I need to give it more listens but it did seem more solid rather than great.

edit: Home by The Offering is pretty sick. Some heavy power/thrash stuff on here as well as some other genre influences. The performances on display here are absolutely great, the songs bang and are pretty catchy too.

https://dreamtroll.bandcamp.com/album/second-to-none

I don't know how nobody is talking about this one. It's so unique and different and sounds amazing. They're listed as heavy/power on the archives but I've never heard any power metal band that sounded remotely like them. Closest might be Vulvagun but even that is a stretch.

It's an intriguing album. I'm still exploring it. I find it somewhat proggy, in contrast to the tr00/power imagery they project. Nice somewhat modernistic vocals.

Out of all albums released in 2019, what would be the closest album any of you can think of that would be comparable to Dark Angel - Darkness Descends, Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death, or the first two Demolition Hammer albums?

You may have heard this one, but Critical Defiance's "Misconception" is a good choice:

Agreed. The vocals are very modern rock sounding, but the music defies any genre labeling that I can come up with. It's so slick sounding, with an almost danceable beat at times, and yet is undeniably metal and has plenty of moments of aggression.

I think of Dream Troll's relation to Power Metal similar of that to Khemmis' relation to Doom. At their core, both bands are just badass rock n' roll, but are heavily influenced by their respective metal genres. Makes for a really original (and fun) sound in both cases.

I have these 2019 albums on loop (in no order of preference):

1. Imprecation - Damnatio Ad Bestias
This is absolutely crushing. Think Obituary in their prime, but played through an Iron Bonehead filter. I really enjoy this album and it's probably one of the top DM picks of the year.

2. Vultures Vengeance - The Knightlore
I wasn't impressed on first listen but this proggy-heavy metal band grew on me. Lots of killer riffs. I feel the vocals could've been stronger but it still works well.

3. Fuming Mouth - The Grand Descent
If Mammoth Grinder were more hardcore, then you'd get Fuming Mouth. This statement is probably an oversimplication but you'll get the drift. This is a fun album and it's got some really infectious grooves.

4. Krypts - Cadaver Circulation
`The Reek of Loss` is my favorite death metal song of 2019. These Finns know how to balance crushing death metal and dooooom.

The other albums that are on my list but have already been spoken highly of in this channel are:
1. Riot City - Burn the Night
2. Haunt - If Icarus could fly
3. Smoulder - Times of obscene evil and wild daring
4. Hellripper - Black Arts & Alchemy
5. Sanhedrin - The Poisoner
6. Traveler - Traveler

My only issue with the new Dream Troll is that some of the songs feel long just for the sake of being long. A little bit of editing and shortening (or not repeating some parts quite as much) would have been helpful. But it SOUNDS so fresh in every way, it makes up for that.

Since you've mentioned some of my favourite albums this year, I'm compelled to ask if you've not heard or just don't enjoy the new Helheim, Rignir? Personally, Achatius and Algleymi were contending for the top of my list until I gave that album three spins.

I'm not familiar with Helheim. Will check it out for sure, thanks!

Oshi, I forgot to mention this. Russ Tippins is such a wonderful composer. I was sold on this album from the first track, which is so beautifully crafted. Eleven Years is another masterpiece. Tanith's debut has been my go-to easy listening album when I want a break from death/black metal.

I had big expectations for that Grima album, but I'm sadly underwhelmed. It's nowhere near as good as the last one they did.

The new Screamer album is really good! It won't get the band any extra attention, but I know there are a few fans of them around here and they'll like it.

The new Falls Of Rauros Patterns In Mythology is outstanding.

So far, the only albums that moved me this year are (alphabetically):

Falls Of Rauros
Full Of Hell
Gaahls Wyrd
Tomb Mold
Waldgefluster

These albums are all excellent, and all worth checking out.

