite," and "Hideaway"

6. Derdian - DNA
I will never understand how Rhapsody maintained their popularity after doing nothing worthwhile since 2004 while these guys, who have been consistently great since Day 1, get no attention and no fanfare. What the hell, Italy? Ah, well. This album is another feather in their cap.
Top Three Tracks: "Never Born," "Nothing Will Remain," and "Elohim"

5. Thaurorod - Coast of Gold
Now that Dragonforce has basically gone out to pasture, someone needed to step up and fill their niche. Thaurorod decided to give it a go. And it was a very good go. And now I kinda want them to just make this album over and over again to scratch that particular itch, especially if they're gonna be writing songs as monumental as "24601."
Top Three Tracks: "Power," "Feed the Flame," and, of course, "24601"

4. Lovebites - Clockwork Immortality
I'm a bit disappointed that this album isn't as strong as Awakening From Abyss, but that's mostly because it has two songs consecutively in the middle that are forgettable and lame. Everything else is fuckin' awesome, and if those lame tracks were from the EP released earlier this year instead (particularly "Under the Red Sky"), this album would've been a serious contender for the #2 spot.
Top Three Tracks: "Journey to the Otherside," "We the United," and "Rising"

3. A Sound of Thunder - It Was Metal
Hot damn, this album was a trip and a half. A Sound of Thunder are typically the perfect example of a band that only produces a single good song per album, but hot hell, not this time. It Was Metal is full of awesome metal goodness. This was the year's biggest surprise.
Top Three Tracks: "Tomyris," "It Was Metal," and "Charles II"

2. Satan - Cruel Magic
The winning streak that began in 2013 continues as Satan pulls another modern classic straight out of their ass with seemingly no effort. Buncha assholes make it seem so easy to just continually pump out excellent music, the bastards.
Top Three Tracks: "Death Knell for a King," "Cruel Magic," and "The Doomsday Clock"

1. Mary's Blood - Revenant
Quick! Act surprised! Put on your best expressions of puzzlement and wonder! "No way! Zelkiiro put his favorite band at the #1 spot? How unforeseen and unexpected!" So yeah, if you didn't see this coming, you might want to call up your optometrist.
Top Three Tracks: "Megami no Sabaki ~Death Queen's March~," "World's End," and "R.I.P."
I write anime reviews. They're good for your health!

Here's my list:

10. Wayfarer - World's Blood
The opening song is masterful. The thundering guitars make you feel like you're on horseback, riding out on some adventure. Then, the guitars break off into a slow, beautiful melody. I really enjoy how this album has a theme that influences its sound so strongly. Feels really cinematic. Even though some of the sludge metal parts can be weaker, this was a great album overall.

9. Chthe'ilist - Passage into the Xexanotth
The first song is a bit too much of different ideas jammed together, I think, but otherwise it still has great riff-writing. The second is fantastic. It's like vintage Dark Recollections updated with more modern Chthe'ilist weirdness. Really catchy and deranged stuff.

8. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs
The quality takes a slide toward the end, but this is an album packed with soaring melodies, creative riffs, and ambitious, sprawling songs. The chorus of "We Will Not Resist" is extremely catchy.

7. Archgoat - The Luciferian Crown
Archgoat throw a couple mild curveballs here in the songwriting, but they mostly stick to their formula. Simple and very heavy and catchy songs with plenty of blackened malignancy. In particular, the choir part of "Star of Darkness and Abyss" is a total earworm.

6. Of Feather and Bone - Bestial Hymns of Perversion
Clandestine-era Entombed meets war metal in Of Feather and Bone's thundering new opus. Unlike some bands in the entombedcore and war metal scenes, these guys are great at writing both the slow grooves and the faster riffs.

