There must be thousands, particularly in thrash, death & black metal...

And please don't go too crazy within a single post and list dozens (it's not a contest), but maybe 1 - 3 or whatever that you personally think are cool and, without posting the entire song, maybe one or two phrases or a verse/chorus which contain the reference.

I'll begin with 2 easy ones. From Marduk's Plague Angel, Throne Of Rats:

Plague upon plague
Black boil redemption
On this sea of rats shall I set my throne
Halo of fleas
Blood puke salvation
Only fire is now clean enough to touch your soul
Throne of rats
Sword of disease
...

And from Operation Mindcrime, Spreading The Disease (almost too easy, i know):

Sixteen and on the run from home
Found a job in Times Square
Working Live S&M shows
Twenty-five bucks [a fuck]
And John's a happy man
She wipes the filth away
And it's back on the streets again

Spreading the disease
Everybody needs
But no one wants to see

I like this use of the word - as a verb, like in Anathema's Memento Mori:
Quote:
My life's minds plagued by lyssophobia
In a cage solitude locks me in
As the dark blackened walls close in on me
Dementia strikes, there's no turning back

Drowning in the stygian sea
As those voices repeat to me my malediction
Memento Mori
Remember you must die

Kampfar has a song called Swarm Norvegicus, which seems to be about the Black Death of 1349. I love the lyrics, because they are apocalyptic and hellish while also somehow triumphant and glorious at the same time.
Quote:
Rats! Rats spreading
Rats! King spreads children to the flute ov death
Rats! Crawling diseases
Rats! Plague spreading, rats feeding
Rats! The stench, blood tearing
Rats! Crawling children, devils feeding
Rats! Rats spreading
Rats! The feast of kings spread the stench

While the silvermoon rises
you can hear they crawl from the depths of hell
Onwards to victory
The black banners rise in glory
Children dance
While the feast whipes out the whores of the earth
Shades and banners
Waving in devilish triumph

"Plague and Fyre" by Hell is about the outbreak of bubonic plague that ravaged England from 1665 to 1666.

Quote:
Roses blister on his skin
Fill him full of lies, withered posies crumbling in his hand
Destroy the lucky amulet, and damn us with the flies, read the last rites
"Blessed be the people" is a mockery, from clergy which approves the kiss of death
Ring-a-ring the children sing, the black plague bells are heralding
The funeral pyre, for beggar, priest and king

No, no, no - nobility's no sanctuary
Flee, flee, flee - the rat's bubonic flea
But the scourge is everywhere, England weeps in her despair
And in misty eyes a cure cannot be seen

Raging pox and pestilence are dripping with blood
The slavery black dog roams everywhere
Smite the one he bites, and drags the ones he misses down, the worst is yet to come
As 1665 turns into 1666, a dread lead to none before grips every man
As the prince of darkness sets aloose his wicked bag of tricks
Will the evil lord unleash His masterplan?

"This plague and the impending conflagrations are signs from God
And thus we, the flagellants, shall inflict punishment
Upon our bodily flesh and other earthly manifestations
To atone for the sins of the world"

Satan has sent out a plot as cruel as it was grand,
To raze away the English capital
As the final time began, he brought the flames to make his stand
And thirteen times the baker shook his hand
In the hellish heat of his retreat, the devil did a spy
The souls of London town were ripe for taking
From the depth of his disguise, through the black slits of his eyes
The fallen angel watched the city die

Fire, fire, fire - is burning London town
Try, try, try - to beat flames down
But the heat is too intense, and its thirst cannot be quenched
And London's burning to the ground

Ring-a-ring o'roses, a pocket full o'posies,
A-tishoo! A-tishoo! - we all fall down

Kreator have a few that come to mind. "The Ancient Plague" does a great job at painting an apocalyptic scene, particularly with that speech and solo at the end. Then they've got the title track from Terrible Certainty as well.

