Othuum released a helluva solid debut with The Astral Horror. Lovecraft themed Doom Metal. Heavy plodding riffs that manage to stay fresh throughout each song, crushing bass that follows the leads but sometimes does it’s own thing, and eerie vocals that match the theme of the album incredibly well.

Everything about this was great for me. Sure the sound is well worn but the riffs and vocals and production were all perfection. Eager to hear more.

I agree. I'm quite eager to hear more as well. I found them from the Nokturnal Mortum FB page - some connection between the two bands (previous members or something).

I dunno about this release. It's pretty tight, I have to admit, and though I haven't finished it it doesn't sound THAT dissonant for a black metal album (maybe because I was expecting something like DSO?). I don't see this album doing much for me unfortunately.

No it's kind of "medium-well" dissonant while still having more focused riffs or something... Also very tight and technical as you said. I wasn't really sure how to describe them in my first post. I'm glad it's not DSO dissonant, I have a hard time getting really into that stuff these days. Even these guys are a bit more than I usually like. Still think they're quite talented and others will appreciate them. People who are into the Icelandic stuff and things like Serpent Column should like Barshasketh as well.

Yeah, I had this exact thought. I was expecting something like Deathspell Omega/Ulcerate/Convulsing but didn't get any of that vibe. Oh well.

Yeah, I hear some dissonance on the riffs, and yes, these guys play dense-sounding, riff-based black metal. Though again, don't hear something that differentiates them from all the other black metal bands. I'll let you know once I finish listening to their S/T album (which feels kind of like a chore tbh...)

Just came here to say that DsO and Ulcerate are the masters at this style (and Gorguts is the big daddy), but the dude behind Convulsing is onto something. Two amazing full lengths under his belt. If he continues progressing like this and maybe if he finds a killer drummer that can feed of his ideas...
This other band seems like it has the ingredients but so far the feedback from you guys has been lukewarm... I haven't got time to check now, Serpent Column's EP is monopolizing my brain.

New Hermodr album released yesterday, its still the usual atmospheric black metal but it has a more uplifting flair to it.

Yes, Barshasketh does have the ingredients as you have mentioned. They play tight, sliiiiightly dissonant (in a DsO-ish manner, and sparingly at that), riff-driven black metal with a dense production. And while the production in the songs are generally treble-y, which is usual for the genre, the bass is surprisingly audible.

However, despite all that, I do not hear any thing that makes this band stand out from the thousand other metal bands that play black metal.

With that said, I have not heard any of the band's prior albums and I have not yet listened to the album in its entirety because it starts to feel like a chore around four to five songs into the album. Maybe I do have to give this album more chance than I have given it so far and let myself experience it as a whole while lying down or something. I dunno.

You guys are savage on Barshasketh, but that's cool :) I listened to it again last night and liked it even more, the album finishes really strong too. That being said I think DSO has turned into an un-listenable cacophony of dying pots and pans robots. I liked 1 or 2 songs from Paraceltus and Drought (the outro) I do really like Convulsing though.

At least there's a reason for me now to at least make it to the very end of the album, aside from me engulfing just about any straightforward BM release when I started listening to extreme metal.

I do feel that it is a waste to just give up listening to a very tight album, considering that their previous two full-lengths have high ratings here.

I'm with you, Sick6Six, I'm liking this a lot more than DsO or Ulcerate ( :ugh: ) This is dissonance used tastefully, without turning into nonsense. And with actual riffs as well. Pretty cool.

What I've heard of that Barshasketh album is alright. But a bit unadventurous compared to DsO.

In the case of Paracletus I've never understood the pots and pans criticism. That album is specked with memorable and even catchy moments to give direction to the cacophony. The Synarchy of Molten Bones is just the cacophony though.... I think that album rightly deserves this criticism.

Well, looks like I'm already set with my top symphonic power metal album of the year, Ancient Bards' Origine:

https://ancientbards.bandcamp.com/album ... aga-part-2

Reminiscent of Rhapsody at their best, but with both female and harsh vocals. Not sure how I haven't heard of them before but I'm blown away.

Paracletus is so far from being pots and pans... It's one of the few really dissonant bm albums that I just find myself humming parts of. It is that catchy. I mean, I also love Synarchy and all of Ulcerate, but Paracletus is a bit different.

Gotta recommend the new Obed Marsh after finally getting some time to listen to it. Can't yet rank it against the debut, it's a bit more varied though. Lovecraft black/doom done right.

And it sounds like I need to check out Othuum asap.

I'd have to agree to this one. While the dissonance is used sparingly, some songs do not use dissonance to a noticeable point (e.g., Vacillation).

Is it just me or would it be better if the album finished with Rebirth instead?

Ok, here's another one just released this morning. It sounds a lot like Judas Iscariot if he kept progressing from his last album... I hope that's more accurate than my last description!

Akantha - Baptism In Psychical Analects
https://akantha.bandcamp.com/album/baptism-in-psychical-analects

P.S. the pots and pans DSO reference was mostly directed at their last album. Cleetus and Drought were cool albums to listen to on occasion, just never the kind of thing I listened to over and over.

On a side note, I kinda regret only listening to Flotsam and Jetsam now instead of giving them a chance when I first started to listen to metal waaaay back. Their new album kicks ass and this album seems to be one of the best thrash albums so far (though it's still January lol). Were they always like this, by the way?

Four I am really enjoying are

Two from the same experimental black metal band

https://velnezers.bandcamp.com/album/i- ... rvis-t-rum

https://velnezers.bandcamp.com/album/ii ... -z-le-d-gs

A compilation from a dsbm band-just like last year with the Uten Hap comp, this could already be my comp of the year
https://gsproduction.bandcamp.com/album ... -2014-2017

And so far my album of the year, black metal and a scream in the background

I stopped listening to Hermodr after The Darkness of December because it was already too "uplifting", and now it's even more? I'll pass then, I still prefer Vinter's style better.