5. Cénotaphe - Horizons (also debut of the year)
Every time I listen to this album now, I get all the songs on it stuck in my head for the rest of the day. This band skillfully blends light and dark, like Insane Vesper's LayiL, an album from a couple years ago that I thought was amazing. Much like that album, dark black metal gives way to angelic, Lydian-scale-sounding melodies and vice versa in a dreamlike waltz, although I think Cénotaphe is a bit better at intermingling light and dark more smoothly.

4. Binah - Phobiate
By the time this album ends, it feels like you've been on a journey or you've just finished seeing a movie. Unlike most death metal bands that try to be contemplative and proggy, Binah never really ventures into the progressive death metal genre, per say, so their songs don't feel lighter than your usual death metal, although they still use complex and creative riff structures. The best of both worlds.

3. W.A.I.L. - Wisdom Through Agony into Illumination and Lunacy vol. II
New Age Extreme Metal? Avant-garde Melechesh-Bolzer-core? David Lynch Death/Doom Metal? Whatever it is, it's some very entertaining stuff with cool riffs and other stuff (the five-minute piano interlude on track 2 is a highlight).

2. Uada - Cult of a Dying Sun
Continues the wistful melodic black metal style of the previous album. This album is longer, which is both good and bad. The opening track contains the greatest riff I've heard all year.

1. Cultes des Ghoules - Sinister, or Treading the Darker Paths
This murderous slab of black metal feels more "serious," like Haxan, but it also has the superior riffs of Henbane. No frills, no trends, just total destruction.

Bonus - top 5 demos:

5. Tristengrav - I - Incendiarism of Nous
Pretty darn catchy black metal. A bit more consciously melodic. These guys definitely like to rock out.

4. Purity Renaissance - Promo
This is some good stuff. Black metal with skillful songwriting. I still need to hear the LP.

3. Cerebral Rot - Cessation of Life
Usually, I find that death metal demos these days tend to be promising, but not something I'd listen to long-term in themselves. This one rises above the pack simply with better riffs.

2. Traveler - Demo 2018
Although "Starbreaker" steals the show, the other two songs are also enjoyable. Trad metal with spirit and riffs.

1. Starved - Starved
The album cover sums it up pretty well. Spooky, ghostly raw black/funeral doom metal with some neat twists and turns.

I'm pretty much rando guy this year, with the majority of my list ending up in Rando Corner:

1 Aborted - TerrorVision (32nd)
2 Spirit of Rebellion - The Reign of Denial (rando)
3 Avslut - Deceptis (144th)
4 Inferi - Revenant (64th)
5 The Order of Apollyon - Moriah (rando)
6 Voidhanger - Dark Days of the Soul (rando)
7 Empyrean Eclipse - Perdition (rando)
8 Centaurus-A - Means of Escape (rando)
9 Trollheim's Grott - Aligned with the True Death (rando)
10 Aorlhac - L'esprit des Vents (69th)

This kind of makes sense, since I do choose bands to listen to randomly.

My Debut of the Year was Golgothan Remains. It was either that or Frozen Crown. Both were numerically tied on my list. I almost didn't bother to vote , since neither of these is really a great album, but they show promise.

2018 Albums of the Year:

1. Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath
Solid to good riffs, good lyrics and perfect singing. It's a great heavy metal record with lots of staying power.

2. Acolytes of Moros - The Wellspring
Superb trad doom record in the vein of Reverend Bizarre. A surprise find for me. The singer channels Albert Witchfinder/Sami better than I've so far found anywhere else.

3. Drawn and Quartered - The One Who Lurks
Very good dark death metal record. Great riffs. Brutal as fuck.

4. Runemagick - Evoked from Abysmal Sleep
Great dark death/doom stuff from the long running masters.

5. Iron Void - Excalibur
My second favorite doom record of the year. Good memorable riffs, lean songwriting and superb singing.

6. Cosmic Atrophy - The Void Engineers
Lived up to my expectations. Good dark and unnerving atmospheres. Perfectly executed and mixed vocals. Definitely an album I'll be revisiting a lot.

