Consider this lineup:

Geoff Tate - vocals
Chris DeGarmo - guitar
Scott Rockenfield - drums
etc.

If this line-up existed (long shot I know), wouldn't it be the legitimate Queensryche?

Also consider this one:

John Arch - vocals
Frank Aresti - guitar
Victor Arudini - guitar
Joe Dibiase - bass
Steve Zimmerman (or Mark Zonder) - drums

I'm much more likely to purchase an album from this band than the current version of Fates Warning.

I find it interesting when all the ex-members replace the band leader and have their own version of the band. This happened with Yngwie and Johannson when he was "replaced" by Michael Romeo but everyone else was from his band.

It even looks like this could happen with Judas Priest.

Anyone else find this phenomenon odd/interesting?

It is an interesting phenomenon for sure. I have a theory that Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske collaborating so well outside of Helloween in Unisonic helped pave the way for Pumpkins United. I've also always considered The Devil You Know to be a Black Sabbath album under the Heaven & Hell name though that's probably not the most concrete example of this sort of thing.

It's also funny how bands like Iced Earth, Annihilator, Dio, and Pentagram went through so many lineup changes that they literally do have spin-offs that consist almost entirely of former members. As much as I love hearing about these sorts of setups, the results always seem rather mixed due to the "other guys" generally not being as good at songwriting as the guys that kick them out.

Could probably do it with Royal Hunt.

John West (or Mark Boals) - vocals
Marcus Jidell - guitar
Steen Mogensen - bass
Allen Sorensen - drums

Obviously it would sound different since it's a four-piece band with no keys, but I'd still be more intrigued by it than the current lineup.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Jim Matheos, but his idea of a good riffs and mine - in 2019 - are wildly different.

The last Fates Warning and Arch/Matheos were both great. His riffs are different now but I don't think either would've worked with a bunch of more aggressive, traditional style metal riffs, as opposed to the cleaner prog style ones he does now.