Damn, I might not be able to participate in the poll this year, as right now, I can’t come up with 10 worthy albums. Nothing else I’ve heard this year truly struck me. There were some surprises (eg Dream Theater, but even then, not top 10 worthy) and some big disappointments (most notably Astronoid). Mayhem, Blut Aus Nord, and Opeth have potential based on songs released/snippets/descriptions, but we’ll have to see.

It’s not just metal either, same dilemma for me with non-metal.

Maybe it’s me. *shrugs*

New Lord Gore is surprisingly not bad at all. Less samples, much more energetic (other two aren't bad but they plod a lot of the time), and as a bonus, the cover art isn't terrible.

I'm a bit disappointed. It's nowhere near as good as Gesundrian or War of All Against All. They went from one of the better bands in the genre to being just another war metal band. I've listened to it a couple of times and nothing stands out, very flat and boring imho. This album is indistinguishable from a lot of other war metal bands doing the same stuff over and over. Even the artwork is lazy.

I thought the new Diocletian was fairly ripping but everything about the band, especially the lyrics on this new one give me pause. Bit too fashy for my taste.

Anyone hear the new Sermon album? Reminiscent of Katatonia and quite strong indeed. Dark and moody atmosphere, cool vocals. I think it's a one man act out of the UK?

Agreed. The approach, particularly on Gesundrian, made that a killer album. that is easily my favourite of theirs. This just sounds like 'another war metal album'.

I disagree with the Diocletian posts above. This one goes by fast, and is a bit of a blur, but it has some technicality to it that previous Diocletian, and most "war metal", albums never had. This one is a grower for me.

Decided to list out the 2019 shit that I've heard so far that I'd actually recommend:
Spoiler: show
Abnormality - Sociopathic Constructs
Artificial Fear - Death By Machines
Ashbringer - Absolution
Baroness - Gold & Grey
Batushka - Панихида
Beheaded - Only Death Can Save You
Beelzebubs - Pantheon of the Nightside Gods
Birdflesh - Extreme Graveyard Tornado
Darkthrone - Old Star
Deathspell Omega The Furnaces of Palingenesia
Festerday - Iihtallan
Firespawn - Abominate
Flesh of the Stars - Mercy
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Veleno
Footprints In the Custard - A New Low
Hate - Auric Gates of Veles
Hatriot - From Days Unto Darkness
Jig-Ai - Entrails Tsunami
Kull - Exile
Lord Gore - Scalpels For Blind Surgeons
Luna - Luna
The Meads of Asphodel - Running Out of Time Doing Nothing
Memoriam - Requiem For Mankind
Misery Index - Rituals of Power
Nocturnus AD - Paradox
Pathology - Reborn to Kill
Phobia - Generation Coward
Possessed - Revelations of Oblivion
ShadowStrike - Legends of Human Spirit
VHS - We're Gonna Need Some Bigger Riffs
Vltimas - Something Wicked Marches In
Wormed - Metaportal
Wounds of Recollection - You Were a Garden of Empyrean Light
Yerûšelem - The Sublime

Then there's stuff that I enjoyed but find hard to recommend, like Evil Joe - Nuclear Vacation (not bad for what it is but my god is the production awful) and Dehumanized Deity's Everything Ends and The World Will Burn Before Us (primitive and super raw). I've only included metal, and non-cover stuff in this list.

Frozen Dreams got talked about briefly with their Summoning-esque Voices of the Arctic Winter album released earlier this year. Well, they just put out another one called Rising from the Ashes. This time, they're playing melodic/symphonic black metal in the vein of Old Man's Child, Naglfar, and Windir. It's super nerdy sounding, but I actually can't get enough of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxPuG-1HC-k

I just discovered this band based on the newest album, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I went back and checked out their other stuff and enjoyed "Fallen in dark slumbering" as well.

That looked so pretentious I had to listen, and was not disappointed. But it's worthwhile on its musical merits - avante-garde black, crazy vocals and bass runs, interesting orchestration and not overlong. Thanks!

He's also the bass player from Pavor and he's much better at doing that than being a vocalist imo. I wonder if we will ever get any new material from Pavor...
