Evergrey - Escape of the Phoenix

I guess that that title might get some jokes, but anyway, the new single 'Forever Outsider' is outstanding (powerful, and faster EG which I want them to be like, thank you)! Was my immediate preorder yesterday, the rather limited audiobook edition. Although nothing beats 'The Atlantic's cover artwork...

Surprised no one has mentioned Dordeduh yet. These guys really are class of their own.

They have a new album ready to be released some time next year

In terms of other new releases, it looks like At the Gates are well underway recording their newest. A 2021 release probably isn't out of the question. I wouldn't say I'm highly anticipating a new one from them given that At War and To Drink were both pretty mediocre, but I'll be curious to check it out nonetheless.

I'm really curious about a new Neurosis album because apparently when they were getting together for their 30th anniversary shows a few years ago and revisiting some of that old material, it inspired them to write a full new album's worth of music (I think it was Scott who said "We 'accidentally' wrote a new album...") that was NOT Fires Within Fires, since that was already about to be released. Fires was good, though hasn't had me urging to come back to it like most of the others, and I'm curious to see if revisiting older material has them wanting to get a bit more aggressive again (or at least get Dave doing some vocals again, dammit! We need that caveman roar back!

Are you sure about that? I remember that exact quote but it was about how they accidentally composed Fires Within Fires in just a week, but then it took them a few months to record it even though it was already fully composed. I may be wrong though, I can't find that interview. I was at two of the 30th anniversary shows and they were great btw.

Got it.

Quote:
It all just kind of happened. There was no grand plan. Our 30th anniversary was technically in the middle of December 2015. Earlier in the year, we had had the thought to do some 30th anniversary concerts and to do a rare glimpse backwards for the fans. Normally we’re so self centred and driven on this forward evolution that we don’t really care what anyone else thinks. We care and acknowledge and have gratitude that people like our weird self centred music but it is not what drives us. But we did want to celebrate our 30th anniversary by going back in the catalogue, trying to find some songs that would work, and trying to acknowledge each phase of our band.

We originally planned those shows to be in December, but we got together… We live quite far apart and don’t rehearse often. We realised we had a weekend in February in 2015 when we’d all be free. We decided to not book any shows and just get together and see what would happen. By the end of the weekend, it was really only two nights because we all had to get back to work on Monday, we were all packing up and Scott and I realised we had an entire album’s worth of material. It wasn’t polished but we had the skeleton of Fires Within Fires. We immediately postponed our anniversary concerts until March and decided to spend our actual anniversary in the studio doing what we love to do most which is to make records.

Ahhhhhh okay, my mistake! I thought they mentioned another album on top of what they already had for Fires. Either way I'd still be curious to see if revisiting those old songs triggered a different flame in them.

My brother saw the 30th anniversary shows at Roadburn and apparently they were amazing. I never saw them but saw the tour they did after with Converge; checking the setlists beforehand and they were playing Takeahnase at EVERY show...except the one I saw x( Don't get me wrong, Water Is Not Enough is a great song as well but damn it, I'd seen that already! Gah.... oh well, they opened with Lost at least!

This is the first year I can ever remember having nothing concrete to look forward to next year. Nothing set in stone yet.

Cannibal Corpse were in the studio many months ago now. Interestingly this will also be the first time they ever went over 3 calendar years between albums even though the last was November 2017.

Misery Index were reported to he writing in 2020

Suffocation recently posted studio footage

Jungle Rot are in the studio

Cryptopsy posted studio pictures

Sadly, that's all I know of right now. As far as bands I hope for due to long periods of silence

Leviathan will reach 6 years since Scar Sighted this year.

Dying Fetus will hit 4 years after a 5 year wait between albums.

Neurosis will be at 5 years since Fires Within Fires.

I realize Nails has been having trouble but they are about to be at 5 years without a new album

Immolation are at 4 years of no album

We're apparently getting a new album from The Crown in 2021. They're also contributing a single to Decibel's Flexi Series (that won't be on the album).