Spoiler: show
Die! Slowly you're dying
From this contagious disease
Once you're infected there's no hope of a cure
Your passing is a sure thing
Your thoughts are empty and hopeless
Nothing is left for you now
Having to live with this terrible certainty
Praying is all you can do

It's vicious and crippling and slowly your life will end
But how long will it take to save us from the plague
With fatal convulsions the plague is reaching for us
God knows! What will it take to save us from the plague

Contracted by blood
The virus can be in us all
You're one of it's victims, but then thousands more
And they won't be the last
So many civilisations before
The mighty, the proud and the brave
The poor, the rich - Indiscriminate
Soon they'll all end in the grave

Ramesses. I love how dark and heavy that album is. Lyrics are of course ominous and apocalyptic.

we stand before you and the gods and old ones
towering in shimmering light
echoes of mans predecessors
amongst deep unpennetrable forest and pillars of black stone
burning forever eyes of the night the ram with a thousand young draws near
into dwindling sight atop the low mountains the storm breaks and floods and blinds the eye
the seven standing stones cast their shadows of inevitability
and the plague beak wearer stalks the shadows of mankind
obsidian omnipotent immortal drawn in the shadows of our past

Killing Joke are borderline but this one is great so whatever.

The only thrash metal song that truly matters covers the topic.

E! limination by Overkill

Quote:
terminal, what disease
told me too late
what's this cough and wheeze
fatal, you're shittin' me
a second opinion
is what I need
laughin' in a windstorm
blowin' all the cornstalks down
cryin' in a funeral home
forward my mail, six feet underground

elimination
elimination
elimination
elimination

contagious, say why not
not just me
waitin' to rot
painful, yeah I know
it couldn't be easy
when I had to go
i'm yankin' on my plug
and I can't seem to get it loose
pullin' all the stops
your ideals change. when you got
nothing to lose.

That Killing Joke song is particularly badass. Love it. I barely know of this band... I mean, heard the name for sometime now but never investigated before

Morbid Angel - "Lord of All Fevers and Plague" was the first that came to mind.

"Rejoice in the heaving earth
Praise the ripping sky
Rise spread disease
Consume their puny souls"

Not directly related to the topic, but the line "Ride the wings of death" in that song may be one of the most memorable lines of the band's discography.

Excellent call, I guess Morbid Angel have quite a few references within many songs don't they? Didn't realize just how many until I looked up the lyrics, etc. for what you mentioned and saw others too. I'm really only familiar with 'Altars', 'Covenant' & 'FFTTF'

Metallica's Creeping Death comes to mind first

Quote:
Now
Let my people go, Land Of Goshen
Go
I will be with thee, bush of fire
Blood
Running red and strong, down the Nile
Plague
Darkness three days long, hail to fire

More on topic is E.M.T.E.K. by Flotsam and Jetsam, a song about a human guinea pig selling his body for experiments

Quote:
Experiment for the government, I hear they're paying well
I needed the money, all I have is my courage to sell
Innoculations for the benefit of all mankind
A human guinea pig, I've laid my life on the line
I didn't plan on this misery, this drastic change
Organ donor before my death, what a foolish risk
Had suspicions when they hooked the needle to my wrist
Felt the sickness as the fluid gushed beneath my flesh
My peeling skin turns green, at least I can pay the rent

Masochistic nausea I can't chase away
Transforming my life is fading away
Blood cells mutating in unnatural ways
Hair is receding, my skin turns to scales
Genetic imbalance of self-induced hell

Distort the tissue to create the strain
Biological warfare is their f*&$#*g game
I've paid the price the naive accessory
Cash mutated, I am no longer me

From the labs out to the streets the virus strays
Transforming my life is fading away
Blood cells mutating in unnatural ways
Hair is receding, my skin turns to scales
Genetic imbalance from self-induced hell
No immunization, no antidote to sell
Genetic imbalance from self-induced hell

after cramming out tons of rock albums in various styles, king gizzard and the lizard wizard finally made a thrash metal one last year, which contains this little number relevant to the thread

I'd recommend their second self titled album, the one with the clown. Some of the most intense stuff the band has done.

It's also a very fitting album for this thread even if it isn't related to plagues or diseases: the main topics are paranoia, globalization, apocalyptic scenarios and politics. Jaz Coleman sounds really pissed every single minute of it.

Bolt Thrower - Plague bearer

Based on traitor marines turning to Chaos. Hail Nurgle!