7. Varathron - Patriarchs of Evil
Great riffs and songwriting. My favorite bm album of the year.

8. Outre-Tombe - Nécrovortex
Catchy crushing dark swedeath stuff.

9. Khemmis - Desolation
Great singing, unique songwriting and atmosphere.

10. Marduk - Viktoria
Ripping lean black metal from the veterans. This spot was close between several albums. However, I liked the simplistic ripping approach and very lean songwriting of this album. They also mixed in a couple of slower plodding numbers which were also pretty good.

Debut Album of the Year: Acolytes of Moros - The Wellspring

I didn't see Acolytes of Moros up in the debut section, is this a mistake?

Overall, not a year I was particularly impressed with after 178 2018 metal albums. Still a lot of worthy stuff, but compared to last year, definitely far less impressive for me. Visigoth would probably land between 5-10 for me last year, for comparison.

noticed an error: there's an entry for "Runmagick – Evoked from Abysmal Sleep" in the rando corner (with the properly spelled one sitting @ 26pt on the list)
at first i was like, wtf, how could they end up in rando, before noticing the typo :p

anyway, here's my list:

1. Slægt - The Wheel
2. Chapel of Disease - ...and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye
3. Uada - Cult of a Dying Sun
4. Horrendous - Idol
5. Primordial - Exile Amongst the Ruins
6. Gaerea - Unsettling Whispers
7. Kriegsmaschine - Apocalypticists
8. Gotsu Totsu Kotsu - 背水之陣 (The Final Stand)
9. Svartidauði - Revelations of the Red Sword
10. Outre - Hollow Earth

this was a really tough year - i feel like i had a longer short-list of potential top tenners, but if i were to merge this list to the previous year's, i'd have my 2018 #1 at like #5. i'm also pretty sure that i'd make a very different 2018 list in a couple of months, whereas i still feel quite solid about my 2017 list

i'm slightly surprised to see not a single vote for rogaty's diabel - i would have voted for them as debut of the year if it wasn't for gaerea

some of my runners up include aura noir, varathron, tribulation, necrophobic, rogaty, sulphur aeon, runemagick, binah, aetheria conscientia, golgothan remains, hooded menace, nightmarer, lik, etc.
All the best bands are affiliated with Satan. -Bart Simpson

Basically my whole list is epic trad metal and weird death metal. I know what I like.

1. Twitching Tongues - Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred - masterful metalcore: epic/gothic doom meets punky death metal and beatdown hardcore. Definitely one of their best and most metal albums yet. I'm shocked that these guys don't get half the attention that Vein, Harms Way, Jesus Piece etc do from the metal community, considering their style is a little more varied and "true".

2. Outer Heaven - Realms of Eternal Decay - best death metal album in a year chocked full with awesome releases. The perfect balance of ignorant violence and otherworldly weirdness. Nonstop riffing and a great Mortician/Chris Barnes vocal delivery. Sounds a lot Demilich played by one of the death metal/hardcore bands described above.

3. Visigoth - Conquerors Oath - in all honest, I think this album is a little bit dumbed down and excessively streamlined compared to their earlier stuff. It's a lot more focused on the vocals and lead guitars than the riffs this time around. It's a testament to their songwriting ability that they still pulled this off and one of the best albums of the year for sure. I almost considered ranking it lower, but it was definitely my most listened to record this year, and I'm glad it's got the top spot over all the older legacy bands. Take a shot for every variation of the word "forge" in the lyrics.

4. Khemmis - Desolation - their best album yet. Seeing them play with TBDM was one of my favorite sets in 2018. The incorporation of black metal vocals and riffing works really well here. Not as much trad metal influence as expected from "Isolation" but as a whole they've cemented themselves as one of the best new doom bands.

5. Zealotry - At the Nexus of Stillborn Worlds - how the fuck was I the only person that voted for this?? Likely their best album yet as well, and the best full on "weird death" album in a year that delivered a lot of it. Reminds me a lot of early At the Gates, when they could more accurately be called tech death than melodic death. Stirring and epic and longwinded songwriting that never lets up on intensity.

