I had my mind blown twice this week. found out that Lars Ulrich has a small, but proper, acting part in a movie about Ernest Hemingway: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0423455/ imdb lists it as a TV movie, but Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen are in it, so it's not your average cannon fodder. the movie's about Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell tolls" (see wot they did there?). couldn't find the whole bit with Lars on youtube, but you can briefly see him (and hear his incessantly annoying voice) in the trailer:

I worship Hemingway so I can't comment on the movie but if you really want to know what I thought about it
Spoiler: show
meh.

second mindblowing fact, a german TV series https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5753856/ includes Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill" as a... let's say plot point.

it's a really good TV series, too!

so I thought I'd post these here and ask if you know more such occurences. please avoid obvious stuff everyone should know like Airheads, Hesher, Chemical Wedding, River's Edge, etc.

some more stuff (I know of) in the same vein:

Lars plays himself in Get him to the Greek:

Jag Panzer's "Harder than steel" is featured on "Dark Places". that's big news bcs the movie's based on a book by the same writer who did "Gone girl", and features big names like Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks and Chloë Grace Moretz and was supposed to be BIG, but it flopped, which is fair as it's a really bad movie.

Rush:
I could write a long article on how many times I've seen them in some way or another in big films since they became "cool", but I'll briefly mention "I Love You, Man", the 2112 album art showing up a gazillion times in "Ready player one", the same as a poster in "Summer of '84" and this hilarious Lifeson cameo:

last but not least, "Bad Teacher", with Cameron Diaz, features two Judas Priest songs, plus Dio and a more expected Whitesnake. I laughed my a** off with this movie.

please post more, if you know any. the idea is big name movie / not so mainstream metal band/song/artist. no need to list every single movie with a metal song on the soundtrack :)

apologies if all that's been mentioned before in band topics, or the movie and TV threads. I wanted to try and collect them all in one place...

The 1986 film "River's Edge" has a bunch of Metal Blade Records bands/songs in it:

Sabbath’s Iron Man in Iron Man 1
Metallica’s The Four Horsemen in X-Men Apocalypse
There’s a Megadeth song in a recentish iPhone commercial. Not sure which song but it’s off of the first album.
I’ve heard Sabbath’s Paranoid in a handful of movies.
Supernatural has a ton of “classic rock” bands. To name a few:
- Black Sabbath
- Rush
- Ratt
- Metallica
- Quiet Riot
- Def Leppard
- Scorpions
- Ozzy Osbourne
- Spinaltap
- Soundgarden
- Queensryche
- Alice in Chains

A cheesy cover version of Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil was used in an episode of 1980's TV show, Knight Rider.

How about Suffocation being featured as an add to the History Channel?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e9HTfRUIC4

Everybody and their mothers by now know about Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura, but it'd interesting to see if any other extreme metal bands appeared like that in other movies. It's easy to have the big names on movies and series, but how about more extreme bands?

Wild at Heart by David Lynch had Nicholas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem DeFoe, Isabella Rossallini and Crispin Glover in the cast, and featured a probably not very well known (I think?) band by the name of Powermad. They also appear playing live in the film. Pretty sweet track really.

On Clive Owen, Shoot 'Em Up has Motorhead's Ace of Spades early in the beginning. Breaking Bad has the fictional band Twaughthammer which I'd rather consider to be a metal spoof, given the name, umlauts and all.
Iron Man's feature in Iron Man.
Disgorge appearing in a flash, blasting from a TV in Paranormal Activity was about as mainstream as brutal dm ever went, if that counts.

those last three are what I was hoping for... I had meadowland in my sights for a while, will have to watch it now. maybe that german series, too :D

that KFC commercial in the old threads Dembo posted reminded me of that Abgott / Toshiba malarkey:

I never watched the show myself, but I've been told that the TV series Limitless (based on the movie of the same name, the one where Bradley Cooper takes magic pills that give him Big Brain Boy Powers) prominently features loads of metal. I guess the main character is a metalhead and they make it a plot point somehow. Like he hides his pills in the sleeve of a Skeletonwitch vinyl and such.

