It's common that bands cover songs from an earlier era where music was less heavy, like thrash bands covering trad metal songs and death metal bands covering thrash songs. But what are some good covers where the band covering are from a "lighter" genre and maybe have cleaner vocals than the original? I'm not talking about banjo versions of Cannibal Corpse songs or whatever, but regular/serious metal covers.

Examples:
Power metal band Pharaoh covering technical thrash metal band Coroner's Tunnel of Pain:
Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwTG5-NshUE
Cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp0YSjSzEeY

Power metal band Sabaton covering melodic death metal band Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God:
Original: https://amonamarth.bandcamp.com/track/t ... hunder-god
Cover: https://sabaton.bandcamp.com/track/twil ... hunder-god

EDIT: I added the word "metal" to the thread title, so that the genre confusion in some of the early posts is prevented.

I find this is the most common thing in pop music right now is taking hard rock/rock songs and watering them down and rendering them bland and faceless commercial pop tunes.

However the Tori Amos cover of Raining Blood is quite cool.

Good topic but i can't think of a single example. I know there's probably a few but i think it's rare for lighter bands to cover heavier music. It's a lot more common the other way around.

This is one of my favourite covers of all time, and has been since it came out in 2001. I would absolutely love to hear Tori take a swing at a black metal song this way (Mgla perhaps?)

I would definitely be intrigued with that!

Bizarrely, David Bowie's "Hallo Spaceboy" sounds a lot more aggressive/heavy than Pagan Mind's cover of it.

Wolf covered Moonspell's Alma Mater...I haven't listen to that in a looong time, but I think it's less heavier than the original.

Powerwolf did a decent cover of Amon Amarth's Gods of war Arise.

Pretty much any song of later Amon Amarth can be easily turned into power/heavy metal if you tune up and make the singer sing the tremolo picked riffs

Not sure if Andy Rehfeldt's covers count for you but he rewrites songs in a different genre and is quite good at it:

Not metal but Cash's cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage is one I can think of right now.

There is this absolutely beautiful cover of the Windir song "Likbor". The cover is performed by Weh, with only acoustic guitars and clean vocals :

That reminded me of Chris Brokaw's cover of Vlad Tepes "Drink the Poetry of the Celtic Disciple".

I think Dark Arena (USPM) covered Death's "Lack of Comprehension".

I know it's the opposite of what you asked, but Nevermore's cover of The Sound of Silence absolutely slays.

I have a couple of clarifications/objections regarding some of the stuff in the thread:

1. The opening post says "regular/serious metal covers". I guess I have to add the word "metal" to the thread title...
2. Obviously posts like the one above where it's just someone posting a cover they enjoy are not what the thread is for...

I'd like this thread to be a place to collect a specific type of (apparently) very rare phenomenon in metal, so let's not clog it up with irrelevant stuff.

Anyway, I revived the thread since thrash band Exumer now released their new album which has as one of its bonus tracks a cover of the death metal band Entombed's Supposed to Rot:
Original: https://entombedband.bandcamp.com/track/supposed-to-rot
Cover: https://exumerofficial.bandcamp.com/tra ... onus-track

I picked the same band, but their Barathrum cover came to my mind first for whatever reason: https://youtu.be/XLMrM1T3rr0 (it's some 50 minutes in; I forgot how to timestamp links and my phone blows anyway).