Pretty much all the bands you mentioned are touring powerhouses. I can guarantee a bunch of those are fully done with their albums, but now that there is a glimmer of hope for shows to return in 2021 they're probably sitting on announcing them for a few months. If the US government gets its shit together and all goes well with the vaccine rollout, summer/fall are going to be absolutely bonkers for releases and shows.

Let's see:

-Cannibal: Probably delayed a bit - my guess is that it's going to be announced shortly after the new Rivers of Nihil is announced so Metal Blade can have two huge spring releases. Late March to mid-April is my guess for the timeframe.
-Misery Index: Maybe by the end of 2021, but they work slowly these days and an early 2022 release isn't inconceivable.
-Suffocation: End of 2021 at the earliest, more likely 2022. They don't exactly work fast and that footage you probably saw was prepro in Hobbs' basement.
-Jungle Rot: Definitely, probably late spring.
-Cryptopsy: Don't hold your breath. They can't get out of their own way for anything and expecting a new Cryptopsy release of any sort before 2022 is naive at best.
-Leviathan: Who knows. Wrest does what he wants to do when he wants to do it.
-Dying Fetus: Probably by the second half of the year, maybe. They had like six songs by mid-2019, so they probably have a full album's worth of material, but it's a matter of getting into the studio.
-Neurosis: Maybe? They do what they want when they want to do it because they can afford to take their time. 2021 isn't a bad guess either way.
-Nails: If Todd wants to get it out, he'll get it out. Wouldn't be surprised to see it released in 2021.
-Immolation: Very likely was intended for 2020, but with Ross in Canada, Alex in DC, and Steve in Ohio, getting everyone in a room to rehearse and then record was probably not doable for most of 2020. I'll be extremely surprised if they don't release anything in 2021.

Misery Index have an EU tour with Primitive Man, Ulthar and Gloom starting in September 2021 so I'd expect they'd have a new album out by then. While life may get in the way (I believe Jason lives in Finland, so the COVID situation may affect their ability to get together), they've been making pretty clear signals that we should expect a new album next year.

I think Todd is still trying to find a new lineup for Nails since everyone else quit, right? Unless they recorded music before the departures happened I wouldn't expect a new album before Fall of 2021 at the earliest.

Todd can just get a session lineup (like he usually does live) and I'm pretty sure Phil Sgrosso is a free agent again, so he could probably enfold Poison Headache into Nails and have that make up the new lineup.

Phil is still in As I Lay Dying, it was their other guitarist Nick Hipa who quit. Maybe he still has some time to do Nails, but I kind of doubt he'd be able to be a full time member. I guess Todd could go with a session lineup if he really wanted to get an album out, though.

Oh, yeah, you're right, but either way, Phil is making enough off AILD to not need a day job and Nails never tours for more than a couple weeks, so I could see Phil being able to do it.

Someone already mentioned it but The Body's new album is most likely gonna be a powerhouse. Their 2018 album was so emotionally gripping that I'm certain this follow up will be top 10 material for sure. Nails' 'Now I Take' would be awesome to see coming out in 2021, but the pessimist in me doesn't see it happening. Spasm and Gutalax are also recording new material so hopefully goregrind in 2021 will be even better than it was this year. New Cannibal Corpse is always a treat, but their last album was a bit disappointing, especially following 'A Skeletal Domain'. GWAR has also been clanking around without any new material the same as CC, with more or less the same amount of studio progress/info, but it'd be a nice surprise. Not to speak ill of the last two albums, but it would be interesting to see a new Blothar and Gwar album that wasn't a tribute/send off album for deceased members.

A new GWAR won't realistically come out until they know they can tour on it - they really don't sell that much and they are a live band first and foremost.

Sorry to disappoint you dude, but AFAIK "Aria Galactica" will never be released. The album has been done since 2006 but won't be released due to complications with their record label.

Lugubrum are recording Bruyne Kroon, its a local band for me that I have always liked for their weird humor and experiments.

Then we have a postponed albums category, and in there I am really looking forward to Sculptured - The Liminal Phase, its pretty much finished, so it is safe to say that we will hear it in 2021

then Smohalla - Entitates, I absolutely loved the single they released 2 years ago... but no news since then as far as I know

I'm looking forward to the Lugubrum release too. Plage Chomage was great and the one they've been recording at the moment is supposed to be a return to their older sound...

