Zakk Wylde and friends aka Zakk Sabbath have decided to rerecord the first Sabbath record in an analogue studio direct to two-inch tape over the space of 24 hours.

https://www.merhq.net/store/vertigo

"VERTIGO will celebrate the 50 yr anniversary of the debut album by Black Sabbath. Faithfully rerecorded and documented in its entirety!

Vertigo Records issued the debut album by Black Sabbath, on Friday the 13th of 1970, and the world was never the same. Legendarily recorded in a single day in October 1969, the earthmoving self-titled set closed the book on hippie optimism with its dark magic and ushered in a brand new genre, setting the metal template for decades to come.

Exactly 50 years to the date later, ZAKK SABBATH will celebrate the first chapter in the Sabbath catalog with a reverently rendered tribute, simply titled VERTIGO. Our aim is to faithfully rerecord the album in the spirit of the original recordings: live in a fully analog studio, direct to two inch tape, in a single 24 hour period. A film crew will document the process, culminating in a single album and DVD release limited to just 500 copies and delivered to purchasers on February 13, 2020.

Zakk Sabbath’s Vertigo will never be available commercially or digitally in any other format beyond these initial 500, which will be delivered in a single package containing a vinyl LP, CD, digital download code, and DVD. We’ve partnered with Magnetic Eye Records, a cornerstone of the industry strongly rooted in the very sub-genre spawned by Sabbath, to ensure maximum quality. We’re asking you to join us in our continued celebration of the greatest heavy metal band of all time and the record that started it all! Take this journey with us through this project and be among the 500 faithful to receive the total doom filled package.

In Sabbath We Trust — Zakk, Blasko, Joey"

^ That was my initial thoughts too. That album already exists, and it sounds perfect even today. However, I think the process might be more interesting than the final product. Seeing how they recorded the album in 69 might be cool and valuable for musicians too see how they worked with what they had back in the day.

I think it's awesome to want to go back to old school recording techniques - though I'd just prefer new and original music to come out of it, is all. But I guess tributes will always be a thing.

I really don't see any point in doing this, but as long as they're not taking the original off the shelves in favor of the "update" (hi, Sharon and Dave) I guess I'm ok with it.

This is an interesting experiment.

Like others said, any pinch harmonics at all will ruin it.

I am also concerned that Zakk's vocals won't be good enough.

Maybe I just sound like a cranky asshole by saying this, but why would anybody listen to a remake when they could just listen to the original? Is the original not good enough or what? It's like having enough money to buy a brand new Ferrari, but buying a third-rate ripoff for the same amount of money.
I think there is absolutely no point to this existing besides money and some extra publicity ("those are the guys that re-made the first Black Sabbath album!"), imo. I've never listened to Zakk Wylde's music (that I know of), but this doesn't exactly make me interested in hearing anything else he did.

Bands are desperate for attention these days and this is one way to get it.

Yeah, this is not very interesting. I have to admit the st is an album that hasn't aged well, appart from the title song which is one of the best metal tracks ever recorded I never feel like listening to the rest of the album. Too bluesy for me. Having Zakk Wylde re-record it is probably the less interesting scenario here. I don't mind the occasional cover though, there are some great examples.

He did cover Into the Void and it was not good.

He'd be better off re-recording Pantera's Power Metal. I'm 100% serious.

No way, Zakk is a master of tension. He'll wait until the third note.

As long as the songwriters are paid their due royalties, they can't stop anyone from covering their music.

No More Tears is my favorite Ozzy album, in part because of his guitar playing, so I was pretty happy when they reunited.

I'm sort of surprised to see all the hate for Zakk, I really haven't followed BLS or his solo stuff, but I respect him as a guitar player and song-writer, and as I said, the Ozzy material with him on guitar is some of my favorite. In interviews, he's always seemed like a down to earth and insightful guy.

It's a little strange to me how on this forum, people are so quick to attack musicians who have made it for themselves, and in this case, he's just doing a fun project/experiment to celebrate this album. I suspect it comes from a place of jealousy and/or insecurity. And what would any of you do if you saw him or another musician you don't like in real life? Tell them they suck, or that they should quit? Yeah right.

Some of those old school techniques are very cool and produce things you don't hear often anymore.

But I am sick of tribute bands these days. There are a ton of them it seems, and only a few can really pull it off.

Really? I always thought someone had to approve a cover. like Type Os cover of Summer Breeze was denied until they changed the lyrics.
