06. Borknagar - True North
07. Cattle Decapitation - Death Atlas
08. Paladin - Ascension
09. Grand Magus - Wolf God
10. Avslut - Tyranni

---

Just outside the top 10:

Soen - Lotus
Sâver - They Came with Sunlight
The Drowning - The Radiant Dark
Fvneral Fvkk - Carnal Confessions
ORO - Djupets Kall
White Ward - Love Exchange Failure
Herod - Sombre Dessein
Numenorean - Adore
Alcest - Spiritual Instinct
In Mourning - Garden of Storms
Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave
Car Bomb - Mordial
Obsequiae - The Palms of Sorrowed Kings

Soen had the number two spot until I realized they aren't in the archives.
The number one spot was the only one that I was super sure of, no other album even comes close to Skraeckoedlans masterpiece.
For me, the year as a whole has been pretty mediocre.

I would have had Soen in my top 10 as well. The songs just resonate with me. Fantastic stuff.

You guys are total stunners. It really looked like it was gonna be a low turnout this year but I've gotten like 50 ballots in the last two or three days. I guess y'all really do wait until the last possible second, lol. We're only a few away from once again breaking the record for overall ballots!

Posting to see MA time and to check whether I made it. Might as well post my list then I guess:

1. Waste of Space Orchestra - Syntheosis
2. Funereal Presence - Achatius
3. Helheim - Rignir
4. Seer - Vol 1
5. Lord Mantis - Universal Death Church
6. Esoctrilihum - The Telluric Ashes of the Ö Vrth Immemorial Gods
7. Myphyrming - Algleymi
8. Blut Aus Nord - Hallucinogen
9. Árstíðir lífsins - Saga Á Tveim Tungum I Vápn Ok Viðr
10. Cult of Luna - A Dawn To Fear

A tough one for sure, a lot of interesting albums that didn't make the cut from, amongst others, King Gizzard, Ghaal's Wyrd, Sinmara, Mord'a'Stigmata, Warforged, Blood Incantation, Phobonoid, Dark Throne, Cattle Decapitation and Mayhem. Actually quite a good year for black metal, lots of interesting approaches to the genre. If I listened to the Vastum album earlier it would almost certainly be on here but I wouldn't know where to place it now (and what to replace) after 3 or 4 listens. Also really enjoyed the new Pelican and Leprous but couldn't really qualify either as metal even though both artists are on MA. I will second a comment I read earlier in the thread that extreme metal certainly took a year off. Warforged was really cool and I'm sure the Cattle Decapitation will grow on me with time but it seems that novel approaches to the classic sounds of folk, black and death metal were the order of the year.

Also, @BastardHead, are you planning on doing a poll for the "Best Albums of the 2010's" by any chance?

Eventually, it's pretty inevitable. Probably June/July.

I have to say this has been a tremendous year for both black metal and traditional/doom metal. Also we had some big names that aren't allowed on MA to come out this year including Tool and Slipknot....which I'm kinda lukewarm on Slipknot but if Tool was allowed on this site their new one would definitely crack my top 10.

I think BH should have to cancel his NYE plans and at exactly 12:00:01, Jan 1 2020 REVEAL THE RESULTS TO HIS EAGER AUDIENCE. (Me.)
Spoiler: show
I'm obviously joking, I hope you have more fun this NYE than me, who is refreshing the same 4 websites over and over

Here was my list

1. Altar of Oblivion - The Seven Spirits
2. Smoulder - Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring
3. Traveler - Traveler
4. Riot City - Burn the Night
5. Grand Magus - Wolf God

8. Sacred Monster - Worship the Weird
9. Ice Ages - Nullify
10. Magic Circle - Departed Souls

Best debut: Smoulder - Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring

I predict my first two picks will be horribly shafted in the results :(

Yeah I've not heard much buzz around those first two albums; certainly a shame with Smoulder as that's a pretty damn good album. Traveler on the other hand...

Quite excited to see how this turns out; especially since unlike 2016 or 2017 the hype train isn't backing one album above all else; there isn't a single 'sure thing' as polls like this go.

I would have voted for Nullify myself, but it's of course not a metal album.

Smoulder had a fantastic opening song, but the rest of the album didn't live up to that opener. She's a fantastic singer though.

I 68.7745% agree with this! The first track is one of the best songs of the year, imo. And the rest of the album is damn good, it's just SO anti-climactic because the first song is leaps and bounds above the rest.

Seriously? Darkthrone is a big enough name, and that was a well-received enough album, that I think they will be on there somewhere. Véhémence also got some heavy praise here (they were on my top 10 too), as did Obsequiae. Also, Kostnateni was on BastardHead's own top 10, so it's already guaranteed to be safe from Rando Hell since it has at least 2 votes.

