If I chose Sweden can I throw Abba in the mix?

definitely Norway. Their sense of melody is more interesting to me and less obvious than most of the Swedish bands. The only Swedish band that would compare to my favorite Norse bands would be the early Alf the Gates stuff. And not only were the Norse BM bands more innovative than their Swedish counterparts (save for one important obvious example ha), they also innovated with the 'avantgarde' metal stuff.

Sweden.

Reason One - Opeth
Reason Two - Draconian
Reason Three - Yngwie Malmsteen

I've lurked through the thread and wanted to reply for a while, but I actually wanted to give it some real though before actually answering. I was expecting Norway to come out on top for me, and I confirmed it was the case, and than it's a toss up between Finland and Sweden.

If anyone is interested, this is a list of all the bands I considered from my top 500 most played bands on last.fm:
Spoiler: show
Norway
Ulver
Blood Red Throne
Leprous
Darkthrone
Arcturus
Immortal
Enslaved
Kvelertak
Borknagar
Emperor
Carpathian Forest
Taake
Mayhem
Ihsahn
Burzum
Solefald
Vulture Industries
Satyricon
Gorgoroth

Finland
Kalmah
Demilich
Children of Bodom
Edguy
Reverend Bizarre
Finntroll
Oranssi Pazuzu

Sweden
Bathory
Katatonia
Candlemass
Scar Symmetry
Dismember
At the Gates
Soilwork
Darkane
Bloodbath
In Flames
Dark Tranquility
Entombed
Amon Amarth
Dark Funeral

However, these are the bands that actually mattered in my final decision:
Norway
Ulver
Blood Red Throne
Leprous
Darkthrone
Arcturus
Immortal
Enslaved
Kvelertak
Borknagar
Emperor
Carpathian Forest

Finland
Kalmah
Demilich
Children of Bodom

Sweden
Bathory
Katatonia
Candlemass
Scar Symmetry
Soilwork
At the Gates
Dismember

Norway wins by a long shot for the sheer amount of quality bands of so many genres they produced and keep producing. Ulver and Blood Red Throne are both in my top 10 most played bands of all time. And close behind Leprous and Darkthrone are such amazing, consistent and fantastic bands. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. If it's not enough, than just throw in the countless other amazing 2nd wave black metal bands they produced and the avant-garde and black/folk bands that Garm (from Ulver, Borknagar and Arcturus) helped shape.

As for Sweden, I love so much of their music, and it pains me to have to chose between some of the best 2nd wave black metal and Bathory. I also deeply love Katatonia, and I've been getting more and more into Candlemass over the last few years, and Scar Symmetry was also a key band in my musical journey as a teenager/young adult, and even though I don't listen to their music quite as much as I used to, I still revisit some of their best material from time to time. I'm not really into swedish death metal and Opeth, which are often very important to the people picking Sweden of Norway. I do think that Sweden has a more important metal scene than Finland.

I listen to more music that originates from Sweden, but Demilich and Kalmah are two bands of my all time favorite bands. Demilich's masterful and odd death metal is truly amazing, and Kalmah is still, to this day, my favorite melodic death metal bands. If that's not enough, throw in CoB for good measure and their amazing first four records.

Conclusion - Norway wins easily for me, thanks to amazing acts that standout, like Ulver, Leprous and Blood Red Throne. Add this to the amazing amazing amazing black metal scene they have, and it's just a no brainer for me. I respect other people's choices, but I pick Norway.

^Isn't there a typo of sorts in your original list of most-played Finnish bands?

This thread is now a poll so you can now vote for your chosen country.