6. Wytch Hazel - II: Sojourn - "The Devil is Here", "See My Demons", "Still We Fight" are all some of my favorite songs of the year. Glorious heavy metal in the style of epic NWOBHM with a folk twist. Excellent vocals and lead guitar and loads of storytelling atmosphere.

7. Gatekeeper - East of Sun - I loved the vocalist and doomier style of Prophecy and Judgement, but this is really fun as well. The first track that sounds like Savage Grace is a bit of a mindfuck, but after that it's all pounding epic trad metal. "Warrior Without Fear" is always stuck in my head. Interested to hear what JP does in Funeral Circle and Traveler next, since it took some warming up to his style on this album.

8. Burial Invocaion - Abiogenesis - Wacky death metal that with a lot of epic and proggy twists that never loses sight of brutality. Somewhat comparable to the convoluted songwriting of Blood Incantation, but the core of the riffs feel like thrashy Suffocation songs like "The Invoking" or "Synthetically Revived".

9. Lethean - Waters of Death - missing Atlantean Kodex lately? You'll want to hear this. True epic metal with a doomy twist, think Isen Torr or While Heaven Wept with a female vocalist. Also comparable to demo era Twisted Tower Dire, which also had female vocals. It's got a dreamy quality, with lots of quiet and acoustic moments and long flowing riffs that slowly merge into each other.

10. Monotheist - Scourge - don't need Obscura or Alkaloid or even Rivers of Nihil when I have this album. Interesting prog death with lots of noodly and jazzy bits, but with a heavier edge like Suffo or Immolation. Excellent well-rounded vocals that are truly brutal at times, from JJ of Ovid's Withering and 7 Horns 7 Eyes. He has another project called Nekroi Theoi debuting next year that is more in the manner of BDM proper and black metal I'm very excited for.

Debut of the year: Outer Heaven

Didn't get to check out some stuff I was interested in, like Deceased, RUR, Akitsa, Chapel of Disease, etc.

Wow, that's a LOT of quality metal.

I admit I forgot about Anaal Naakrath's new one. But then, maybe that says a lot.

I feel bad for giving Judas Priest a point as my #10 now. So many more superior albums lower down I could have thrown it to.

Anyway, thanks so much for doing this: I have been born in 1985 but this feels like a good time to be a metalhead when I look at all this.

Hey, at least one of my top ten made THE top ten, so that's pretty sweet! (Judas Priest)

Also, I'm beyond shocked how high the amount of points Ghost got is....

Awesome work as usual. As in the past I have tons of stuff in Rando Corner. Most of my music listening is at work and which means I always skew towards atmo BM stuff as it helps me concentrate.

1. Inexorum: Lore of the Lakes
2. Pure Wrath: Sempiternal Wisdom
3. Can Bardd: Nature Stays Silent
4. Gaerea: Unsettling Whispers
5. Deicide: Overtures of Blasphemy
6. Untamed Land: Between The Winds
7. Imber Luminis: Contrasts
8. Elderwind: The Colder the Night
9. Choria: Black Secret Beyond of Nature
10. Solitvdo: Militia

I figured I'd take a moment to call out a few of my highlights that others may have missed:

Inexorum put together a monster album that is really worth checking out. Fantastic riffs and melodies that I just can't stop listening to. Similarly, Solitvdo packed so many different riffs into the ~30 Militia. Epic, triumphant BM that deserves more exposure. And Pure Wrath are really worth checking out too!

I'm looking forward to spending more money that I should on stuff from this list, cheers!

Great work and thanks a lot to Mr. Head for crunching the numbers!

Also, hello appropriate thread, posting my top 10. Two other albums would've made it but one didn't fall under the rules (Tusmørke, Norwegian prog rock) and the other one would've been accepted even though I thought it wouldn't (The Night Flight Orchestra). For my complete top 50, see my signature.

