Downcross - What Light Covers Not is excellent. They also released another album earlier in the year which was also really good but I think I prefer What Light.

Plenty of good stuff this year but nothing I can feel really excited for.
Just to mention the most interesting ones:

White Ward - Love Exchange Failure
Somn - The All-devouring
Tomorrowillbeworse - Hiraeth
Vukari - Aevum
The Great Old Ones - Cosmicism

Reveal! - Scissorgod

Big chance this is my AOTY
Original, psychotic/psychedelic punkish black metal with great bloodthirsty vocals. Their whole discography is very solid, and the new one is just a pinnacle of their efforts. Goddamn great!!
https://youtu.be/4l7BxuxEo6M

Perverted Ceremony / Witchcraft - Nighermancie / Black Candle (2019)
Extremely dirty, blasphemous minimalist black metal. Many bands are trying so hard to be evil, and many times they fail and are just
laughable, but these guys are not that case, I like how this split is effortlessly producing the right authentic occult vibe. I dont often fall for this kind of almost "bedroom" production, but here it works perfectly.

Vomitron - Vomitron 2 is really good

The weird instrumental melodic death metal is still strong after those two NES cover albums (which were also really good)

Midnight Prey's "Uncertain Times" is really awesome and I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. Still have a bunch of albums I have to listen to but this is a contender for album of the year.

Agree, Avslut is pretty good.

A few more from 2019 that I have enjoyed, and haven't seen mentioned:

Paganizer - The Tower of the Morbid. Look, Paganizer is never going to be super fancy death metal, but they've been turning out solid release after solid release for 20 years. They've got their thing and they stick to it.

No One Gets Out Alive - Die Like the Rest. Listed here as Brutal Death Metal/Bluegrass, which is just as weird as it sounds. There's no way for the ear to reconcile the guttural vocals with a banjo. There just isn't. There are also some speaking bits where Andreas Schüßler (it's a one man project) affects a US southern redneck hillbilly thing, even though he's German. Very unusual and fun act.

Immanifest - Macrobial. Nine years after their debut EP Qliphotic, they finally get this together. It's... a bit all over the place in parts, but pretty good technical/symphonic metal.

Ancient Bards - Origine. This has been mentioned, I'm sure of it, but I'm giving it a shout out again. Any fan of female fronted power metal has to hear this album. Fucking stunning, and on my AOTY list.

I know it has been discussed to death, but I am really enjoying the new Nile. I'm not much of a reviewer, I would just like to say it's pretty good.

Cage - Science of Annhilation (Re-Annihilated)

Normally I would scoff at remixes, re-recordings but in this case I think Cage really nailed it. The original album had a very lousy production and an atrocious drum sound. Both of those are improved here and the re-recorded drums sound great. It adds a whole layer of punch to the album. Good move Cage!

Hmm? I haven't seen any negativity towards it so far, it's my #1 album of this year, actually.

The new Fleshcrawl album is very good, a great return after 12 years away - great, classic death metal with quality songwriting.

My pleasure! Glad I was able to share. I feel guilty for not paying more attention to Osmose Productions. They were one of the most important labels in my youth and I somehow have not given many of their new releases the time of day. I’ll be ordering this vinyl from them soon.

This was always such a good band. Glad to see they're still going. Power metal like older Nocturnal Rites, heavy and mean but still upbeat.

I listened to a lot of Death Metal this year, here's my top ten:

I waded through a ton of crap to make these selections.

ok, not really expected but I am enjoying the latest Rings of Saturn quite a lot, very catchy melodic solo's. Probably a lot of editing but the end result is great imo.

Really enjoying Condemned to Dream - Black Emerald Cold. While nothing groundbreaking, the riffage is sick.

I dunno if I'd include this album--it's just English versions of old songs. Good songs, but not 2019 songs. :[

The Drowning - The Radiant Dark

Hello? Why hasn't anyone mentioned this album yet? It's a brilliant piece of doom/death from Wales.
Hell, it might even get a place in my top ten as it stands now. Anyway, it needs to be mentioned in this thread.

here's a rather nice, mellow atmoblack album i just stumbled across, from a band called mádra, which looks to be in the queue to be added to the archives atm... could be a contender for debut of the year i suppose

You may also enjoy the self-titled debut album by Orm, it's a bit of a change of style, less long-form than 'Ir' and with a stronger mid-tempo pace, sort of hellenic or Bathory-esque in sound. I like both albums but the new one has less of that epic vibe going on, and as a consequence sounds somewhat more like run of the mill modern atmo-bm.

Ya, I'll give it a listen for sure. I noticed the last album had much shorter songs earlier and wondered whether that meant the style was different as well. Gonna let this new one sink in for now but I'll check the debut out sometime.

A couple of my 2019 favorites that haven't been mentioned here:

Tyranni - Baron af Avoghetens Smärta: https://mysticismproductions.bandcamp.c ... ens-sm-rta

Ice cold synth-laden Swedish BM, very much in the vein of other Ancient Records acts (Gnipahålan, Bekëth Nexëhmü...). Swartadauþuz is not directly credited to be involved according to their MA page but it sure as hell sounds like he is behind this.

Sulphuric Night - Forever Cursed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RhXcFggg-U

Amazing debut full-length by Sulphuric Night from the depths of the underground black metal scene of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The raw Black Plague Circle sound is still there but production is a bit more polished compared to demo material. Album of the year favorite for me.

I also feel like I have to mention Lamp of Murmuur who has three demos in 2019, all of which are excellent quality raw US black metal. Their latest demo Chasing the Path of the Hidden Master is probably the strongest one yet, great raw sound with nice riffing and a great vocal performance. Sadly only one track from the album is currently available digitally (full album was in yt for a few days but was taken down...): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL_HOEh1REQ