I posted this in the results thread, but I might as well do so here, as well:

Quote:
Glad to see I'm continuing to keep the Rando Corner well-stocked. As for last-minute discoveries, I must've confused Traveler for something else, because I didn't check them out until now. Pretty slick stuff with an old-school production style, and I'll have to add it to my collection. Back on-topic, my Top 10 this year was pretty subdued, as I don't feel as strongly about this list as I have previous year-end lists. Nothing really approached the 10/10 level for me this time around. That's not to say I don't like the albums on my list, but rather they wouldn't have cracked the Top 5 in previous years. But anyway, without further bullshit, here's my Top 10 list:

#10. Metalite - Biomechanicals
This was far weaker than the debut, but otherwise a fine mixture of power metal and pop sensibilities. Won't be up everyone's alley, but I like it. Wish it lived up to Heroes in Time, though.
Top Three Tracks: "Warrior," "Eye of the Storm," and "Far From the Sanctuary"

#9. NorthTale - Welcome to Paradise
No one else liked this? Huh. Okay. I thought this was very promising, reminding me a lot of mid-era Nocturnal Rites mixed with a dash of Freedom Call. Very fun and energizing songwriting all throughout.
Top Three Tracks: "Bring Down the Mountain," "Welcome to Paradise," and "If Angels are Real"

#8. Crystal Eyes - Starbourne Traveler
A late addition, and a welcome one. I'm always a sucker for bands influenced by (or straight-up worshipping) Running Wild, and that's precisely what I got with this band. The album follows suit, and I quite enjoyed it.
Top Three Tracks: "Gods of Disorder," "Corridors of Time," and "Side By Side"

#7. Control the Storm - Forevermore
I love female-fronted power metal. Control the Storm are female-fronted power metal. This is an open-and-shut case, Your Honor.
Top Three Tracks: "Strike to Defend," "Chaotic Mind," and "Darkest Fantasy"

#6. Overkill - The Wings of War
I am forever amazed that Overkill have been around as long as they have and continue to kick ass. The Grinding Wheel was a bit of a step down, but The Wings of War steps right back up to where we're supposed to be. I'm happy with it, at least.
Top Three Tracks: "A Mother's Prayer," "Welcome to the Garden State," and "Last Man Standing"

#5. Scarleth - Vortex
If you're a melodic power metal fan and you missed this, y'all bitches be missing out. These guys popped out of nowhere and they're already this good? Hot damn. One of the bigger surprises of the year for me.
Top Three Tracks: "Guardian Angel," "Break the Chains," and "Be What You Are"

#4. Avantasia - Moonglow
This was nowhere near as strong as Ghostlights was, but at least the dip in quality isn't too steep. This album's got a lot of filler, but the good stuff's REALLY good.
Top Three Tracks: "The Raven Child," "Book of Shallows," and "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" (Honorable Mention to the first half of "Ghost in the Moon," which would've topped them all if it weren't for the second half)

#3. Mary's Blood - Confessions
Only 3rd place in a relatively weak year? Yeesh. That's almost as slightly-above-average as FATE was, guys! You're slippin'!
Top Three Tracks: "Mermaid Serenade," "Labyrinth of the Abyss," and "VirtuaReaL"

#2. Idle Hands - Mana
Goth rock and heavy metal need to co-mingle more often, because this was a delightful surprise. Scratches the same itch that Type O Negative does, though they don't sound all that similar, so that's quite an accomplishment.
Top Three Tracks: "Blade and the Will," "Mana," and "Nightfall"

#1. Dragonforce - Extreme Power Metal
Yep, this sure is a good Dragonforce album. It's been a while since we've had one.
Top Three Tracks: "Strangers," "Razorblade Meltdown," and "Cosmic Power of the Infinite Shred Machine" (Honorable Mention to "My Heart Will Go On," which is enjoyable while also being hilarious)

Runner Ups:
Ancient Bards - Origine (another enjoyable Ancient Bards album, but not particularly memorable)
Beast in Black - From Hell With Love (too hit-or-miss, and not nearly as intense as Berserker was)
Dialith - Extinction Six (another hit-or-miss album, would've been top-notch otherwise)
Induction - Induction (no individual song stands out from the crowd, but all of it is very solid)
Freedom Call - M.E.T.A.L. (yep, this sure is a good modern Freedom Call album)

I'll chime in with my list as well:

1. Esoteric - A Pyrrhic Existence
2. Obsequiae - The Palms of Sorrowed Kings
3. Wilderun - Veil of Imagination
4. Thanatonaut - Interstellar
5. Warforged - I: Voice
6. Blut aus Nord - Hallucinogen
7. Mizmor - Cairn
8. Numenorean - Adore
9. Inter Arma - Sulphur English
10. Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race

I must say it was very difficult to make this list, as many of the albums that didn't make my top 10 I classify as excellent albums. 2019 was a very strong year for metal IMO.