10. Watain – Trident Wolf Eclipse
Too big to be trve, Watain spit in your face and pummel the infidels with rabid yet epic black metal of the finest kind. “The Wild Hunt” was a downer compared to “Lawless Darkness”, but this one rights the ship and incorporates the more chaotic and fervent sound of Watain’s earliest records with the magniloquence of later days, creating a masterpiece that challenges their finest hours.

9. Of Feather and Bone – Bestial Hymns of Perversion
One of the best death metal albums the past few years. A malevolent, menacing, monstrous and meat-grinding onslaught of pummeling straight from the cavernous pits of hell.

8. Marduk – Viktoria
Do. Not. Ever. Fucking. Underestimate. Marduk. Primitive and violent, “Viktoria” doesn’t give a fuck, and completely annihilates any oncomers. Absolutely punishing and feral, this is another gem in their stellar discography. Also have to mention the beautiful and minimalistic cover art, precisely the right kind of visual representation of the music. As raw as a rusty nail in the eye of Jehovah, “Viktoria” is pure gold.

7. Ghost – Prequelle
Fuck the haters. Ghost has been one of the best bands in the world, regardless of genre, since their inception in 2010. Their/Forge’s ability to create super catchy hooks is uncanny, as are the impressive arranging skills. This new one highlights both of these traits in the best possible way, as most songs are pure hit material. The moronic fear among metalheads in general against catchy and immediate shit is pathetic, and if a saxophone solo (mah gad! it is glorious) twists your panties, then I’m really sorry for you. Hail Papa and his music creation skills ov doom!

6. Necrophobic – Mark of the Necrogram
Apparently the return of vocalist Strokirk and guitarists Ramstedt and Bergebäck have sparked the Necrospark into full flame and set the death/black metal world ablaze again. This is easily Necrophobic’s best album since “Darkside” some twenty-plus years ago, and if you do not listen – to hell with you! Tsaaaaaaar Bombaaaaa!!!

5. Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn
Fuck. Craft-Jocke’s rocking and twisted black metal influences have turned the songwriting’s malignancy up a few notches, and this sound mixes extremely well with Nick’s demented rasps. Probably Bloodbath’s finest moment since “Nightmares Made Flesh”, and that’s saying a lot.

4. Craft – White Noise and Black Metal
Harsh and passionate, as it should be. I’ve liked Craft before, but this shit took it to another level completely. Ferocious, raw and catchy with a powerful production, “White Noise and Black Metal” is a must buy for anyone into the finest of all arts, meaning black metal. Fucking fantastic.

3. Panphage – Jord
There’s no way around it: the best black metal of today is made in Sweden. Panphage’s swan song packs a pagan/folk-tinged punch of primitive power, which hits you in the heart like a thousand daggers. Off to the sunset you ride, thanks for everything.

2. Funeral Mist – Hekatomb
A true black metal masterpiece. They still come forth, once in a while. Abrasive, brutal, uncompromising, yet beautiful and passionate in all its unholy glory, Hekatomb plants another mailed fist in the dental region of Yahwe. Also, “Cockatrice” = song of the year. Hail Satan.

1. Stilla – Synviljor
Yessss. Just like Domgård a year before, Stilla have made a fantastic continuation of all things awesome about the 90’s black metal sound. Groovy riffs, ice-cold melodies, frantic arrangements, passionate delivery – “Synviljor” has it all. And the coolest fucking cover image in a while. What stands out the most about this album is the arcane atmosphere, which is greatly enhanced by the peculiar and archaic synths, as well as the mystery-inducing and hypnotic riffs with odd periods. As much as “Synviljor” reminds me of great albums from the 90’s like “Kronet til konge”, “Transilvanian Hunger”, “The Shadowthrone” or even “Høstmørke” and “Aspera Hiems Symfonia”, it is still very much an album with Stilla’s own sound. 2018 was a year with many great releases, and “Synviljor” is the cream of the crop. Hail Crom.