Then of course there's this classic Sportscenter commercial from 2012

Fun thing is that Clayton is actually a big Slayer fan in real life so it just makes the total absurdity of the commercial even funnier to me. I can't find a lot of info on what song is actually playing in the commercial (speculation seems to be that it's just a generic metal riff made up for the ad) but there's tons of cool shit in the background. Peep that Hail of Bullets poster!

Two Sepultura songs ("Desperate Cry" and "Inner Self") are featured in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, although "Inner Self" is only heard for about two seconds.

"Foaming at the Mouth" by Rigor Mortis was heard in a scene in the Hulk Hogan movie Mr. Nanny.

Wrestling with My Family had Iron Maiden songs, when the kids were on their way to practice at the gym. I also coulda sworn Paige's brother had a Mayhem t-shirt on in one scene, though it was mostly obscured by his baby.

Alice has been in quite a few films (Wayne's World of course, one of the A Nightmare on Elm Streets to name two).

I recently rewatched Justified (my favourite TV show), and clocked a character wearing an Accept shirt in a few of the episodes (think it was the second season). Never noticed it first time round.

Cannibal Corpse performs live on one of the Ace Ventura movies - Jim Carrey is a big fan of them apparently.

Hardy's / Carl's Junior uses The Ultra-Violence by Death Angel in one of their flamethrower burgers (or whatever) commercials.

Apple uses Killing is My Business by Megadeth to advertise their shitty iPhones.

Exmortus played on a Virgin Mobile commercial awhile back.

It runs as an along-credits soundtrack.
Jim Carrey is a metalhead I suppose, I saw one interview where he did a Napalm Death impression.

Also when Charlie is reviving Bumblebee in Bumblebee, she is dorning Motorhead.

What??? Venom’s Countess Bathory in a super mainstream super hero movie?? When does this song play during the movie and for what duration? Is it just played during the ending credits?

I’m really surprised. I would’ve expected the movie to use like a more commercial sounding version of the song like for example if Metallica covered the song and they use that instead of the murky 1982 Venom version

Lars Ulrich on that comedy with Jonah Hill working for some rock star whose name I forgot
Motorhead's Ace of Spades on House M.D
Fear Factory on Mortal Kombat movie
Slayer on Bride of Chucky, also some other lesser metal bands
That atrocious episode of Skins with the headbanger guy features Angel of Death
The Day of the Beast also have some headbanger guy and a Morbid Angel LP appears on one scene

Post subject:  Re: Metal songs and artists in mainstream film and TV

I was going to mention that Duck Dodgers episode.

"Go Down Fighting" and "On Your Feet" by Shok Paris are heard in the 1987 science fiction movie The Hidden.

The 1994 horror movie Night of the Demons 2 has two songs by Morbid Angel featured in it, "Vengeance is Mine" and "Rapture".

"The Heart Beneath" by Celtic Frost was used in a promo by some anime studio many years back.

An appearance by a metal band not yet mentioned was that in 2013, Municipal Waste was featured in a VANS commercial.

Some references to metal include the show Californication, as David Duchovny's character, an author, has written books with the titles South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, and God Hates Us All. These are all titles of albums by Slayer.

The movie Jennifer's Body takes part of its plot from the same real life murder that led to the victim's parents filing a lawsuit against Slayer.

In an episode of Elementary, there is music by Carcass used, and there is a character in that episode whose last name is Schuldiner (obviously a reference to Chuck Schuldiner of Death).

Also, going back to songs, I remember Scott Ian of Anthrax said he was pretty disappointed that when he heard a Judge Dredd movie was being made in the 1990s, Anthrax weren't asked to have "I Am the Law" used in it. Then when he saw the movie, he was glad the song wasn't used in the movie, given his hatred for it. It also wasn't used in the later Judge Dredd movie, Dredd, released in 2013. ("Darkness Descends" by Dark Angel, which is also based around Judge Dredd, also wasn't used in either Judge Dredd movie.)