It's probably borderline metal, but I quite liked the single from the new band White void of Lazare from Solefald/Borknagar, although I do wish he and Cornelius will record a new Solefald album soon.

Well they're recording with Andy LaRocque and having Jens Bogren do the mix/master this time around, so the production issues with To Drink From The Night Itself shouldn't be present on the new one, hopefully. It's tentatively scheduled for a May 2021 release, so we should start hearing some new songs around February/March.

I don't know how many fans they have here, but Depressed Mode have reunited and are working on a new album with a 2021 release in mind. The new album apparently won't feature Natalie Koskinen's vocals though, mainly due to scheduling conflicts. From the post on their Facebook page, which also seems to hint at a new Shape of Despair album:

Quote:
Depressed Mode is currently working on a new album
After a decade of hiatus, on september 2020 Deathdoom group Depressed Mode started working on their 3rd studio album in Ansa studio, Ulvila. Line up for the album is Teemu Heinola (guitars), Henri Hakala (bass), Iiro Aittokoski (drums) and vocals by founder Otto Salonen.
To differ from previous albums, guitarist Tomppa Turpeinen and Female vocalist Natalie Koskinen will not participate on the upcoming album.
”After consideration, we decided that we want to work on our new material with a line up that lives nearby each other so that we can take full advantage from our studio sessions and organize rehearsals, produce as a group etc.
We are still processing the new material and at this point I cannot even tell if there is going to be any female volcals on the new material.
Nata is currently working with her band Shape of despair and making the schedules work even without her are already a pain in the ass, so at this point we didn’t see any other options than to proceed with just the four of us”
”The new material sound like DM, but after a break this long with all of us working on other projects (music- and lifewise) the band sounds more mature. Also some of the songs have been simmering in my head for a decade so all the metawork has pretty much been done for a while. It almost seems as the whole recording process is just the cherry on top of the whole production!”
Release date has not been set yet and the band is currently in touch with labels and publishers to make sure the album will be available to our listeners worldwide.
Stay low, Stay safe.

Sigh just confirmed on their facebook page that there will be a new album coming out in 2021. Maybe it's time for me to dive right back in to what these guys are doing because I haven't given them much attention since Scenes From Hell.

Great news!

Their last 3 albums are all excellent.

Hell yeah, Heir to Despair was fantastic, these guys are on a roll. I'm assuming the name will start with an "S"?

Yes, I think the time has come for them to start a new acrostic.

I don't know how many fans they have here, but Depressed Mode have reunited and are working on a new album with a 2021 release in mind. The new album apparently won't feature Natalie Koskinen's vocals though, mainly due to scheduling conflicts. From the post on their Facebook page, which also seems to hint at a new Shape of Despair album...

To differ from previous albums, guitarist Tomppa Turpeinen and Female vocalist Natalie Koskinen will not participate on the upcoming album...We are still processing the new material and at this point I cannot even tell if there is going to be any female volcals on the new material.

I'm a fan of them, and a bit surprised interstellar_medium hasn't managed to mention them yet. New SoD would be good as well. I don't like the embedded part of the press release though. Maybe it'll turn out ok, or they'll find someone else suitable, but her vocals definitely added some flair to their offerings, especially given that a common complaint about SoD has been that they underutilize her. DM arguably does as well, but at least it's additional material.

For those of you into Darkestrah, they're set to release a new EP next year titled Chong-Aryk with a new lineup. They've already released the opening track:

To the list of returns that no one saw coming, Darkwoods My Betrothed are working on a new release for 2021. Tuomas Holopainen and Kai Hahto are both involved, and supposedly the new material is going to be a mix of raw black metal and the more epic stuff DMB are known for.

Here's the Google Translate version of the original Finnish article about the reunion and album, for those interested:

I just saw a new post from Wiegedood today on Facebook/IG, teasing a new release for August 27. They've been in the studio working on new music for the past few months, so I'm super hyped to hear a new record from them.