Superb trad doom record in the vein of Reverend Bizarre. A surprise find for me. The singer channels Albert Witchfinder/Sami better than I've so far found anywhere else.

Debut Album of the Year: Acolytes of Moros - The Wellspring

 Aww, I had to tell the band. Good friends of mine. Been there helping them since day 1. A sigh of relief that the debut was finally released after so many delays and bad luck. Onwards and upwards!

My list:

10. Obscura - Diluvium: Sci-fi and tech-death wank continues to gel well, as the themes involved match up to sterile productions, shiny and bright scale runs and bass noodling. The cyborg singing also adds to the nerdy fun.

9. Mary's Blood - Revenant: At first I was a bit let down, but this continues to grow on me as their prior Fate album gets less listens. Lots of different shit going on here, from bluesy rock wailing to prog-bombast to thrashy rippers.

8. Horrendous - Idol: It's the vocals that really win me over, a complete asshole whose Premier League team just lost the damn Cup. The music is fun though, adventurous without aiming to be too impenetrable for its own good.

7. Madder Mortem - Marrow: Proggy doom metal that sometimes drops some fucking grooves. Pissed-off mom vocals impress as always.

6. Lovebites - Clockwork Immortality: I should be an ass and just say it's the white dresses they wear. So stylish. But no...it's really Miyako. Such an adorable ice-queen.

5. Voivod - The Wake: It's always nice to vote for guys older than me...it's like I'm young again. Does nostalgia also play a role? Sure...that's how I roll.

4. Cross Vein - Gate of Fantasia: Japan is all about enhancing shit, so this flower power deal is like some insane garden of blooming excess. Enchanted florists playing this stuff like they mean it.

3. Tomb Mold - Manor of Infinite Forms: I don't mind voting for guys who look like they work at cafes featuring colored chalk on blackboard menus. The riffs get immense, and brings out the old-school vibe.

2. Sigh - Heir to Despair: Like an extreme metal version of Jethro Tull's Passion Play. Great musicianship, lots of flute solos and a swerve into total goofiness for a while before getting back to business. I enjoy the ride every time.

1. Sinistro - Sangue Cássia: 4AD dreaminess meets gargantuan post-doom lumbering terror. I've heard plenty of other groups try this sort of thing, but not to this level of intensity regarding atmosphere and heaviness.

For someone who fucking loved 'The Revenant King, 'Conqueror's Oath' was easily my most disappointing album of the year. Still better than Amorphis winning, lesser of two evils etc.

'Firepower' is also baffling but I guess there are people here who haven't listened to 'Painkiller'.

My request for a negative jillion points was once again ignored, although I forgot to include 'Idol' in that list. Not surprised it made it up there so high considering it is the perfect mix of good songs and insufferably bad songs in that classic Horrendous fashion of being unable to keep a coherent thought for an entire fucking album.

Real glad the new Sleep album didn't make it into the top ten. It is perfectly fine for a comeback release of sorts, but it was real tiring to see it top so many "Best Of" lists while scouring the internet for anything I missed during the year.

Thanks for your hard work on this BH. Everyone else, listen to the Lifeless Dark demo now.

Here's how I voted for the Top 10 (in past years, I'd write elaborate snippets for each, but I just don't have it in me at the moment ):

1. Panopticon-The Scars Of Man On The Once Nameless Wilderness Parts 1 & 2
2. Wolvhammer-The Monuments Of Ash And Bone
3. Immortal-Northern Chaos Gods
4. Deafheaven-Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
5. Deceased-Ghostly White
6. Monstrosity-The Passage Of Existence
7. Eneferens-The Bleakness Of Our Constant
8. Tomb Mold-Manor Of Infinite Forms
9. Of Feather And Bone-Bestial Hymns Of Perversion
10. Wilt-Ruin

Here are some honorable mentions (unranked, listed alphabetically, what would be 11-20ish if ranked):