Imha Tarikat - Kara Ihlas
Black metal with awesome guitar leads and interesting vocals. Haven't been able to give it a full proper listen yet, but I'm pretty sure it kicks ass. Posted on NWN and getting a lot of love there. I'm already regretting not ordering the gold vinyl yesterday when there were still a few left :(

Shit I haven't even listened to Akantha yet! So many albums, so little time

Interesting vocals and guitar leads indeed. And I think the band's duo share vocal duties here, as some songs do have a different-sounding vocal approach.

I wouldn't call that Hermodr album "uplifting," although I guess it is compared to usual dsbm stuff. Definitely an improvement over that Rovdjur EP I heard last year.

If you all want more dissonant black metal, that Deveneror album someone mentioned on the last page is good.

The melodies and the atmosphere became "prettier" since What Once Was Beautiful. I've heard a few more songs after The Darkness of December, which I still own, but it stopped grabbing my attention because it all seemed like the same nice melody again and again. So unless there was a major stylistic shift over the past couple of years I'm not spending more time with it since I mostly listen to Vinter or Krigstid over the rest of of his discs anyway.

Most impressive releases so far for me are the following:

Soilwork - Verkligheten
Embrional - Evil Dead
Malevolent Creation - The 13th Beast
Medeia - Xenosis
Oblivion - Oblivion
Rifftera - Across The Acheron
Violblast - Theater Of Despair
Ancient Bards - Origine
Jinjer - Micro
Evergrey - The Atlantic (best release so far this year - extremely impressive)
Altitudes & Attitude - Get It Out
Dust Bolt - Trapped in Chaos
Flotsam and Jetsam - The End Of Chaos
Starbreaker - Dysphoria
Inglorious - Ride To Nowhere (really loving this one)

So 2019 is of to a good start...let's see if it can come close to the amazing metal year 2018 was...

Uhh... Dust Bolt sounds like a watered-down Metallica with a trying-hard James Hetfield impersonator on vocals that sometimes growls/shrieks. Kinda sound drunk also.

As for Violblast, the first few tracks of their new album that I listened to sounded forced and contrived (especially the first track), so... I'll pass that one.

I did like the new Flotsam and Jetsam record a lot. Though the songs kinda sounded samey, they never sounded samey to the point that it will bore you (tl;dr. very entertaining album). Makes you listen to the album from end to end.

I might have to give another listen to Medeia; the first few tracks I've stumbled upon are great. Heard the Medeia album in its entirety already. Interesting sound they got; not the usual death metal that I've heard recently. Kinda feels overfilled with tracks, though, but still a worthwhile listen

Imha Tarikat's debut full-length -- absolutely recommendable

Aside from the interesting vocals and the awesome guitar leads that Sick6Six has mentioned, it also keeps you on your toes for some reason. Also very cohesive.

Best thing I've heard released so far in 2019 has been Malevolent Creation's newest. Truly a powerful, blasty, and relentless piece of death metal. Yeah, it runs a little long and the drumming and vocals feel a little robotic at times, but there's some really potent riffs on this thing. Kind of reminds me of Sinister's last album, though not as good. Nothing amazing and probably not going to make many year end lists, but it's a solid album nonetheless.

Surprised to see so much love for that Barshasketh. I thought it was total shit. The songs twist and turn without really going anywhere, and it's got some of the poorest excuses for riffs I've ever heard in modern black metal. It's well produced and feels like it should be a lot better than it is, but after listening to it in full five or so times, I just grew to hate it more and more. A shame, too, as their last album was actually pretty cool.

Maybe I'm gonna listen to the new Malevolent Creation more... I have listened to it only for a few times. I just listened to it more and while I still find it tight and old-school (which I find to my liking), the vocals are a lot more monotonous than what others think of Corpsegrinder's. And yes, it still drags for a little bit longer than necessary so I got bored near the album's end but the choruses are catchy. Like CANVAS! OF FLESH!

Speaking of Barshasketh, while I do think their S/T sounds tight and the dissonance was used sparingly, I had a hell of a hard time finishing the album. Looks like I need to re-evaluate that one. The only parts that make me jump off my feet are the dissonant parts of the album. The first half still is a fucking chore to listen through and the whole album is still not as adventurous as it should be. Also, it did not age well.

I'm only 4 songs into Manifestic's debut album, "Anonymous Souls", but this is super cool spacey speed/thrash metal from Germany. It takes very strong hints from Vektor, but doesn't really sound like them. I think people are going to really enjoy this one when it comes out!

Whoa, I have to say I'm pretty glad I gave new Carnal Forge a chance. They never clicked with me, and a whole lot on Please...Die!was downright irritating, but Gun to Mouth Salvation is quite good. I'd say there's a more pronounced melodic aspect to their music - sometimes reminding me of Darkane which is a great thing - with nice and well worked-out leads, and an overall more tempered approach to songwriting, with a lot of mid-tempo chug sections and more grooving moments, some atmospheric arpeggio embellishments even. The aggression is still there, though the faster riffs are nothing more than good or serviceable. Oh yeah, and the new vocalist has a flat out better tone IMO, even if he lack some dynamism and is one-dimensional, than Kjellgren.

It's early, and so far the best albums for me in 2019 are the new Evergrey (gorgeous piece of music) and for extreme metal these two:

Musmahhu - Death metal in the vein of Sulphur Aeon though not as good. Still an ass kicking record though.

And the new Altarage is absolutely nuts. I'm sure it's been mentioned already.
