Yeah, I am really excited for this release (I loved the demo!). I also totally agree about Arthur Rizk; he's my #1 current favorite producer, without a doubt.

Children of Bodom's latest is also pretty good. Fairly consistent quality wise with some really great material scattered throughout.

I do love Children of Bodom's Hexed. A lot sounded like a mix of their early material and Hate Crew Deathroll. Some songs do sound weird though! *ehem*Hecate's Nightmare*ehem* Also this album's Angels Don't Kill doesn't do much for me.

I can't say the same for Lahmia's Resilience, however. Maybe because I've heard LOADS of melodeath albums when I started listening to metal, but what I do know is that they did not do anything in this album that could make them stand out.

I thought the Lahmia album was decent, but as far as melodeath goes I prefer the new Brymir album.

Well it is decent, as in they play their instruments well (dunno about the vocals though) and stuff, but as for the composition aspect, it doesnt do much unfortunately. Nothing stood out when I listened to it to the point that it kind of turned to a chore for me.

It's more than just that they play their instruments well to me. There are some pretty sweet riffs scattered across the album, although just not enough good material for it to enter into regular rotation for me.

I've really been enjoying Thormesis - The Sixth. One of my favorite bands currently, they are really consistent in quality between albums.

While it's true that they play their instruments well and that some riffs are pretty sweet, nothing really stands out unfortunately. Maybe it's because I'm well past melodeath from the bunch of albums that I have listened before, but their album is basically a rehash of other bands' albums.

I just heard the new Iron Griffin album. It's a little short and repetitive, but I enjoyed the sound. I'll give it a few more listens, but I doubt it will contend for the AOTY list.

So far I've been mostly enjoying Critical Defiance, Festerday, and Magnabolt. I have some others ranked, but these are the ones so far that have really stuck out to me.

Oh I know - it's not on the archives. But I guess that you all know about them anyway and you either like them or not. For those who do I'm happy to report the fact that this is their best album ever. I like it a lot and it still gives me much pleasure to hear Martin play drums. Perhaps the album will fade away during the year but as of right now this is the best album in 2019 so far.

Do you think so?

It sounds less technical to me. :nono:

I know this album was actually released last year, but The Void Engineers by Cosmic Atrophy is due for a physical release very soon and it's one of the best death metal albums i've heard in recent years.

Anxiously waiting for the pre-order to go live :P

Perhaps it is less technical, wasn't really paying attention to that.
But I went back to it yesterday and to me it still is their best album so far.

That is a good one, albeit fairly front-loaded. I like the Bolzer riff on "Agony" :).

"Gods Without Name" by Aoratos is another superb Black Metal release.

Fans of Nightbringer, Bestia Arcana and Akhlys will love this album...

Listening to this I thought "damn this guy really nailed that sound, it's even TOO imitative" but then it's actually Naas Alcameth lol. I guess if the man wants to consider it a separate project he has every right, and I'll buy anything he makes, but it made me laugh.

I had heard this one hyped and of course I love NSP. First couple tracks had me scratching my head, by then it just takes off. Killer album with an absolutely phenomenal vocal performance! This one will only get better with more listens, too.

Man, the new Swallow the Sun sounds killer. The second song, The Crimson Crown, is utterly gorgeous. I vaguely recall trying to get into these guys about 5 or so years ago and not really feeling it. Is it time to revisit them or is this album a departure from their usual sound?

Predatoria - Casting Shadows

Some solid Bolt Thrower worship here. Nothing too fancy or ground breaking, just straight up headbanging Death Metal. Hopefully this album can hit the spot for those of us who are saddened that we won't see another release from Bolt Thrower.

Midnight Dice's three song demo just released this morning. Seeing how the band consists entirely of Satan's Hallow members minus the main songwriter, I'm impressed with how well they're able to sustain that vibe.

Ondfødt - Dödsrikets Kallelse Just found this yesterday and it even has a good review from Autothrall! It's kind of black n rolly, similar to Darkthrone's Hate Them, but a bit more aggressive I think.
https://digital.immortalfrostproductions.com/album/d-dsrikets-kallelse

Meillä Oli Vain Yö - Mustan Metallin Muistelot LOL? This is pretty much a clinic in lo-fi black metal that sounds like Nattens Madrigal part II. I can't help but like it.

I'm finally getting around to listening to that new Funereal Presence album. I really like it, and the riffs are so intricate and creative that it's going to take some more listens to fully absorb. A really strong album though for sure.

No mention of Vircolac - Masque yet? I found their previous EP already very satisfying (as well as their live performance), and Masque fully fulfilled
my high expectations.

Moon Tooth - Crux

Image

This band is all over the place. I guess it's progressive metal at the core, but is wanders off en every god damn direction known to man. It's a fun listen though; really good songs, fine production and excellent musicianship. I'm thinking about this as a modern djent-ish, progressive version of Scatterbrains "Here comes trouble". Without the funny lyrics.

Vltimas – Something Wicked Marches In

Yes, yes - you all know this band. And you hate supergroups. But Morbid Angel, Mayhem and Cryptopsy together does really make a surprisingly good album. Killer riffs and Vincent really sounds better than in a long time. And of course the drums are fast. So for me this was quite a nice surprise.

Ellende - Lebensnehmer

Image

How many one-man-back-metal-band can the world produce? We will never know, but here is one more. Ellende hail from Austria and play atmospheric black metal. I haven't heard the previous albums but this is really, really good! Wonderful songs and depressing as hell :) Well done!

^I kept overlooking the last Ellende album because I thought it was too ambient or folky or something, big mistake. I just bought the full discography after listening to the new album. You're right it is quite depressing, but also really chill and fun to listen to.

Pretty pumped to check out this new Frozen Crown album. Their release from last year was one of my favourites and def one of the better power metal releases of the year. Was pleasantly surprised to see that they were already coming out with a new one. The single Neverending is quite good.

Glad to see this get a mention. It seems like supergroups are so often a disappointment, but this is one case where all the members were able to create a wholly enjoyable and cohesive album while still highlighting their individual talents. Some really nice riffs on this thing and I agree that Dave sounds great. Definitely one of the bigger surprises of the year for me.

It's pretty much the same. Not that that's a bad thing, but as you can imagine their sound didn't really change over the course of 13 months. Still, one of the better PM bands to come around in recent years.