Altars Of Grief-Iris
Between The Buried And Me-Automata 1 & 2 (note: for me, in my personal view, and for my personal cataloging, I consider this band full fledged prog-metal)
Infera Bruo-Cerement
Krigsgrav-Leave No Path To Follow
Lychgate-The Contagion In Nine Steps
Marsh Dweller-Wanderer
Megaton Leviathan-Mage
The Ocean-Phanerozoic 1: Palaeozoic
Oceans Of Slumber-The Banished Heart
Omgeving-Wijde Wijdte

My choice for debut of the year was Imperialist-Cipher. Interestingly enough, I only got two full length albums this year that were debuts (the other being Spetic Tank-Rotting Civilisation)), so it was a 50-50 shot.

Some worthwhile EPs:

Cryptopsy-The Book Of Suffering Tome 2
The Great Die-Oxygenation
Sentient Horror-The Crypts Below

Probably the biggest disappointment this year was Into Eternity-The Sirens (10 years for well played, yet poorly produced overlong songs, two of which were already released as standalone singles?). Other than that, a lot of long term legacy bands completely phoned in albums this year (see At The Gates, The Crown, Deicide, Funeral Mist, Kataklysm, Krisiun, Marduk, Pig Destroyer, Watain). Yeah I know, three of my top ten are considered long term legacy acts (and one could completely be accused of phoning in a fan service pandering album)-sue me.

Overall I personally found 2018 to be a disappointing year for music altogether, metal or otherwise, especially when compared to 2016 and 2017, which were much stronger years in my view.

I guess I need to spend more time with that Amorphis record. I didn't think it was anything special in the first few listens and kind of shelved it, but for it receive such a high rank in a place that has some of the pickiest tastes makes me think I overlooked it.

Wow! What a finish!!

My list:

1. Entropia - Vacuum
2. Kriegsmaschine - Apocalypticists
3. Anaal Nathrakh - A New Kind of Horror
4. Ahtme - Sewerborn
5. Urfaust - The Constellatory Practice
6. Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name
7. Ineffable Demise - Beyond the Marrow Gates
8. Gorycz - Piach
9. Symphony of Symbols - Historiocriticism
10. Aborted - TerrorVision

Someone else voted for Entropia as #1 - let's talk! :D

I'm surprised Anaal Nathrakh and Urfaust didn't get higher places. I thought they were far more well received. I also predicted Amorphis would win this year as a guess and I was so close to being right, haha.

Much more to say and people to respond to. Great work, BastardHead. :)

I need to look through this list to see if I missed anything really good, I fell behind in my album search and don't think I heard anything from bunch of these albums.
I didn't find anything really amazing this year, and there was a lot of albums I was disappointed with. But I did find a handful of really good albums.

My top 10:
1. “The Final Stand” Gotsu Totsu Kotsu (Placed 35)
I'm surprised this didn't get more votes, GTK are very consistent with their releases, on the 3 albums I have by them there isn't one song I would call bad or boring.

2. “Akula” Akula(Rando Corner)
Its a new band so I'm not surprised, and the production quality is kind of low, but still acceptable to me.

3. “Twist of Fate” Hitten (Placed 104)

4. “Seeking Infinity” Pantheist (Rando Corner)
I thought this would get a few votes, If you like funeral doom check it out.

5. “2nd Edition” Gygax (Rando Corner)
I actually just found this one a day or two before submitting my ballot. Very fun album, more people need to here it.

6. “Conqueror's Oath” Visigoth (Placed 1)
Wow that was surprising, I figured it would be high on the list, but not number 1.

7. “The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness I and II” Panopticon (Placed 25)

8. “The Endless Road Turns Dark” The Skull (Placed 163.)

9. “II: Sojourn” Wytch Hazel (Placed 36)

10. “The Midnight Tales” Stonewitch (Rando Corner)
Another late find for me, it is kind of tied with “Abyss Between the Stars” Ursa on my end of year list, but I placed “The Midnight Tales” above it because I really like its opening track “The Phoenix Risen”.