Contamination - spreads throughout the world
Contagious evil - now that chaos takes its hold

Sadistic torture - warps your earthly form
Your blood now curdles - now to be reborn

You scream in pain - yet no-one hears a sound
Plead for redemption - now by chaos you are bound
By chaos you are bound

Infectious disease
Feel your body rot
Your final lament
Will soon be forgot

Slow painful death
Dementing your brain
The tribulation
Driving you insane

Demonoid - 14th Century Plague:

"Millions on the run
Fear in their eyes
Black Death pine for their lives,
Loves them to death
Nowhere left to escape
Embraced in the arms of the plague
Yersina Pestis penetrates all

Coughing up your lungs
Abscess suppurates
Your fluids clot inside your limbs
Finally the end
corpses all around
40 millions left to rot away

14th century plague
cure against mankind
14th century plague
deadly gift from the gods"

Good apocalyptic stuff. Especially love that "cure against mankind" line.

I got bored this weekend and made a virus-themed playlist. Here's some choice cuts:

Cattle Decapitation - "Bring Back the Plague"

"The recurring pandemic
Not often enough it seems
For these mammalian hosts
A systematic invasion is a must...

Bring back the plague
Delete those that threaten a new world
Start today
Dig their graves"

Aborted - "The Origin of Disease"

"Man is the origin of disease
We are uncreation spiritual devastation
This virulent strain, by man created
A prolific game of shock and awe, meticulously orchestrated
And we are left to weep"

Psycroptic - "Carriers of the Plague"

"One and the same
A fact that shattered the illustrious grandeur
You so forcefully shared
Carriers of the plague

This living contradiction sparked
An organic deterioration never witnessed

Originating from within
You carried the plague to your flock
Bodies in rejection
Slowly ridding the filth"

Anthrax - Among the Living:

Disease, disease
Spreading the disease
With some help from Captain Tripps
Bring your world down to his knees.

Power, yes, power
Show them all his power
It pulses through his ice cold blood
A whole world to devour

Demolition Hammer's Crippling Velocity is the grimmest description of the Black Plague ever, I reckon.

Pandemic rages on, galloping consumption
Hundreds then thousands of victims perishing
Tolling bell chronicles
Perpetual stream of death
Terminal pestilence
[...]
Putrefying stench of decaying bodies
Purple and black, boundless atrocity
Afflicted children perish in abandonment
Immeasurable calamity

(Oh, and 'Infectious Hospital Waste', too. I think that one speaks for itself.)

An easy one!

Epidemic by Slayer

Quote:
Breeding fast in poverty
Infectious driving dormant seed
Inside your carcass start to mate
Left in charge to dominate
Waiting to unfold
Raging uncontrolled
Adapt a potency
Death machine, infest my corpse to be

Unyielding kings of agony
Test your body chemistry
Pulmonary overthrow
Possession of your inner throne
Invasions quickly override, malicious domineering strike
Flood your veins commit slow death
Deteriorate your makers met

Perpetual demise
On a fast decline
Killing tendency
Epidemic, permanent disease

Incapacitate, fall into your fate
Pain results in screams, bleed internally
Years will pass before it can be cured

two from the Gods of thrash. Human Strain never did a hell of a lot for me but it's passable, and World Painted Blood (the song) is kind of a Slayer classic now imo

That's funny, you thought of Slayer at the same time I did (I got the message "There's been a new post since you began yours" or whatever it says) we just thought of different songs

This is my «plague and pestilence» playlist

† Judas Priest – Pestilence and Plague (The best one, imo)
† Hell – Plague and Fyre
† Nuclear Assault – The Plague
† Hellhammer – Triumph of Death
† Slayer – Epidemic
† Grave Digger – Black Death
† Slow Death – Dark Days (actually, the whole album)
† Cattle Decapitation – Bring Black the Plague (everyone's 1st choice, so it seems
† 1349 – I am Abomination ("1349" being the year the Black Death arrived to Norway)
† Evoken - Atra Mors

(My bonus track would be Diamanda Gala's «The Law of the Plague»)

Demon - The Plague

Could see it as more about the outcome going forward than about the disease itself though.

It's fair game though, imo, because they use the word & the concept of a plague.

Trad doom band Warpriest just released a song that'd fit the bill:

Killing Joke are borderline but this one is great so whatever.

That Killing Joke song is particularly badass. Love it. I barely know of this band... I mean, heard the name for sometime now but never investigated before

Damn the Killing Joke stuff is excellent. (also long been a fan of Ramesses)

I know- new discovery for me. I'll have to check out Ramesses.
